A dissertation topic is chosen once and lived with for months, so a week spent testing it is well spent. It has to hold your interest, fit the word count and the time, and rest on sources, data or people you can reach. This guide to how to choose a dissertation topic, published by EdCitation, sits under our dissertation guide and covers the step before the research question.
We read every rule below on 26 September 2026, on each university's own pages: Hull, Reading, Westminster, Dundee, the University of the West of Scotland and Warwick in the UK; Chicago, Michigan-Dearborn and North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the US; Murdoch in Australia; and the UK's qualifications framework. Where they differ, we say so. The worked example is ours.

How to choose a dissertation topic, step by step
In eight steps. If your department gives you a list of topics, the list supplies step 2.
- Read your handbook. The University of Dundee Library (2026) says that, depending on the degree, you may choose freely, pick from a list or be assigned a topic. Note the word length and deadline.
- Collect a few candidate ideas from modules, reading, papers' future research sections, placements and your supervisor's interests.
- Run a scoping search on each in Find sources, a free search of about 300 million published works.
- Sort by times cited to find each field's key papers, and read what one says is still to be done.
- Test each idea for feasibility: time, words, data, participants, ethics, skills, supervision.
- Narrow the strongest one limit at a time, searching again after each.
- Keep the papers that matter in a reference list built in Cite a source, tagged by candidate.
- Read the handbook's topic and proposal rules into Check your paper, then take the topic to your supervisor.
Where do dissertation topic ideas come from?
From five places, and the strongest topics often draw on two.
- Your modules. The University of Westminster Library (2023) suggests building on modules you have taken; Hull asks whether a lecture or visiting speaker left you with questions.
- Your reading. The University of Reading Library (2026) lists old essays, current journals, controversies in your subject and things you disagree with.
- Other papers' future research. Westminster points to the limitations and future research that articles discuss, as does the University of Michigan-Dearborn Library (2026).
- Placements and experience. The University of Hull Library (2026) asks what unique experience you can bring, naming placements, study abroad and personal biography.
- A supervisor's projects. Murdoch University (n.d.) describes two routes: proposing your own topic, most common in the humanities, business and law, or choosing from a supervisor's list, most common in science and engineering.
Using a paper's future research section
Read the section, then check whether anyone has done it since. Michigan-Dearborn suggests following the paper's later citations through citation indexes, which is forward citation searching. If nothing since takes your angle, you may have a research gap.
The University of Chicago Library (2026) warns that not every gap deserves filling. It asks whether the gap matters, fits current debates, could improve practice or policy, is sound in method and ethics, and is feasible with your time and resources; several answers of no mean finding another.
When supervisors set the direction
Warwick's economics MSc students get a spreadsheet of supervisors and their interests, and each supervisor takes a limited number, so students should approach a favourite early with a clear idea (University of Warwick Department of Economics, 2026).
What makes a dissertation topic feasible?
A topic is feasible when you can finish it within the word count and the time, with data or participants you can reach, approval you can get and skills you have or can learn. Westminster says to be realistic: primary data can bring travel, language skills and ethical questions.

Data and ethics
Warwick's handbook is the clearest example we found: some organisations release data only if the department stores it on secure servers and takes legal responsibility, which it cannot, so students must find another source, preferably a free one. A topic built on one dataset is only as feasible as your access to it.
Interviews or a new survey need ethical approval before any data is collected, which takes time out of a short project. Warwick adds that anonymous existing datasets and historical records usually need no ethical scrutiny, so a secondary data project is often quicker when the deadline is close.
How do I test a topic with a scoping search?
Search the topic as it stands and read the count: a huge count means narrow it, a tiny one means widen or rethink it. Dundee calls a scoping search a rough overview of how much has been published; Hull suggests spending a little time on each candidate before choosing. Beyond the count, read three things:
- The first page. Is it about your topic, or a neighbour that shares its words?
- The most-cited papers. They show what the field is built on, though citation counts favour older work.
- Existing reviews. A recent systematic review of exactly your question is a signal to take another angle.

How do I narrow a broad topic?
One limit at a time, searching again after each. The University of the West of Scotland Library (2026) suggests narrowing by people, settings, products, policies, time-frames or genre; Westminster by sector, country or case study, and widening an over-narrow topic by setting it in the wider literature. Each limit fixes part of the project's scope, so choose ones you can defend: a place you can reach, a group you can recruit, a period with data.
A worked example: from green space to a workable topic

The broad idea, then students
Green space and mental health opened with Beyer and colleagues' 2014 Wisconsin study of neighbourhood green space (904 citations) and Gascón and colleagues' 2015 review of residential green and blue space (1,182). Adults, where they live: a field, not yet a project.
Adding urban and students, sorted by times cited, gave 92,840, led by Lee and Maheswaran's 2010 review of urban green space and health (1,580 citations) and Kondo and colleagues' 2018 review (1,186). The first about young people came eighth: the sort surfaced the field's classics, and the word students did little.
Narrowing to the campus, with filters
Campus green space and student wellbeing, from 2020, gave 9,717, led by Malekinezhad and colleagues' 2020 study of a university campus in Frontiers in Public Health. Of the first eight, three name China or a Chinese city in their titles and one Tanzania; none names the UK. Filtered to review articles, 256 remained, headed by a 2024 systematic review of campus green space and students' mental health, but the first eight also held reviews on older people, engineering students and allergenic pollen. A filter is only as good as the index's labels: the scoping review we read next was labelled an article, so the review filter left it out.
One key paper's future research
Sorted by times cited, the 2020 search put a scoping review, Aghabozorgi et al. (2024), eighth; we read it in full. It included 54 studies, 19 of them found through the others' reference lists; 24 came from China and two from the UK, and over 96% reported a positive link between campus landscapes and mental health. The authors ask for research on campus blue space and landscape design, on low and lower-middle-income countries and on students from low socioeconomic and ethnic minority groups, and on whether students benefit from simply being in a landscape or must engage with it on purpose. They also note a shortage of observational studies of what students actually do there.
The workable topic
The UK search, from 2020, gave 2,205. Its first result was off-topic, a 2020 analysis of anatomy teaching during the pandemic with 508 citations; the scoping review came third, and a study of international Chinese students' use of green space in the UK eighth.
Our topic: whether students at one UK university who visit campus green space on purpose during exams report less stress than those who only pass through it, by survey. It takes up the review's question about intentional use, in a country with two of its 54 studies, with participants a student can reach. New survey data means ethical approval first, and it needs a questionnaire and basic statistics. An observational version, recording how the spaces are used, would answer the review's other call; ask your supervisor what approval it needs. How original does a dissertation topic need to be?
That depends on the level, and UK and US sources draw the line in different places.

The UK framework is the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education's (2024). For a bachelor's dissertation, Hull says the topic need not be "completely unique", though something a little different leads to more interesting conclusions; the UNC Writing Center (n.d.) sets a higher bar for US honours theses. At master's level the UK framework asks for original application, Michigan-Dearborn for a novel contribution; your department's marking criteria decide. A doctorate needs a contribution to knowledge, so its topic must leave room for one.
Can I change my dissertation topic?
Usually, if you do it early and your supervisor agrees. Warwick's economics handbook requires any change of title or topic to be agreed with the supervisor. Reading says a first question is not set in stone, Murdoch expects early ideas to be challenged and questions modified, and UNC counts the flexibility to redirect research when a plan fails among what an honours thesis teaches.
A change costs more once other things depend on the topic: an assessed proposal, an ethics application, a data agreement. Warwick's proposal is worth 10% of the dissertation module and due on 28 June 2027. A recent review that answers your question, data that falls through or an approval too slow for the time left are good reasons to change; raise them early.

The publisher's record files "van der" with the second author's first name; Cite a source moves it to the family name, as the paper prints Alexander van der Jagt. Read every entry against the paper. A free account keeps these entries in reference lists, each reference tagged, so every candidate topic's papers sit under their own tag; organising references with tags shows how.
Check your paper reads a handbook's rules into a checklist, free, each beside the sentence it came from. Given the proposal section of Warwick's handbook, it returned the word count, 1,000, beside the sentence making that the maximum, and listed what it does not check, including the required literature review and research plan and the deadline. Paste only the rules for the document in hand: given the whole section, it took the proposal's 1,000 words as the word count. Quick questions
How do I choose a dissertation topic if I have no ideas?
Start from what you have met: modules you enjoyed, lectures that left questions, and papers' future research sections. Hull also suggests experience such as a placement or study abroad.
How do I know if my dissertation topic is too broad?
Run a scoping search. If the count runs to hundreds of thousands and the first results span several fields, as our 369,390 for green space and mental health did, narrow it by group, place, period or outcome.
Can I change my dissertation topic after the proposal?
Usually, with your supervisor's agreement, which Warwick's economics MSc requires for any change of title or topic. It costs more once an ethics application or data agreement depends on the topic.
Does an undergraduate dissertation topic have to be original?
Not in the doctoral sense: the UK framework for bachelor's degrees does not ask for originality, and Hull says the topic need not be completely unique. UNC expects a US honours thesis to rest on original research.
