Engineering textbooks and handbooks, in one place

Engineering textbooks outlive the courses that set them. MIT's Mechanics & Materials I, archived on OpenCourseWare, required the sixth edition of Hibbeler's Mechanics of Materials, dated 2004 (Livermore et al., 2006). Pearson now sells the eleventh, in a US edition copyrighted 2023 and an SI edition copyrighted 2024, and says about 30% of the SI edition's problems are new (Pearson, n.d.-b).

EdCitation publishes this guide, built from the University of Edinburgh's 2026/27 course descriptors and two MIT OpenCourseWare courses, read on 23 September 2026. It shows how to choose an edition, find it by ISBN, and cite a textbook, a handbook chapter and a standard with Cite a source, then gathers the books in EdCitation's Library.

What is on an engineering reading list?

An engineering reading list names one core textbook for each subject, a handbook where the subject has one, and, in design courses, the standards a design must meet. Some courses list nothing at all.

Edinburgh's course descriptors, 2026/27

In the first year, Engineering Mathematics 1a requires Glyn James's Engineering Mathematics in a special edition with its own ISBN, 9781800063556, sold only through one Edinburgh bookshop or electronically (University of Edinburgh, 2026c). Electronics and Electrical Engineering 1 names Rizzoni and Kearns's Principles and Applications of Electrical Engineering (University of Edinburgh, 2026b); Mechanical Engineering 1 gives its list as "None" (University of Edinburgh, 2026h).

In the second year, Engineering Thermodynamics (Mechanical) names Borgnakke and Sonntag's Fundamentals of Thermodynamics and Çengel and Boles's Thermodynamics: An Engineering Approach (University of Edinburgh, 2026d). Fluid Mechanics sets one book for each branch of engineering, the mechanical one Douglas and colleagues' Fluid Mechanics, sixth edition (University of Edinburgh, 2026f), and Materials lists Michael Ashby's books beside two chapters of the ICE Manual of Construction Materials (University of Edinburgh, 2026g).

MIT OpenCourseWare

Mechanics & Materials I, from Fall 2006, set Hibbeler chapter by chapter (Livermore et al., 2006). Elements of Mechanical Design, from Spring 2009, required Shigley, Mischke and Budynas's Mechanical Engineering Design and recommended Machinery's Handbook, 28th edition (Culpepper, 2009). The editions are old; the kinds of book still hold.

Which kinds of book does an engineering degree read?

An engineering degree reads six kinds of subject textbook, plus handbooks and standards, which are not books at all.

Standards are cited as standards

A standard is a numbered document from a standards body, with its own reference form. IEEE puts the title first, then the number, the corporate author, the place and the date (IEEE, 2025); APA treats it like a report, with the body that set it as author and the number in brackets after the title (American Psychological Association, 2020c). Edinburgh's fourth-year Concrete Structures lists three Eurocodes, only one with a year (University of Edinburgh, 2026a).

Which edition of an engineering textbook should I use?

Use the edition, and the units, your course names, and move to a newer one only when the course lead agrees. Between editions, the problems change, the standards a book follows change, and some digital textbooks now change without a new edition number.

Problems, units and standards

Homework set by problem number works only in the edition it was set from, and units split editions too: Edinburgh's third-year Thermofluids asks for White's Fluid Mechanics "preferably in SI units" (University of Edinburgh, 2026j). Design books follow the standards: Wiley brought every chapter of the seventh Steel Designers' Manual into line with Eurocode 3 (Wiley, n.d.), and Machinery's Handbook has been revised roughly every four years since 1924 (Industrial Press, n.d.). The standards are moving again: BSI will withdraw the UK's first-generation Eurocodes on 30 March 2028, and until then they are the ones that apply to UK building and civil engineering works (British Standards Institution, n.d.). A list naming BS EN 1990 without a year means the first generation for now.

When any edition, or no edition, will do

Some lists say so. Edinburgh's Fluid Mechanics suggests library and second-hand copies, "earlier editions usually fine", and Thermofluids says the editions of Fundamentals of Heat and Mass Transfer differ so little that any can be used. McGraw Hill sells Shigley's book on an Evergreen model, updated "without requiring a new edition" (McGraw Hill, n.d.): note the release year you read, because the reference carries it.

How do I find the edition a reading list names by ISBN?

Search by the ISBN the list gives, since an ISBN belongs to one edition in one format, and check the result against the list's edition, units and year.

1. Copy the ISBN from the list; Edinburgh's and MIT's pages print many.
2. Search it in EdCitation's Library, which takes an ISBN as well as a title or author, or paste it into Cite a source.
3. Expect one edition to carry several ISBNs: Pearson gives Hibbeler's eleventh SI edition three, one for each length of eTextbook access (Pearson, n.d.-b).
4. Check the units. SI and US editions are separate books with separate ISBNs.
5. When nothing is found, go by the title page. For Edinburgh's special edition, Cite a source found no record of ISBN 9781800063556 and said so, and the Library found nothing: a book printed for one university may be in no public record, and neither tool invented one.
6. Note the edition or release you read. It is the one you cite.

How do I cite an engineering textbook, handbook chapter or standard?

Cite the book, chapter or standard you used, from its title page or first page, in your department's style: usually IEEE in engineering, which puts city and country before the publisher (IEEE, 2025). A textbook, from its ISBN

MIT's ISBN for Hibbeler's sixth edition, 9780131913455, returned:

The APA 7 entry stands: copyright year, sentence case, edition outside the italics, no place (American Psychological Association, 2020a). The IEEE entry needs title case, as in the guide's book examples, and the country: R. C. Hibbeler, Mechanics of Materials, 6th ed. Upper Saddle River, NJ, USA: Pearson/Prentice Hall, 2004. MIT's page gives East Rutherford; the title page decides.

A chapter in an edited handbook, from its DOI

An edited handbook's chapters have their own authors, and are cited under them. Chapter 1 of the SFPE Handbook, DOI 10.1007/978-1-4939-2565-0_1, returned:

The chapter's record names no editors, so EdCitation took the nine from the handbook's own record; neither record gives the edition. Springer's pages give the fifth edition, copyright 2016 though the eBook appeared on 7 October 2015 (Springer, n.d.). APA's chapter pattern adds the edition beside the pages, and sentence case (American Psychological Association, 2020b):

In IEEE, applying the guide's six-name limit, stated for authors, the editors become the first and "et al.", with the edition, the place and a comma before "doi:":

A standard, from its DOI or by hand

BSI registers DOIs for its standards. The DOI of BS EN 1990:2002+A1:2005, 10.3403/02612036, returned:

The record holds no date and no standard number, so Cite a source wrote "n.d." and left the number out rather than guess. BSI's page supplies both, dating it 27 July 2002 (British Standards Institution, n.d.). In APA, BSI is the author and, as publisher too, is not named twice:

A standard with no DOI is built by hand from the same form. The ISBN BSI prints for this one, 9780580713743, is not recorded as a book, and Cite a source said so.

Where can I find engineering textbooks in one place?

The best place to gather an engineering reading list is EdCitation's Library, because the list is scattered: tracing this guide's editions took two universities' pages and six publishers' sites. The Library answers with one catalogue, narrowed by discipline, kind of book, language and year, or searched by title, author, subject or ISBN.

What the searches found

The Library files its books under 31 disciplines, Engineering among them. On 23 September 2026, Engineering narrowed to textbooks gave 3,666 books, and to handbooks or manuals, 6,355. Hibbeler's Mechanics of Materials, newest first, gave 67 records, SI editions of 2023 at the top, many of them eText or homework packages with ISBNs of their own. Shigley's book gave 21, the eleventh edition in SI units among them, and Machinery's Handbook brought up the 32nd edition's 2024 sets.

A result card shows the cover, who wrote the book, who published it and when, and whether it can be read in the Library or must be bought. Papers, conference proceedings and the finished list

Papers make up the rest of the list.
