How to cite sources in a PowerPoint or consulting deck

To cite sources in a PowerPoint or a consulting deck, credit each borrowed fact twice: briefly on the slide where it appears, and in full at the end. Consulting decks give the short credit as a source line, one small line under a chart beginning "Source:", with numbered footnotes for definitions and caveats. Academic decks use APA or Harvard author-date citations and a references slide.

This guide is published by EdCitation, which looks references up in the publisher's record and never writes any part of a deck. On 2 October 2026 we read the Harvard Business School library's citation guide, APA Style's pages, five university library guides and the UK government's chart guidance. We ran EdCitation's free Cite a source on a statistics page, a company annual report, a consulting report and a journal article, then Verify references on the list, and quote what came back.

Annual reports, 10-Ks and Statista in written work are in citing sources in a business report; how much a slide should carry is in how to design slides that help.

How do I cite sources in a PowerPoint?

Put a short citation on the slide, beside the fact, chart or image it supports, and the full reference on a final slide, in the speaker notes or in a handout. Neither APA nor the Harvard guides we read sets a slide layout.

APA 7 on a slide

APA Style says its guidance on crediting sources applies to presentations, while font size and the amount of text are the writer's choice (American Psychological Association, 2020c). Two of its rules matter most in a deck:

• Images. In a presentation a figure's number and title are optional, but the note carrying a copyright attribution is required whenever the image's licence asks for credit. Clip art supplied with PowerPoint needs none (American Psychological Association, 2020a).
• Other people's slides. If a borrowed deck cites a study, find and cite the study. Slides on a company intranet are cited with the site's name and address only when your audience can open them; otherwise they are a personal communication.

Brock University Library (2026), writing for business students analysing an industry, asks for a citation on the slide for quotations, paraphrases and facts such as market share. It recommends a references handout, keeping a references slide for short lists, at about 24 points and 12 lines a slide.

Harvard on a slide

The University of Hull's Harvard guide (University of Hull Library, 2026) is the most specific we found. A borrowed figure or table on a slide need not have a caption, only a citation on or near it, with the full references in the slide notes or on a slide near the end. Cite Them Right is sold by subscription, so we could not read its own advice on slides.

Hull allows the notes area; Brock prefers a handout. Our view: when a deck will be read without you, put the list on a final slide.

What is a source line on a consulting slide?

A source line is the small line under a chart, exhibit or table that begins with the word Source and says where the graphic or its data came from. Baker Library at Harvard Business School sets out the convention in its HBS Citation Guide for 2026–27 (Baker Library, 2026), which is based on The Chicago Manual of Style, not Harvard referencing. One example reads "Source: Compiled from Bloomberg LP, LexisNexis, and SEC filings data, May 2015."

The guide says a paper with complete footnotes and source lines needs no bibliography unless the professor asks for one. APA and Harvard always want the full list.

Four wordings, by how the chart was made

• Copied from one source: "Source:" then author, title, publisher and date.
• Compiled from several: "Source: Compiled from" the sources.
• Compiled, with your own sums: the same, ending "and author's calculations".
• Your design, others' data: "Source: Author, based on data from" the sources.

Its example for a whole table reproduced from a book adds a permission line. In a team's deck, "team analysis" does the work of "author's calculations"; that wording is ours.

Databases and footnotes

For subscription data, HBS names the owner of the information, the service that supplied it and the month of access: "Source: [Description of information], via Statista, accessed [month/year]." IBISWorld, Mintel, Passport and PitchBook follow similar patterns.

HBS numbers its footnotes; on a slide they carry the definitions, sample sizes and caveats a chart needs. The UK government's Analysis Function (2022) takes another line for published charts: the source links to the data itself, not a home page, and footnotes are short, sit in the text rather than the image, and use no superscript numbers. That guidance is written for web pages; in a deck, follow your firm's or course's template.

How do I cite data, company reports and statistics on a chart?

First decide whether you copied the chart, redrew it from published figures or calculated something new.

• Copied or adapted. APA puts a copyright attribution in the note under the figure, opening "From" or "Adapted from", then title, author, year, address and a licence or "In the public domain", as its sample map of Census Bureau data does (American Psychological Association, 2021).
• Redrawn from published figures. Bond University Library (2026) opens the note "Data are from" the publication, with its licence, such as CC BY 4.0.
• Calculated. Reanalysed data needs only an in-text citation, Bond says. HBS adds "author's calculations" so readers know which numbers are yours.

APA cites a statistic from the publication it appeared in, not the data set, unless you analysed the data yourself, and dates a data set by the version used (American Psychological Association, 2020b). Statistics bodies follow the convention: under its chart of AI use by firm size, Eurostat (2026) prints "Source: Eurostat (isoc_eb_ai)", the code of its data set.

A company report makes the company the author. Microsoft's 2025 annual report opens with a letter saying Azure passed $75 billion in revenue for the first time, up 34% (Microsoft Corporation, 2025). HBS's footnote for an online annual report gives the company, report, page, address and month accessed.

When the deck leaves the room

HBS warns that work distributed beyond the classroom may need the copyright holder's permission for graphical items, whole documents, or excerpts of text or data above 10% of the original. A deck sent to a client is in that position. Client data is a source too: Robert Gordon University Library (2026) cites an internal company document as unpublished, and anonymises a confidential one, as in [Placement agency], when you have been told to hide the name.

How do I cite sources in a pitch deck?

A pitch deck needs a source for every market figure, in a lighter form. The University of Toronto Libraries (2026) tell founders to name and link a source that is open online, and to give the publisher and year for a number from proprietary market research, as in "Source: Forrester 2016". Toronto adds that anything submitted for an assignment must meet academic integrity rules, so a class pitch takes full citations.

On the market-size slide, a figure from a research firm is that firm's estimate; one you built from a customer count and a price is your calculation, and "based on data from" says so.

A worked example: a consulting slide footer (ours)

This slide is ours; its figures are real, read at source on 2 October 2026.

Large EU firms are more than three times as likely as small ones to use AI

[Bar chart] Enterprises using AI, EU, 2025: small 17% | medium 30% | large 55%¹
[Callout] Organisations scaling AI agents: large 40%, smaller 22%²
[Callout] An AI assistant raised issues resolved per hour by 15% on average³

1. Enterprises with 10 or more employees; small 10–49, medium 50–249, large 250 or more.
2. Share of respondents; large = annual revenue above $1 billion; 1,719 participants,
   4 May to 8 June 2026.
3. 5,172 customer-support agents.
Source: Eurostat, Use of artificial intelligence in enterprises (Statistics Explained,
data extracted December 2025); McKinsey & Company, The state of AI in 2026 (August 2026);
Brynjolfsson, Li and Raymond, Quarterly Journal of Economics (2025); team analysis.

In an APA deck the footer becomes a note ending "Data are from Eurostat (2026), Tinkoff et al. (2026) and Brynjolfsson et al. (2025)", with full entries on the references slide.

The 15% is the journal article's figure; the 2023 working paper reported 14% (Brynjolfsson et al., 2023), so a slide built from the older version but footnoted to the journal shows a number the journal does not print. And McKinsey reuses one address for each edition of its survey: an archived copy from December 2025 shows the 2025 edition there (Singla et al., 2025). Give the edition's title and date.

How we built it:

1. Read each figure at its source, noting the population and dates for the footnotes.
2. Wrote the source line: the sources, then our own calculation.
3. Built the full entries with EdCitation's Cite a source from the DOI and web addresses.
4. Typed McKinsey's entry by hand; the tool could not read the page.
5. Checked the list with Verify references.

How do I cite each element of a slide?

Our summary, from the guides above:

Which EdCitation tool builds the references slide?

EdCitation's Cite a source is the best tool for a deck's references slide, because it fetches each source's record and never composes an entry, something no chatbot does. It works from a DOI, a title, a PubMed ID, an ISBN or a web address, in APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago 18 author-date, Harvard, IEEE and Vancouver, screens for retraction, and is free with no account. It builds full entries, not source lines, and writes no headline or recommendation: every word of the deck stays yours. Our runs:

• A journal article. From the DOI 10.1093/qje/qjae044 it read Crossref, found no retraction, and gave our APA entry as it stands, with "AI" kept in capitals.
• A statistics page. From Eurostat's news release it read the author, the date and the title, and the APA entry needed no change. It filed the page as news, as Eurostat does, so its Harvard version puts the title in quotation marks.
• A company report. Microsoft's report page gave no author or date: "Microsoft 2025 annual report. (n.d.)." With Microsoft Corporation entered as an organisation and 2025 as the year, it gave our entry.
• A data set. The DOI 10.2908/isoc_eb_ai returned "Eurostat. (2022)", the record's date; the figures we charted are 2025's, so use the version's year.
• A consulting report. For McKinsey's page it answered, twice: "That page could not be read. Some sites block automated readers."

Checking the references slide

Verify references, also free, took our five APA entries, with the journal article wrongly dated 2023:

1. Brynjolfsson et al.: check this. "The DOI and title are right, but the work was published in 2025, not 2023."
2. Eurostat news release: verified. "The page is at this address, and its title matches."
3. Eurostat article: check this, "the page there has a different title". Its heading is our title, so the entry stands.
4. Microsoft Corporation: verified.
5. McKinsey: could not check. "The site at this address turns automated readers away".

Nothing came back as not found. With a free account EdCitation keeps the list: each reference can be tagged and set in its own style, and the list downloads as a Word document, BibTeX or RIS for a handout. For the written report that goes with a deck, References from a file, in Pro at $8 a month, matches every in-text citation to the list.

Quick questions

How do I cite a source on a PowerPoint slide?

Put a short citation, such as (Eurostat, 2026), beside the fact or under the chart, and the full reference on a final slide, in the notes or in a handout. EdCitation's Cite a source builds the full entry free.

What is a source line in a consulting deck?

One small line under a chart or table, beginning "Source:", naming where the graphic or its data came from. Harvard Business School's citation guide words it by how the chart was made.

Do I need a references slide if every chart has a source line?

In APA or Harvard, yes. Harvard Business School's Chicago-based guide drops the bibliography when footnotes and source lines are complete, unless the professor asks for one.

How do I cite Statista on a slide?

Harvard Business School's form is "Source: [description of information], via Statista, accessed [month/year]". In APA, cite the organisation Statista names.

Can EdCitation make my slides?

No. EdCitation never writes any part of a deck. It finds sources, builds their references from the publisher's record and checks the list.
