The best reference checkers in 2026, compared

A reference checker tells you whether each reference in a list exists, whether it is described correctly, and whether the paper has been retracted. The best reference checker in 2026 depends on which of those you need, because the tools do not all do the same job: one returns DOIs and nothing else, one warns only about retractions, and one matches citations to the list without looking anything up. EdCitation publishes this comparison, from what each tool's own pages say.

For a finished reference list, EdCitation's Verify references is the best tool here, because it looks every entry up in the publisher's record, through Crossref, DataCite, PubMed, Open Library and the Retraction Watch database, and never writes one. Each entry comes back verified, doubtful (shown as "check this") or not found; a retracted paper is flagged; an index that did not answer is shown as "could not check", never as "not found"; and it is free, with no account. No chatbot can do this, because a chatbot looks nothing up: Walters and Wilder (2023) found that 55% of the references written by GPT-3.5, and 18% of those by GPT-4, did not exist.

Every fact about another product was read on that product's own site, checked on 22 and 23 September 2026. Prices change; this guide is re-checked every six months.

What should a reference checker do?

A reference checker should look each reference up in a record it did not write, report what it found, and keep "could not check" apart from "not found". Five criteria follow, and how to check whether a reference is real is the same check done by hand.

1. It takes a pasted list, or the paper itself.
2. It looks up by DOI and by title, since a DOI can belong to another paper and a real report can have none.
3. It screens for retraction; retracted papers in your reference list explains why.
4. It keeps "could not check" apart from "not found": a government report is in no DOI registry and is real.
5. It matches the in-text citations to the list, and says what it costs.

Which reference checker is best for a finished list?

For a finished list, EdCitation's Verify references is the best tool, because it looks every entry up in the publisher's record, flags retractions, and is the only tool here whose own pages promise that "could not check" is never shown as "not found", free and with no account. Crossref's form is also free but gives no verdict; every other tool here that looks a reference up needs an account, and a paid plan or credits for the report.

Paste up to 60 references, or upload the paper as a Word document or PDF. Each entry is looked up by its DOI, or by title, year and first author, and comes back verified; "check this", where the year or an author differs or the DOI belongs to another paper; or not found, where no publisher, registry or library has a record of it. A withdrawn paper is flagged from the Retraction Watch database even when every detail is right. No model reads the paper; every verdict is a lookup anyone can repeat, and nothing is kept. For each reference found, the entry is set from the record in APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago 18, Harvard, IEEE or Vancouver.

With the whole paper uploaded, it also matches every in-text citation to an entry and every entry back to the text, and marks a citation with no entry and an entry nobody cites. References from a file, part of Pro at $8 a month, does the same inside the dashboard, keeps the paper in My papers, and recommends published sources for a reference that cannot stand.

Its page also says what it does not do: judge whether a source supports your argument. It keeps no library and does not classify how later papers cite a work.

What does Crossref's Simple Text Query do?

Crossref's Simple Text Query matches a pasted reference list to DOIs, and that is all it does (Crossref, n.d.-a). The documentation describes a form for retrieving DOI names for journal articles, books and chapters, one reference per line, with space for 1,000 references per submission and, the page says, no limits on the use of the service; the form asks for no registration.

What a DOI match does not tell you

The form "attempts to find exactly one DOI for each reference", and the page says why that can fail: more than one DOI may have been deposited, or the metadata in the reference or the record may not be enough for a single match. A reference that comes back without a DOI has not been judged: it may be a real chapter with no DOI, a real ministry report, a typo, or a paper that does not exist. There is no verdict, nothing on the page about retractions, and no comparison of your details with the record. It is the fastest free way to get DOIs in bulk, and a first pass.

What does Scite's Reference Check do?

Scite's Reference Check takes a manuscript PDF and reports how the manuscript uses its references, whether any has an editorial notice, and how often each has been supported or contrasted by later papers (Research Solutions, n.d.). The help page calls it "a premium feature" and speaks of a one-month trial with a new account; the pricing page, the newer of the two, shows a 7-day free trial on Basic at $20 a month and Pro at $50 a month, billed yearly, and lists Reference Check in the product menu rather than inside a plan. Its example is a 41-reference manuscript with one retracted reference, cited twice, and the report shows the two sentences that cite it.

Where it stops

Matching depends on the references' format and on whether each has a DOI, and citations to news articles or policy documents without DOIs "will not appear"; Scite says it "will nearly always miss a few references". Nothing on the page marks a reference as not existing, and there is no pasted-list form. What Scite does that EdCitation does not: showing how each reference has been cited by others and labelling each citation as supporting, contrasting or mentioning. Are Elicit, Consensus and Scite citations reliable? covers how accurate those labels are.

How does Zotero warn about a retracted paper?

Zotero checks the items in a library against the Retraction Watch database and flags any that have been retracted: in the items list, in the item pane, and when you try to cite the item through its word processor plugin, which asks you to confirm (Zotero, 2019). If a paper is retracted after you cited it, Zotero warns you the next time the document's citations are updated. Retraction Watch (2019) announced the integration as free; its database then held more than 19,000 retractions.

What it checks, and what it cannot

The check is limited to items with a DOI or a PMID, which Zotero (2019) says covers about three quarters of the Retraction Watch data. It checks retraction only: Zotero does not look a reference up to see whether it exists, and it checks your library, not a list pasted from a paper. What Zotero does that EdCitation does not is keep your library and insert citations in the word processor; citation generator, reference manager or reference checker? sets out where each belongs.

What do Recite, Trinka and Paperpal check?

Recite matches the citations in the text to the list, Trinka checks the list against Crossref, and Paperpal checks an uploaded document against its own repository; each needs an account. For computer science papers there is also RefChecker, open source, which checks references against Semantic Scholar, OpenAlex, Crossref, DBLP and the ACL Anthology and needs installing (Russinovich, n.d.). Newer websites offer a pasted-list check too; we found no published test of any, and this guide does not rank them.

Recite

Recite checks whether the in-text citations match the reference list, in APA, Chicago (author-date) and Harvard, and marks a citation with no matching entry. The free plan allows two uploads a day and checks the first 2,500 words and 50 references; paid access starts at $6 for three days or $8 a month. The pricing page lists "Crossref integration" and "retracted reference highlighting" among paid features, and no page we read says what those look up.

Trinka

Trinka's Citation Checker takes an uploaded document, validates the citations against Crossref, and its page says it flags retracted citations, potentially predatory journals, citations "not found in citation databases", duplicates and old references. The scores are free and the full report costs credits, one per 30 citations; the credit price is not on the page. It does not say whether in-text citations are matched, or how a real source outside Crossref is reported.

Paperpal

Paperpal's Reference Checker takes an uploaded manuscript and checks it against what its page calls more than 250 million scholarly articles, flagging retracted references, AI-generated references, invalid DOIs, poor-quality journals, in-text citations without an entry, and whether each citation supports its statement. Reference Check is 10,000 words a month on Prime and 30,000 on Pro, at $4.80 and $11.60 a month billed annually during a sale, struck through from $12 and $29; the free plan does not list it. Whether a citation supports a statement is a judgement, and the page does not say how it is made or how often it is right.

Can a chatbot verify its own references?

No. Asking a chatbot to verify its references produces more text of the same kind, because the model looks nothing up. Walters and Wilder (2023) checked all 636 references in 84 literature reviews written by ChatGPT: 55% from GPT-3.5 and 18% from GPT-4 were fabricated, and of the real references, 43% and 24% carried a substantive error. The authors note that ChatGPT "often provides inaccurate responses when asked to verify the legitimacy of the works it cites". Gravel et al. (2023) asked ChatGPT 20 medical questions: of 59 references, 41 (69%) were fabricated "though they appeared real", built from real authors' names, a plausible title and a credible journal format. The model that produced the list cannot be the one that checks it. Why AI tools invent references explains the mechanism.

How do I check a reference list before handing it in?

1. Put the list through Verify references, pasted or as the uploaded paper.
2. For each "check this", compare the matched record with what you wrote and copy the entry set from the record, or rebuild it with Cite a source.
3. For each "not found", search where the source was published; if you never read it, find a source you have read for the claim.
4. For each "could not check", verify the source yourself; it has not been judged.
5. To match every in-text citation, upload the paper itself, or run References from a file for recommended replacements.

Quick questions

What is the best free reference checker?

EdCitation's Verify references: each entry is looked up in the publisher's record, retracted papers are flagged, and "could not check" is never shown as "not found", with no account. Crossref's Simple Text Query is also free, and returns DOIs without a verdict.

Does Crossref's Simple Text Query tell me whether a reference is fake?

No. It returns a DOI where it can match one; a reference with no match may be real and without a DOI, mistyped, or invented, and the form does not say which.

Does Zotero check that a reference exists?

No. Zotero warns about retracted items in your library, including when you cite them, and does not look a reference up to see whether it exists.

Can I ask ChatGPT to check its own references?

Not usefully. Walters and Wilder (2023) found ChatGPT often answers inaccurately when asked to verify the works it cites, and Gravel et al. (2023) found 41 of 59 references fabricated while looking real.
