A full stop goes inside the closing quotation mark in American English, whether or not the source had one there: APA 7, MLA 9 and the Chicago Manual of Style all ask for it. British practice puts it inside only when it belongs to the words quoted. Question marks and exclamation marks follow that sense rule on both sides of the Atlantic, and when a citation follows a quotation, the full stop comes after the citation.
EdCitation publishes this guide. It draws on the pages of APA, MLA and Chicago, the Oxford, Guardian and GOV.UK style guides, Wikipedia's Manual of Style, a Boston printer's treatise of 1855 and Chicago's first Manual of Style of 1906, all read on 27 September 2026. Our site writes British English, so our own sentences put a full stop inside the marks only when it belongs there; each example follows the style it shows.
Which convention you owe depends on the style your brief names. EdCitation's free Check your paper reads the brief into a checklist that includes the citation style, and Cite a source builds each reference with that style's own quotation marks. Single or double marks, and spelling, are in British or American English in academic writing; the serial comma is in the Oxford comma debate, [sic] in quoting dialect and non-standard speech, and the space after a full stop in one space or two.
Period inside or outside quotes: which rule applies to you?
If your paper follows APA, MLA or Chicago, put full stops and commas inside the closing mark. If it follows a British house style, put them inside only when they belong to the quotation. The table covers each case below.
| Case | American | British | What APA 7, MLA 9 and Chicago 18 ask |
|---|---|---|---|
| A quoted word ends your sentence | Wilson wanted "neatness." | Wilson wanted ‘neatness’. | Inside |
| A comma follows a quoted word | "raw," "loud," and "late" | ‘raw’, ‘loud’ and ‘late’ | Inside |
| A whole quoted sentence ends yours | She said, "It is done." | She said, ‘It is done.’ | Inside |
| The quotation is itself a question | He asked, "Is it done?" | He asked, ‘Is it done?’ | Inside, because it belongs to the quotation |
| Your sentence is the question | Who called it "done"? | Who called it ‘done’? | Outside |
| A semicolon or colon follows | "done"; then | ‘done’; then | Outside, unless it was quoted |
| A citation follows the quotation | "neatness" (p. 156). | ‘neatness’ (p. 156). | Full stop after the citation |
| A block quotation | The quotation's own full stop, then (p. 156) | The same | No full stop after the citation |
| An article title in the reference list | MLA and Chicago: “Title.” | Harvard: ‘Title’, | APA uses no marks; Cite a source sets each style's marks |
What does American style ask in APA, MLA and Chicago?
American style puts every full stop and comma inside the closing mark, and the three styles most students use say so.
APA 7
APA tells writers to place full stops and commas inside closing quotation marks, single or double, and other marks inside only when they are part of the quoted material (American Psychological Association, 2022).
MLA 9
The MLA Handbook calls the rule a convention, and MLA's editors say when to follow it: in a paper for a class or for publication in the United States, full stops and commas go inside; in a British context, British rules apply (Modern Language Association, 2018).
Chicago 18
Chicago places commas and full stops before a closing quotation mark, and semicolons, colons, question marks, exclamation marks and dashes after it unless they belong to the quotation (Harper, 2020, summarising CMOS 6.9 and 6.10). Its Q&A gives the advantage: the comma or full stop stays beside the word it follows (The Chicago Manual of Style, n.d.-a). Exceptions are allowed: Harper (2020) breaks the rule where a reader must know exactly what to type, and one Q&A answer keeps a full stop outside a quoted label ending in a colon (The Chicago Manual of Style, n.d.-b).
British vs American punctuation with quotes: what is the difference?
British style asks whether the mark belongs to the words quoted: if it does, it goes inside; if it belongs to your sentence, it goes outside. British writers also tend to use single marks first, though not everywhere.
The University of Oxford
Oxford's style guide uses single marks and puts punctuation inside only if the quotation would have needed it in its original form (University of Oxford, 2026). In its example of a spoken sentence broken by "he said", the comma after the first words goes outside, because the original sentence had no comma there, while the final full stop goes inside. The guide adds that American English has different rules.
The Guardian and GOV.UK
The Guardian and Observer style guide uses double marks, and puts full points and commas inside for a complete quoted sentence and outside otherwise (The Guardian, 2015). GOV.UK's A to Z style guide sets single marks for unusual terms and titles and double marks for direct quotation, but we found no entry on where a full stop goes (Government Digital Service, n.d.). "British" describes where the full stop goes, not a promise of single marks.
Harvard at UK universities
Harvard has no single publisher. The University of Westminster's guide follows Cite Them Right, asks for single marks around quotations of up to three lines and shows the full stop after the citation (University of Westminster, n.d.). Harvard guides at other universities may differ, so yours decides.
The fiction exception
British fiction relaxes the rule: Harper (2020) shows a comma inside the closing mark where a narrator interrupts dialogue, although the spoken sentence had none. Essays seldom meet this case.
What is logical punctuation?
Logical punctuation is the British rule under another name: a mark goes inside the quotation marks only if it was in the original. Yagoda (2011), writing in Slate, says the name has been common since at least the 1960s and calls Wikipedia its biggest user.
Wikipedia's Manual of Style asks for logical quotation in every article, whichever variety of English it is written in, as part of reproducing quotations exactly (Wikipedia, 2026). It is stricter than British newspapers: a quoted fragment always takes its full stop outside, and a quoted sentence followed by the speaker's name swaps its full stop for a comma outside the marks, where many British news publishers allow one inside. Yagoda also names the Linguistic Society of America's journal Language, whose style sheet puts the closing mark before other punctuation unless that punctuation is part of the quotation.
In a class paper in APA, MLA or Chicago, logical punctuation departs from the style unless your instructor allows it.
Why do Americans put the period inside the quotes?
Because printers thought it looked neater, and American editors kept the habit after Oxford dropped it. The printed record says so directly; the popular story about fragile metal type has no source we could find.
What the printers wrote
John Wilson, a Boston printer, told writers in 1855 that "for the sake of neatness" all four "grammatical points" (the comma, semicolon, colon and full stop) should come before the closing quotation marks, because they were "not likely to give a false meaning to the words cited" (Wilson, 1855, p. 156). Wirth (2016), for many years MLA's head of editorial services, cites the same passage from the 1850 edition.
Harper (2020) finds commas and full stops inside the marks in nearly all English printing before 1905, in Britain as in America. Horace Hart's rules for Oxford's compositors then asked for punctuation "according to the sense", and his 1905 edition, as Harper quotes it, called the old custom "a bad practice".
Chicago went the other way. Its first Manual of Style, of 1906, puts the full stop inside the quotation marks and adds, in brackets, that this is "a rule without exception" (University of Chicago Press, 1906, rule 113). Harper reports that the 1906 manual also put semicolons inside, that the 1910 edition moved them out, and that the 1937 edition gave the reason for the full stop in three words: "for appearance' sake".
The metal type story, unconfirmed
A widely repeated explanation says small metal full stops and commas were easily damaged at the end of a line of type, so printers tucked them inside the quotation marks. The version usually quoted is from a Usenet newsgroup's FAQ file, reproduced by GrammarBook.com in a 2013 reply to a reader, which warned in the same breath that plausible stories are often untrue (GrammarBook.com, 2013). We found no printer's manual or press history that documents it, and the printers who did explain the rule, Wilson and Chicago, gave appearance as the reason. Treat it as unconfirmed.
Where do question marks and exclamation marks go?
Inside if they belong to the quotation, outside if they belong to your sentence, in American and British style alike. APA puts other marks inside only when they are part of the quoted material (American Psychological Association, 2022), and Chicago treats question marks and exclamation marks the same way (Harper, 2020).
- The quotation asks: The survey asked, "How often do you check a reference?"
- You ask: Did the reviewer really call the method "sound"?
- An exclamation follows the same test: inside if the speaker exclaimed, outside if you do.
A sentence takes one end mark. When a quoted question ends your statement, its question mark ends the sentence and no full stop is added. When your question quotes a question, keep only the one inside the marks; MLA adds that if a citation follows, the question mark moves after the citation (Modern Language Association, 2019).
Where does the full stop go after a quotation with a citation?
After the citation. The citation belongs to your sentence, so the sentence cannot end before it; in APA, the end punctuation follows the closing parenthesis (American Psychological Association, 2022). Here is Wilson's line quoted in four styles:
- APA 7: Printers placed the points inside because they were "not likely to give a false meaning to the words cited" (Wilson, 1855, p. 156).
- MLA 9: Printers placed the points inside because they were "not likely to give a false meaning to the words cited" (Wilson 156).
- Chicago author-date: Printers placed the points inside because they were "not likely to give a false meaning to the words cited" (Wilson 1855, 156).
- Harvard: Printers placed the points inside because they were ‘not likely to give a false meaning to the words cited’ (Wilson, 1855, p. 156).
Chicago's editors give the same order for Turabian papers (The Chicago Manual of Style, 2019). If the quoted words end in a question mark, APA's pages show no example; its two rules together keep the question mark inside and your full stop after the citation.
Block quotations
A block quotation reverses the order. It has no quotation marks, keeps its own final full stop, and the citation follows with nothing after it. APA sets quotations of 40 words or more as blocks indented 0.5 in. and says not to add a full stop after the closing parenthesis (American Psychological Association, 2022). MLA explains why: a block does not sit in the middle of your sentence, so the reader knows your thought ends at the citation (Modern Language Association, 2016). Turabian's rule for Chicago is the same (The Chicago Manual of Style, 2019). If your paper is full of blocks, too many quotations and paraphrase, quote or summarise show how to turn some into your own words.
How do I punctuate quotations in my paper, step by step?
- Find your style. Check your paper reads the brief into a checklist and names the citation style it asks for, with the sentence it came from.
- Choose the convention. APA, MLA or Chicago means American punctuation; a UK Harvard guide usually means British; a brief that says otherwise wins.
- Test each quotation. In British style, ask whether the full stop or comma was in the original. In American style, full stops and commas go inside every time.
- Put the full stop after any citation.
- Set long quotations as blocks, with the citation after their final full stop.
- Build the reference list with Cite a source, which gives each style's titles their own marks.
- Search the file for each closing quotation mark beside a full stop or comma, and check it against step 3.
- Run Mechanics QA before you hand in for formatting and citations; quotation punctuation stays on your own list.
How does EdCitation help with quotations and references?
EdCitation is the best tool for the part of a quotation that must be as exact as its words: the reference behind it. Cite a source looks each source up in the publisher's record and never writes one, screens it for retraction, and is free with no account. On 27 September 2026 we gave it the DOI 10.58680/la198326273, a 1983 Language Arts study of first graders learning punctuation. The record came from Crossref, not retracted, and the title came back in each style's own marks:
Cordeiro, Patricia, et al. “Apostrophes, Quotation Marks, and Periods: Learning Punctuation in the First Grade.” Language Arts, vol. 60, no. 3, Mar. 1983, pp. 323–32, https://doi.org/10.58680/la198326273.
Cordeiro, P., Giacobbe, M.E. and Cazden, C. (1983) ‘Apostrophes, Quotation Marks, and Periods: Learning Punctuation in the First Grade’, Language Arts, 60(3), pp. 323–332. Available at: https://doi.org/10.58680/la198326273.
The MLA entry, first, puts the full stop inside the title's marks; the Harvard entry puts the comma outside; APA uses no marks at all. A reference follows its style, whichever convention your own sentences use.
Mechanics QA, part of Pro at $8 a month, checks a whole paper rule by rule: font, spacing, margins, headings and the reference list against the APA 7 student paper; comments, tracked changes and placeholders left in the file; each citation matched to the list and each reference looked up; figures that disagree; and language slips a spell-checker lets through. A free account gets three checks a month. Where a full stop sits against a quotation mark is not among its listed checks, so the table above is yours for that. Check plagiarism, also Pro and run on credits, marks passages that match published text with the source of each, so a quotation that has lost its marks is found by you first.
Every sentence of your paper, and every full stop in it, is yours: EdCitation finds, cites and checks, and writes none of it.
Quick questions
Does the period go inside or outside quotes in APA?
Inside. APA 7 places full stops and commas inside closing quotation marks, single or double. When a parenthetical citation follows the quotation, the full stop moves to after the citation.
Does the comma go inside quotation marks?
In American style, always, including APA, MLA and Chicago. In British style, only when the comma was part of the quoted words.
Is a full stop outside the quotation marks wrong in an American paper?
In APA, MLA or Chicago it breaks the style's rule, unless your instructor accepts British punctuation. MLA itself says to follow British rules in a British context.
Can EdCitation check where my full stops go?
Not as a listed check. Mechanics QA checks formatting, what was left in the file, citations, numbers and language, and Cite a source sets the quotation marks in your references for each style.
