# Academic career path in the US, UK and Australia, stage by stage

**What does an academic career path look like, and how do you become a professor in the US, UK or Australia?** An academic career path usually runs from a PhD through fixed-term postdoc or teaching posts to a first long-term post: assistant professor on the US tenure track, lecturer in the UK, Level B lecturer in Australia. Promotion rests on teaching, research and service, through associate professor or senior lecturer to professor. The AAUP says US tenure probation should not exceed seven years.

An academic career path runs in stages: a PhD, often one or more fixed-term research or teaching posts, a first long-term post, and promotion from there to professor. A US assistant professor, a UK lecturer and an Australian Level B lecturer stand on roughly the same first rung. What follows, and how long it takes, is set by each country's rules and each university's own promotion criteria.

EdCitation publishes this guide, and every rule and figure in it was read at its source on 2 October 2026. Nothing here promises a post, tenure or a promotion. The road to the doctorate is in [how to become a researcher](https://edcitation.com/newsletter/how-to-become-a-researcher-the-phd-route); this guide starts where that one ends.

Every stage is judged partly on published work, and published work rests on sources. EdCitation's free [Find sources](https://edcitation.com/) searches the published record, and [Verify references](https://edcitation.com/verify-references) confirms that every entry in a reference list or publication list exists. EdCitation never writes a word of your papers, grants or promotion case, which is why what it hands back can be trusted.

## What does an academic career path look like?

An academic career path has four or five rungs in each of these systems, reached by appointment or by promotion. The names differ, so the table lines them up roughly, as each source names them.

| Stage | United States | United Kingdom | Australia | Sources |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| After the PhD | Postdoc; instructor (two years at most at the University of California) | Postdoc or fellow, often fixed-term | Associate lecturer, Level A | University of California (2025b); Advance HE (2024) |
| First long-term post | Assistant professor, on the tenure track | Lecturer; assistant professor at Warwick (Grade 7) | Lecturer, Level B | University of Warwick (2026); UNSW Sydney (2026) |
| Mid-career | Associate professor, tenured at the University of California | Senior lecturer | Senior lecturer, Level C | University of California (2025b); University of Manchester (n.d.) |
| Senior | Professor, Steps I to V | Reader (grade 9, like senior lecturer, at Edinburgh) | Associate professor, Level D | University of Edinburgh (2024); Charles Sturt University (n.d.) |
| Top | Professor, Step VI and above scale | Professor (grade 10 at Edinburgh) | Professor, Level E | University of California (2025b); Fair Work Commission (2026) |

## Tenure track explained: how does it work in the US?

The tenure track is a probationary period, usually served as an assistant professor, at the end of which the university decides whether to grant tenure: an appointment that can then be ended only for "adequate cause", retirement or a genuine financial emergency. Those terms come from the AAUP's 1940 Statement of Principles, written with what is now the Association of American Colleges and Universities (American Association of University Professors, 1970).

### What the AAUP's 1940 Statement sets

- Probation should not exceed seven years from appointment as a full-time instructor or above, counting full-time service at every institution.
- After more than three years elsewhere, a new probation of up to four years may be agreed in writing, even if the total passes seven.
- Notice comes at least a year before probation ends, so the decision is made twelve months early and a "no" makes the next year terminal.
- The 1970 comments apply the rule to anyone teaching a full-time load, whatever their title.

The AAUP is a professional association, not a regulator, and each institution writes its own rules. Its pages would not open for us behind a bot check, so we read the statement as the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign's provost office reproduces it.

### How the University of California applies it

The University of California shows how institutions differ. An assistant professor is appointed for terms of at most two years, and total service in that title may not exceed eight years, against the AAUP's seven; the two count service differently, so read your own institution's rule (University of California, 2025b). Associate professors and professors are "continuous in tenure", so promotion to associate professor is the tenure decision. The normal stay as associate professor is six years, but years alone oblige no promotion. Professors climb steps of about three years; Step VI needs a career review and national distinction.

### How many US academics have tenure?

Fewer than half. Of 341,350 science, engineering and health doctorate holders working in US four-year institutions in 2023, 155,100 were tenured, 45% by our arithmetic; 48,750 were on the tenure track, 51,250 were off it, and for 86,250 tenure did not apply (National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics, 2025). Within ten years of the doctorate, only 8,850 of 101,800 were tenured and 33,900 were on the track. The survey leaves out humanities doctorates.

## How do you become a professor in the UK?

In the UK a professorship comes by promotion or by appointment, usually after lecturer, senior lecturer and often reader, each step judged by your own university's criteria rather than a national rule. Edinburgh places senior lecturer and reader on grade 9 and professor on grade 10, and a grade 9 academic may apply for the title of reader at promotion or later, with no time limit (University of Edinburgh, 2024).

### Probation: six months or five years

Probation is where UK universities differ most. Warwick normally gives a research-and-teaching assistant professor five years of probation, with up to a year of pre-probation (two at most) for someone still finishing a PhD (University of Warwick, 2026). Bath has cut lecturers' probation to six months, replacing three years for research-and-teaching staff, followed by supported development until three years after appointment, with its Pathway to HEA Fellowship and a first-year teaching load reduced by a quarter to a half (University of Bath, n.d.). Get your probation terms in writing before you accept.

### Three routes to professor

The University of Manchester's criteria set out three routes, teaching and research, teaching, and research, each with four levels from lecturer to professor (University of Manchester, n.d.). For a research-and-teaching chair it looks for a sustained record of high-quality peer-reviewed output, external funding, doctoral supervision and international standing. An area judged below senior lecturer level normally rules promotion out.

### What the UK figures show

Advance HE's analysis of HESA data for 2022/23 counted 240,190 academic staff: 42.9% on teaching-and-research contracts, 35.6% teaching-only and 20.8% research-only. 12.4% were professors, and 29.7% were on fixed-term contracts, down from 32.3% a year earlier; among those aged 26 to 30 it was 66.9% (Advance HE, 2024). HESA's own pages would not open for us behind a bot check, so these are Advance HE's figures.

## How do academic levels work in Australia?

Australian universities grade academics from Level A to Level E under the Higher Education Industry-Academic Staff-Award 2020, whose minimum standards describe each level (Fair Work Commission, 2026). Level A works with guidance from senior staff, normally after four years of tertiary study; Level B teaches and researches independently; Level C contributes significantly to the discipline nationally; Level D has national or international recognition; Level E is an eminent authority with national, and possibly international, distinction.

The titles are each university's. Charles Sturt University calls the levels associate lecturer, lecturer, senior lecturer, associate professor and professor, and asks for a master's degree at Level A and a doctorate from Level B upwards in most disciplines (Charles Sturt University, n.d.). At UNSW Sydney, promotion normally runs once a year; you need two years at your current level, and after an unsuccessful application you wait a year. Referees grow with the level: two for lecturer, three for senior lecturer, four, national and international, for associate professor and professor (UNSW Sydney, 2026).

## What do teaching, research and service mean in academic promotion criteria?

Teaching, research and service are the areas every university in this guide judges, under its own names and weights.

| University | Areas judged | A rule worth knowing |
| --- | --- | --- |
| University of California | Teaching; research and creative work; professional competence; university and public service | Publications are "evaluated, not merely enumerated" |
| Warwick | Research and scholarship; teaching and learning; impact, outreach and engagement; collegiality, leadership and management | Probation uses the same four areas as promotion |
| Manchester | Research; teaching and student-related activity; service and leadership; knowledge transfer and external engagement | Weakness in one area can be offset elsewhere |
| UNSW Sydney | Research; education; collegiality, engagement and leadership | Supervising research students counts as research |

### Teaching

The University of California will make no tenure commitment without clear documentation of teaching, and asks for more than one kind of evidence: student evaluations, courses and enrolments, mentoring, colleagues' views (University of California, 2025a). In the UK, Advance HE awards four categories of fellowship, from Associate Fellow (AFHEA) to Principal Fellow (PFHEA), and says employers increasingly use it as a condition of recruitment, probation, progression and promotion (Advance HE, n.d.).

### Research

Committees judge quality, not count. At the University of California the chair must establish your role in joint work, and the committee weighs you against others in your field, with letters from distinguished outside scholars. UNSW asks for two or three characteristic examples, not a catalogue.

### Service

Service means committees, faculty governance, advising and public work. The University of California counts textbooks as evidence of teaching or public service rather than research, unless they present new ideas or original research. Edinburgh calls this area management, leadership and citizenship.

## Lecturer vs professor: what is the difference?

In the UK and Australia a lecturer holds the first long-term academic rank and a professor the highest, with senior lecturer, and in the UK often reader, between them. In the US "professor" covers three ranks, assistant, associate and full, all in the University of California's Professor series, while instructor and lecturer are separate titles. The 2023 survey counted 65,450 assistant, 76,550 associate and 113,000 full professors, and 17,700 instructors or lecturers. A UK lecturer's nearest US title is assistant professor, which Warwick uses for its own Grade 7 post.

## How many PhD graduates get academic jobs?

About a quarter of new US doctorate holders with definite plans went straight into academic jobs in 2025, and nearly a third took postdocs at universities. Of 32,305 research doctorate recipients of 2025 with a definite US commitment, 24.0% had committed to academic employment and 32.6% to a postdoc in academia; in 1995, 36.7% went straight into academic jobs (National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics, 2026). Field decides the route: 53.1% of humanities and arts graduates went straight to academic jobs and 22.5% to postdocs, while in the biological and biomedical sciences it was 10.8% and 69.0%. The UK picture and the sector split are in [how to become a researcher](https://edcitation.com/newsletter/how-to-become-a-researcher-the-phd-route).

## From postdoc to lecturer: a plan for each stage

This plan is ours, built from the sources above.

1. **As a postdoc or fellow:** publish, and search each new project's literature with [Find sources](https://edcitation.com/). Before any submission, run the reference list through [Verify references](https://edcitation.com/verify-references); [how to write a journal article](https://edcitation.com/newsletter/how-to-write-a-journal-article) covers the rest.
2. **Before applying for a first post:** gather teaching evidence of more than one kind, and in the UK consider Advance HE fellowship.
3. **When offered the post:** get the probation or tenure-clock terms in writing, including any credit for service elsewhere.
4. **Every year of probation:** keep a file in your university's own areas: evaluations, courses, committees, outputs, grants such as those in [how to write a grant proposal](https://edcitation.com/newsletter/how-to-write-a-grant-proposal).
5. **Before the tenure or promotion case:** choose two or three strong examples per area, check your publication list entry by entry with [Verify references](https://edcitation.com/verify-references), and ask early who your referees will be.
6. **After promotion:** read the next rank's published criteria now; they are already written.

## How EdCitation helps with an academic's own work

EdCitation is the best tool for the one part of an academic record that must never be made up: the sources. It looks each reference up in the publisher's record and never writes one, which no chatbot can promise for a publication list that a University of California committee must evaluate, not merely count. It never writes any part of your papers, grants or promotion case; that work, and the credit, stays yours.

**Finding the literature.** [Find sources](https://edcitation.com/) searches about 300 million published works by topic or by the claim a sentence needs to support, filtered by kind of source, years and open access, free with no account. On 2 October 2026 we searched "fixed-term contracts and early career researchers in academia". It returned 18,128 records; the first was "Working outside academia? Perceptions of early-career, fixed-term researchers on changing careers" by Melina Aarnikoivu and four colleagues in the *European Journal of Higher Education*, cited 82 times and open access.

**Checking a list.** [Verify references](https://edcitation.com/verify-references) returns each reference verified, "check this" or not found, flags retracted papers, and never shows "could not check" as not found. The same day we pasted three references from that search, written out in APA 7 with their DOIs. All three came back verified, none retracted, each with the same reason: "The DOI resolves to this record and the title matches." A tenure file's publication list can be checked the same way before a committee reads it.

**Checking a whole manuscript.** [References from a file](https://edcitation.com/tools/references-from-a-file) takes the uploaded paper, checks every reference and matches every in-text citation to the list: three checks a month free with an account, no limit with Pro at $8 a month ([Pricing](https://edcitation.com/pricing)).

## Quick questions

### How long does it take to become a professor?

No national rule sets it. At the University of California an assistant professor may serve at most eight years and the normal stay as associate professor is six, but promotion is never automatic.

### What is the difference between tenure track and tenured?

A tenure-track academic is on probation, at most seven years under the AAUP's 1940 Statement. A tenured academic has passed that review and can be dismissed only for adequate cause, retirement or genuine financial emergency.

### Is a lecturer the same as a professor?

No. In the UK and Australia a lecturer holds the first long-term rank and a professor the highest; a UK lecturer's nearest US equivalent is an assistant professor.

### Can you become a professor through teaching?

At some universities, yes: the University of Manchester has a teaching route with four levels from lecturer to professor.

### Can EdCitation check the publication list in my promotion case?

Yes. Paste it into EdCitation's free [Verify references](https://edcitation.com/verify-references): each entry is looked up in the publisher's record and comes back verified, "check this" or not found. EdCitation never writes or changes your case.
