How to take notes in lectures: Cornell, outlines and laptops

Take notes in lectures in your own words, in a layout you can quiz yourself from, and go back to them the same week. That matters more than the method's name or the device: the study that made longhand famous used short talks in a laboratory, and two replications found the gap small or absent.

EdCitation publishes this guide. It covers the Cornell method from Cornell's own handout, the other methods as university learning pages teach them, the laptop studies, three universities' rules on recording, and how to keep the readings a lecturer mentions with EdCitation's Find sources and Cite a source. Every page was read on 27 September 2026. EdCitation never writes any part of your notes.

How do you take notes in a lecture, step by step?

Prepare the page before, write phrases during, and rebuild the notes the same day.

1. Before. Skim the posted slides or reading. Head the page with the module, lecture number and date.
2. During. Write main points as short phrases in your own words and mark anything to follow up. Newcastle University (n.d.) suggests treating notes as your own running commentary, not a record of everything.
3. When a source is named, write the author, year, a few title words and the slide number in a sources box.
4. The same day. Fill gaps, write a question for each point in the margin, and add a two or three sentence summary.
5. Within the week. Look each named source up in Find sources, build its reference in Cite a source, and save it.
6. Every week. Cover the notes, answer your margin questions aloud, then check. Self-testing and spacing have a guide of their own in this series.

What is the Cornell note-taking method?

The Cornell method splits each page into a narrow cue column on the left, a wide note column on the right and a summary strip across the bottom; notes go on the right during the lecture, and questions and summary are added afterwards. It was developed by Walter Pauk, a Cornell education professor, and spread through his book How to Study in College, first published in 1962 and in its 11th edition by 2022 (Wilensky, 2022).

The page and the five steps, as Cornell's handout gives them

Cornell's Learning Strategies Center hands out a one-page version adapted from the book's seventh edition of 2001 (Cornell University Learning Strategies Center, n.d.-a). It sets a 2½-inch cue column, a 6-inch note column and a 2-inch summary space. Those widths add up to 8½ inches, the width of US Letter paper; on A4, a cue column of about 6 cm works.

The handout's five steps:

• Record: in the lecture, notes in "telegraphic sentences".
• Questions: as soon after class as possible, questions drawn from the notes, written in the cue column.
• Recite: cover the notes and answer each question aloud, in your own words.
• Reflect: ask what the facts mean, what principle they rest on and how they fit what you know.
• Review: at least ten minutes a week going over all earlier notes.

Pauk's own instruction, quoted by Cornell's alumni magazine, is to leave the cue column empty while taking notes (Wilensky, 2022).

What could not be confirmed

We did not read Pauk's book. Cornell's web page cites the 10th edition of 2010, chapter "The Cornell System: Take Effective Notes" (Cornell University Learning Strategies Center, n.d.-b). Cornell's alumni magazine dates the system to the 1950s, when Pauk was a teaching assistant; some other accounts say the 1940s, and we could not settle it. Many websites list "five Rs" with Reduce as step two, where the handout says Questions; which wording each edition uses could not be checked. We read no study testing the Cornell layout itself. Its strength is the recite step: the cues work as prompts for active recall (University of York Library, 2026).

Which note-taking methods do universities teach besides Cornell?

The pages we read teach four others: outline, mapping, charting and sentence notes. York's guide was last updated on 5 August 2026 and Rochester's on 23 September 2026; the Chattanooga and Auckland pages carry no date.

Where the university pages disagree

On mapping, Chattanooga says "little thinking is needed", while York says it demands high concentration and can be time-consuming. On Cornell, Chattanooga lists its disadvantages as "None"; Rochester notes crowded pages, extra time to summarise, and no view of how concepts relate (University of Rochester Libraries, 2026). Both York and Chattanooga warn that outlines suit physics and mathematics less. Our reading: use outline or Cornell for structured lectures, a map or chart when relationships or comparisons are the point, and sentence notes only when speed forces it.

Is it better to take notes on a laptop or by hand?

The research does not settle it. Handwriting shows a small average advantage in one meta-analysis and none in two direct replications, and every study agrees that typists record more words, more of them verbatim.

Mueller and Oppenheimer (2014): the study behind the laptop bans

Mueller and Oppenheimer (2014) ran three studies. In the first, 67 Princeton students took notes on TED talks of just over 15 minutes, on offline laptops or on paper, and were tested about 30 minutes later. Factual recall did not differ; laptop users did worse on conceptual questions. Laptop notes averaged 309.6 words against 173.4, with 14.6% verbatim overlap with the talk against 8.8%. In the second, with 151 UCLA students, telling laptop users not to transcribe was, in the authors' words, "completely ineffective" at reducing verbatim notes. In the third, 109 students returned a week later; those who wrote by hand and had ten minutes to study their notes outperformed every other group. The journal published a correction in 2018 with updated data files; we could not open it, as the publisher's page asked for a robot check.

Morehead, Dunlosky and Rawson (2019): the replication

Morehead et al. (2019) repeated the study and added two groups: one writing on eWriters and one taking no notes. By the abstract, performance did not consistently differ between any groups over two experiments, including the group without notes, and differences shrank once students studied their notes. A meta-analysis of the direct replications found small, non-significant effects favouring longhand, and the authors call naming a winner "premature". The paper is paywalled, so we read only the abstract and give no figures.

Urry and colleagues (2021): a second direct replication

Urry et al. (2021) repeated the first study with 142 Tufts undergraduates. Laptop notes again held more words and more verbatim text, but longhand gave no better quiz scores; on conceptual questions the difference ran slightly the other way (g = -0.13). Across eight similar studies, longhand's advantage on the whole quiz was g = 0.04, not significant. Their stated limits: sessions run by about 80 students, often with distractions; TED talks, not real lectures; no chance to study before the test; and a meta-analysis they call preliminary.

Flanigan and colleagues (2024): the meta-analysis

Flanigan et al. (2024) pooled 24 studies of college students from 21 articles. Handwriting gave higher achievement, g = 0.248; typing gave more notes, g = 0.919. When students could review their notes before the test, handwriting's advantage was larger (g = 0.421) than without review (g = 0.208). Their illustration of a course averaging 75% has 9.5% of handwriters and 6.0% of typists earning an A, but that is a projection from the effect size, not grades anyone measured. They report that an earlier meta-analysis by Voyer and colleagues (2022), of 39 experiments, found the medium made little difference; we could not open it.

What the four papers add up to

The studies disagree on review: Morehead's group found studying notes shrank the gap, Flanigan's pooled studies found it grew. None of them allowed internet use, so the distraction a connected laptop brings is a separate question. Cornell's own learning centre states flatly that research shows handwriting is more effective (Cornell University Learning Strategies Center, n.d.-b); the replications leave it open. Our view: use whichever you will review, and if you type, type into a Cornell-style page and write questions afterwards, because a warning not to transcribe did not work in 2014.

Can you record a lecture or use an AI note-taker?

Only as your university's policy allows, and policies differ.

• Penn State says a student "must not record" teaching without the instructor's express permission, with an exception for disability accommodations required by law. It also says lecture notes should interpret the lecture, not transcribe it (Pennsylvania State University, 2020).
• Edinburgh gives students a right under its accessible learning policy to record lecture audio, and video with permission, for their own learning. Students may use the university's own recordings only for personal study, and must destroy their copies once the final assessment is over or they leave (University of Edinburgh, 2023).
• Canterbury allows personal recordings only with the lecturer's explicit permission. It approves Otter.ai only for students registered with its accessibility service, subject to lecturers' approval, and those students agree to delete transcripts within three weeks; lecturers may refuse because the tool may use recordings to train its model (University of Canterbury, 2026).

A recording is not a set of notes: it still has to be selected and put in your own words. Outside the lecture hall, see recording a meeting: the law on consent and AI note-takers in meetings.

How do you turn lecture notes into revision?

Turn each page into questions you can answer without looking. Flanigan et al. (2024) report that, in the studies that counted, students noted only about 30% of a lecture's ideas, so fill gaps from the slides, the recording or a classmate the same day. Then:

• Answer the cue questions aloud each week and mark the ones you miss.
• Build a chart across lectures when a module compares theories or cases; York recommends charting for pulling several sources together.

How do you keep track of the sources a lecturer mentions?

Write down enough to find each source again, then look it up the same week. A slide that says "Mueller and Oppenheimer, 2014" is a lead; the reference you hand in comes from the record.

A worked example with EdCitation

A search in EdCitation's Find sources for "laptop versus longhand note taking" returned 1,011,956 results; the response named Crossref as the index it searched. Mueller and Oppenheimer's paper was seventh on the first page, cited 788 times by its record.

Given the paper's DOI, Cite a source built this APA 7 reference, in a rerun on 27 September 2026:

Mueller, P. A., & Oppenheimer, D. M. (2014). The pen is mightier than the keyboard: Advantages of longhand over laptop note taking. Psychological Science, 25(6), 1159–1168. https://doi.org/10.1177/0956797614524581

It also flagged a 2018 correction notice and marked the paper not retracted. The other three DOIs came back the same way, matched in Crossref; Urry's 88 authors were shortened to APA 7's first nineteen, an ellipsis and the last. All four titles were deposited in title case, and all four came back in sentence case, as APA 7 wants for article titles, with capitals kept for the opening word, the word after a colon, names, and Urry's "Study 1".

Why this belongs in EdCitation

For a half-remembered name on a slide, EdCitation is the best tool there is: it fetches the work's own record rather than writing a reference from memory, which is how the 2018 correction turned up here, and no chatbot can promise that. Finding, citing (in APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago 18 author-date, Harvard, IEEE or Vancouver) and Verify references are free, with no sign-up. Sign up free and you can keep a reading list and reference lists tagged by module; checks of a finished paper come with Pro at $8 a month or Max at $24 a month (see Pricing). Verify references checked this guide's 15 references: 13 verified and 2 could not be checked, both PDFs it does not open; none was called "not found". Newcastle's page was checked at its own address: "The page is at this address, and its title matches."

Quick questions

Does the Cornell note-taking method work?

The Cornell method's recite step, answering cue questions with the notes covered, is a form of self-testing. We read no study testing the layout itself, so its benefit comes from using the cues, not from the lines on the page.

Should I take lecture notes on a laptop or by hand?

Either can work. Flanigan and colleagues (2024) found a small advantage for handwriting; two direct replications found none, and every study found typists copy more word for word.

Can I record my lectures?

Only as your university's policy allows. Penn State and Canterbury require the lecturer's permission, Edinburgh lets students record audio for their own learning, and Penn State and Canterbury make exceptions for disability-related support.

Can I use an AI note-taker in lectures?

Check your university's policy first. Canterbury, for example, approves Otter.ai only for students registered with its accessibility service, with lecturers' approval, and asks for transcripts to be deleted within three weeks.

How do I find a paper my lecturer mentioned?

Search the author and title words in EdCitation's Find sources, then paste the DOI into Cite a source to build the reference from the record.
