What is verified
| Every reference, against the record | Each entry is looked up by its DOI, or by title, year and first author. It comes back verified, doubtful (shown as “check this”: the year or an author differs, the DOI belongs to another paper, or the title is recorded in another journal), or not found. |

| Citations against the list | With the whole paper: every in-text citation is matched to an entry and every entry back to the text. A citation with no entry, an entry nobody cites and a year that differs are each marked where they sit. |
| The entry, set from the record | For each reference found, the entry as the record has it, in APA, MLA, Chicago, Harvard, IEEE or Vancouver, ready to copy with italics. |

Why you can rely on it
| No model | Nothing here is a judgement. Every verdict is a lookup anyone can repeat: the DOI registry, Crossref, PubMed, Open Library and the Retraction Watch database. |
