How to revise for exams comes down to four jobs: find out what each paper asks, build a revision timetable you can keep, spend most of it answering questions from memory, and protect your sleep. The university and exam-board guides we read in September 2026 agree on the first three; the sleep research backs the fourth.
EdCitation publishes this guide. Its Check your paper reads the instructions for an exam or assignment into a checklist, free and with no account; we ran it on an exam brief of our own below. The timetable template is ours, built from the guides and studies cited here; no study tested it as a whole, and no plan guarantees a grade.
Why self-testing and spacing work is in how to study effectively; this guide is the plan.
How do you revise for exams, step by step?
You revise for exams by working backwards from the exam: what it asks, then how many hours you have, then what goes in each one.
- List every exam: date, time, length, room, and whether it is closed book, open book or "seen" (questions given in advance), which the University of York (2026) treats as different preparations.
- Find out what each paper asks from past papers and the specification, and paste the instructions into EdCitation's Check your paper.
- Make a topic list and weight it by what the paper examines and how sure you are of each topic.
- Build the timetable backwards from the exam dates, with buffer slots and a rest day.
- Spend most sessions answering from memory: past-paper questions, self-tests, a blank page.
- Keep your sleep steady for weeks, not just on the last night.
- Use the day before for review and logistics, and arrive early on the day.
How do you find out what an exam will ask?
You find out what an exam will ask from past papers, the specification or module outline, and the exam's own instructions, before planning anything.
Past papers and specifications
Past papers show the format: how many questions, how much choice, how the marks are split. The University of Leeds Library (n.d.-b) adds a warning: courses change, so ask whether this year's format and content match. For GCSE and A level, AQA (n.d.-a) keeps most past papers, mark schemes and reports on the exam on its website for three years; read the reports alongside the papers.
A specification (the exam board's list of what can be examined) or a module outline is the full topic list; past papers only sample it. Birmingham City University (2025), writing for A level, BTEC and T Level students, suggests searching the course name, exam board and "specification". At university, the module handbook does the same job.
Reading the exam instructions into a checklist
EdCitation's Check your paper shows each rule with the sentence of the brief it came from. We ran it once in September 2026 on this brief, written by us for an invented module:
Module PSY1002 Cognitive Psychology: summer examination. The exam lasts 2 hours and is closed book. Answer two questions from Section A (short answers, 20 marks each) and one essay question from Section B (60 marks). Essay answers should refer to at least three published studies, cited by author and year in APA 7 style. No notes, phones or smart watches may be taken into the exam room.
It returned two rules, each with its source sentence: "Sources (published)", at least 3 sources, and "Citation style", APA 7. Under "What it asks you to do, which no rule can test" it set aside three sentences: "The exam lasts 2 hours and is closed book.", the choice of questions from Sections A and B, and "No notes, phones or smart watches may be taken into the exam room." Timing and room rules stay on your own list. For coursework, see how to read an assignment brief and rubric.
How do you make a revision timetable?
You make a revision timetable by counting the hours you really have, weighting the topics, and placing sessions backwards from each exam with spare slots. The Open University (n.d.) says to note exam dates, work, family and personal commitments, and the hours available, then share them out.
Count the time you have, then take some off
Plans run late. Buehler et al. (1994) asked 37 psychology honours thesis students at the University of Waterloo when they would finish. Their best estimates averaged 33.9 days; they took 55.5. Only 29.7% finished by their own best estimate, and 48.7% by the date they gave for everything going as badly as possible. A small study of thesis writers, not revision, but the lesson carries: leave empty slots, which the University of Reading (2026) calls "wiggle time".
Choose and weight the topics
Guides disagree here. Birmingham City University (2025) says to prioritise your weakest topics. Reading (2026) expects weak topics to need more time, but also says to pick topics basic to the subject and ones you understand, enough to leave a choice of questions. Leeds (n.d.-b) goes furthest: short of time, you may decide not to prioritise topics you are less sure of.
Our view: the paper decides. Where every question is compulsory, a weak topic costs marks and gets time. Where you choose three questions from eight, cover enough topics for a real choice plus one spare, and go deep.
How long should a revision session be?
No study we read settles session length, and the guides differ. Birmingham City University suggests short, focused sessions; AQA (n.d.-c) says several shorter sessions are easier to remember from than one long one; Reading suggests blocks of two to three hours with short breaks, changing module after each. Pick a length you can keep up, and switch subject between blocks.
Our revision timetable template
This weekly template is EdCitation's own. Three subjects, A to C; replace the fixed commitments with yours.
| Day | Session 1 | Session 2 | Session 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monday | A: weakest topic, learn then self-test | B: past-paper questions on one topic, marked | Fixed commitment |
| Tuesday | C: weakest topic, learn then self-test | A: blank-page recall of last week's topic | Buffer |
| Wednesday | B: new topic, learn then self-test | C: past-paper questions on one topic, marked | Fixed commitment |
| Thursday | A: past-paper questions, marked | B: blank-page recall of an older topic | Buffer |
| Friday | C: new topic, learn then self-test | A: mixed questions from several topics | Fixed commitment |
| Saturday | One timed past paper, rotating subject | Mark it; log every lost mark | Free |
| Sunday | Rest day | Rest day | Twenty minutes: plan next week from the log |
Shift the balance as the exams near: six or more weeks out, most sessions learn topics and answer questions untimed; in the last fortnight, most are timed papers and error-log topics. The Open University suggests keeping a day or so before each exam for review, not new material.
How should you use past papers for revision?
Use past papers to practise answering, not as reading. Reading's Study Advice team (2026) suggests practising reading the question, planning answers and writing timed answers by hand, allowing extra time at first and then speeding up. An Open University tutor, in the Help Centre's video (n.d.), says nothing beats them.
- By topic, untimed, notes closed, checked against the mark scheme.
- Mixed topics, so that you must decide what each question needs.
- Full papers, timed, by hand, in one sitting.
- Log every lost mark by topic and cause (did not know, misread, ran out of time); the log sets next week's timetable.
With no past papers, Reading suggests asking your tutor for practice questions.
Which revision techniques work best?
The revision techniques that work best make you answer from memory and return to topics over weeks; our guide to how to study effectively sets out the evidence. In revision that means past-paper questions, flashcards answered before you turn them, blank-page recall ("blurting", in Birmingham City University's word) and explaining a topic aloud, which AQA suggests. Retrieval practice and spaced repetition each get their own guide in this series. We read no study that tested Birmingham City University's "2,3,5,7" method.
How much sleep do you need before exams?
Sleep before exams matters over weeks, not only the last night. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine's consensus statements recommend 7 or more hours a night for adults (Watson et al., 2015) and 8 to 10 hours in 24 for teenagers aged 13 to 18 (Paruthi et al., 2016), on a regular basis.
What the studies of students found
Okano et al. (2019) measured the sleep of 88 students in an introductory chemistry class at MIT with wearable trackers. Longer, better and more consistent sleep went with better grades, and sleep accounted for nearly 25% of the variance in performance. Sleep on the single night before a test showed no relation to the score; sleep over the week and month before did. The study was correlational; proving cause would need randomised trials, the authors note.
Gillen-O'Neel et al. (2013) had 535 high-school students keep diaries for 14 days in 9th, 10th and 12th grades. After nights when a student gave up sleep to study more than usual, they had more trouble understanding class the next day and were more likely to struggle with a test or assignment.
So one bad night is not a disaster, and late-night cramming is not a free extra hour. If worry keeps you awake night after night, go to your school's or university's support services or a doctor; this guide is not medical advice.
What should you do the day before an exam?
The day before an exam is for review and logistics, not new topics. The Open University tutor's advice is "never ever go to bed late the night before".
The University of Leeds Library (n.d.-a) lists what to know in advance: date, time, room, when to arrive, what you may take in, ink or pencil, how long the exam lasts, and how many questions of what type. For GCSEs and A levels, the Joint Council for Qualifications (2026) adds knowing who to contact if an emergency makes you late, and asks summer 2027 candidates to stay available on the contingency day, 23 June 2027. Its kit list: a clear pencil case, at least two black ink pens (blue is not acceptable), an approved calculator and equipment such as a ruler where needed, and a clear water bottle with no label.
What should you do on the day of the exam?
On the day of the exam, arrive early, leave banned items outside, and read every question before answering. AQA (n.d.-b) suggests arriving 10 to 15 minutes before the start. JCQ (2026) bans any phone, any watch, smart devices such as earbuds and revision notes, and AQA warns that you can be penalised for having a phone or watch with you. University rules vary, so check your own.
In the room, AQA advises answering the question asked rather than the one you expected, using the marks as a guide to time, and coming back to a question you cannot answer. Exam technique gets its own guide.
How can EdCitation help with revision?
EdCitation helps where revision meets sources and instructions, and it is the best tool for those jobs because it looks every reference up in the publisher's record and never writes one: each study cited here was built from its DOI. It never writes any part of a student's work.
- Check your paper, free, reads an exam or assignment brief into a checklist, as in our run above. Judging a finished paper against that checklist is Theoretics QA, part of Max at $24 a month.
- Find sources, free, searches about 300 million published works for reading around a topic. Our search for "sleep and exam performance in university students" returned 6,099,708 works; first was a 2026 article on sleep and exam performance among medical students, and eighth a 2022 paper in Sleep Epidemiology, cited 12 times. Ninth compared ChatGPT with students on a microbiology exam, so read titles before saving.
- Cite a source, free, builds a reference in APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago 18 author-date, Harvard, IEEE or Vancouver and screens it for retraction. From 10.1038/s41539-019-0055-z it returned:
Okano, K., Kaczmarzyk, J. R., Dave, N., Gabrieli, J. D. E., & Grossman, J. C. (2019). Sleep quality, duration, and consistency are associated with better academic performance in college students. npj Science of Learning, 4(1), Article 16. https://doi.org/10.1038/s41539-019-0055-z
Plain text drops APA's italics for the journal name and volume; the tool's formatted entry keeps them. Gillen-O'Neel's title, deposited in title case, came back in the sentence case APA 7 asks for, "To study or to sleep? The academic costs…" (title case or sentence case). Buehler's needed no change, and none was flagged as retracted. Verify references, free, checked this guide's 15 references: 14 verified, and the JCQ page "could not be read here" because its site turns automated readers away, which is not the same as not found. Pricing has Pro and Max.
Quick questions
How far ahead should I start revising?
Start revising early enough for each topic to get more than one pass, plus slack: in Buehler and colleagues' study, students' best estimates were about three weeks too early.
What should a revision timetable include?
A revision timetable should include every exam date, your fixed commitments, topic sessions weighted by what each paper examines, weekly timed past papers, buffer slots and a free day, as in our template.
Should I revise my weakest topics first?
Revise your weakest topics first where every question is compulsory. Where the paper offers a choice, Reading and Leeds both suggest leaning on topics you understand, covering enough for a real choice.
Is it better to sleep or study the night before an exam?
Sleep. Okano and colleagues found the night before showed no link to the score while the weeks before did, and Gillen-O'Neel and colleagues linked trading sleep for study with more struggle next day.
Can EdCitation make a revision plan for me?
No. EdCitation's Check your paper turns a brief's instructions into a checklist; the timetable is yours, from our template.
