How to write a counterargument and rebuttal in an essay

A counterargument is the strongest objection a thoughtful reader could make to your thesis, and the rebuttal is your answer to it. Writing a counterargument and rebuttal paragraph takes two turns: towards the other side, stated fairly and with its source, then back to your claim, by refuting the objection, conceding that it weighs less, or narrowing what you claim.

EdCitation publishes this guide. On 27 September 2026 we read nine universities' and writing labs' pages and the Common Core standards. They agree on the move and disagree on its names. The example paragraphs are ours; the opposing view in them comes from a published study we read in full. The essay around this paragraph is in how to write an argumentative essay.

The strongest objection is usually already in print. EdCitation's free Find sources searches published work for it, so you answer a real researcher rather than a straw man, and Cite a source builds the reference from the publisher's record.

What are a counterargument and a rebuttal?

A counterargument is an objection to your thesis, or to one step in your reasoning, that a reasonable reader could raise; a rebuttal is the reply that shows why your claim still stands. Harvard College Writing Center (n.d.) suggests treating counterarguments as other possible answers to the essay's question, and lists what one can target: a conclusion drawn from evidence, an assumption, a key term, evidence left out, a drawback, a consequence, or another reading of the evidence.

The same words, used in different ways

Your brief may use any of these words, and the guides do not use them alike.

University of Nevada, Reno University Writing & Speaking Center (n.d.) gives a counterargument two steps: acknowledge the other view, then refute it. University of Michigan Sweetland Center for Writing (n.d.) makes rebuttal the umbrella word: a refutation attacks an objection's weaknesses, a counterargument grants its strengths first. The Common Core State Standards Initiative (n.d.) asks grades 9 and 10 to develop "claim(s) and counterclaims fairly", and Monash University (n.d.) lists counter-claims in a good argument's structure. Whatever your brief's words, say which you mean.

What the Toulmin model means by rebuttal

Purdue Online Writing Lab (n.d.) calls the Toulmin rebuttal an acknowledgement of another valid view, paired with the qualifier, which shows a claim may not hold in every case. Excelsior Online Writing Lab (n.d.-b) describes it as the author addressing opposing views. Toulmin's own chapter is behind the publisher's login, so we have not read his wording.

Where does the counterargument go in an essay?

There is no single right place. Between them the guides name five, and the two that discuss the conclusion itself, Harvard and Washington's Odegaard Center, rule it out.

1. Before the thesis, when the other view is the reason your essay exists (Harvard; Brandeis).
2. Just after the introduction, when readers need the standard view cleared first (Harvard; Brandeis).
3. Inside a body paragraph, a sentence or two answering an objection to that paragraph's point (Brandeis; Nevada Reno; Michigan suggests an objection and response for each claim).
4. Just before the conclusion, which Harvard calls common and effective and Michigan calls "tried and true".
5. As the whole essay, when you are answering someone else's argument (Michigan; Harvard).

Harvard warns that the conclusion leaves no room to answer an objection, and University of Washington Odegaard Writing & Research Center (n.d.) that it is what the reader is left with. The whole shape is in how to structure an essay.

How do you write a counterargument paragraph, step by step?

Brandeis University Writing Program (n.d.), adapting Gordon Harvey's The Elements of the Academic Essay, calls the two halves "the turn against" and "the turn back". The steps follow that shape.

1. Find the strongest objection, in print. Search for evidence against your claim as well as for it; EdCitation's Find sources does this free.
2. Name who holds it. The Odegaard handout warns that a vague concession tends to become a fallacy: make clear who is arguing with you.
3. State it at its strongest, briefly. Brandeis asks for the case against you "as briefly but as clearly and forcefully" as you can.
4. Choose your response: refute, concede and outweigh, or qualify (the table below).
5. Signal the turn back with a word that tells the reader which response is coming.
6. End on your claim, in the form that survived.
7. Cite the source you answered. Cite a source builds the reference from its DOI.

The phrases the guides suggest

Brandeis opens the turn against with "One might object here that...", "Admittedly," or "Of course,", or a question such as "But isn't this just...?", and turns back with but, yet, however, nevertheless or still. Harvard draws a line Brandeis does not: but and however signal a refutation, while nevertheless and still signal that your argument survives the objection. Nevada Reno suggests although and however. For attacking an objection's reasoning, the University of Manchester (n.d.) Academic Phrasebank offers stems such as "The main weakness with this theory is that …". More are in signposting and linking words.

How should you respond: refute, concede or qualify?

Choose the response your evidence allows, not the one that sounds most confident. The guides name three, and Harvard adds two.

When to refute and when to concede

Here the guides pull apart. Michigan grants that refutation is sometimes the best or only ethical approach, but says the cooperative counterargument usually brings readers round more effectively. The Odegaard handout calls presenting the other side and then "tearing it apart" often very effective. Both can be right: refute an objection whose evidence is weak, concede one whose evidence is sound.

Brandeis sets the limit: if the objection touches one part of your argument, qualify; if it undermines the whole case, you need a new thesis. The narrowing words are in hedging and cautious language.

What are the common mistakes in a counterargument?

Three faults recur, each named in a guide we read.

A straw man

Excelsior Online Writing Lab (n.d.-a) defines the straw man as distorting or exaggerating an argument and attacking the distorted version, which looks like a refutation without engaging the real idea. In a paragraph the tell is an opponent with no name and a position no researcher holds. The fallacy is covered in logical fallacies and how to answer them.

A token counterargument

Harvard says a counterargument should not be added after the essay is finished just because one is expected, and Brandeis says a feeble or perfunctory one "does more harm than good". A quick test: if deleting the paragraph would change nothing else in the essay, it was a token.

Conceding too much

Brandeis warns that too many counterarguments hide the main idea or hint that the writer is ambivalent. The Odegaard handout suggests at most one concession per paragraph, or the concessions become the argument. Harvard adds that you need not answer every possible objection.

Counterargument and rebuttal examples on one topic

These three paragraphs are ours, written for this guide, on the question "Should secondary schools ban phones during the school day?" Our thesis: secondary schools should keep phones out of lessons. The opposing view is real.

Goodyear et al. (2025) surveyed 1,227 pupils aged 12 to 15 at 30 English secondary schools, 20 that did not permit recreational phone use and 10 that did. They found no evidence of a difference in mental wellbeing, sleep, physical activity, English and maths attainment or disruptive behaviour. Pupils at restrictive schools spent less time on phones during school time (0.67 hours less) but no less across weekdays or weekends. More phone and social media time was associated with worse wellbeing, attainment and behaviour. The authors say their findings do not support restrictive policies "in their current form", call for a more holistic approach, and note that a cross-sectional design makes conclusions about cause difficult.

Version one: the straw man (ours, do not copy)

Some people think phones should be allowed everywhere in school because teenagers cannot live without them. This is obviously wrong, as phones are a distraction.

Nobody is named, nobody researching the question holds that position, and the reply is an assertion.

Version two: refute (ours)

Turn against. The strongest case against a ban comes from Goodyear and colleagues, who found no evidence that pupils at 20 English schools restricting phones had better wellbeing, sleep or attainment than pupils at 10 schools that allowed them. Turn back. However, the study compared schools at a single point in time, and its authors acknowledge that this makes conclusions about cause difficult: schools that ban phones may differ from those that do not in ways a survey cannot capture. It shows an absence of evidence that bans help, not evidence that they do nothing.

This refutation has a cost it must admit: a cross-sectional study cannot show that bans work either, so the paragraph buys the thesis time, not proof.

Version three: concede and qualify (ours)

Turn against. Goodyear and colleagues found no evidence that restrictive phone policies at English secondary schools were associated with better wellbeing, sleep, attainment or behaviour, and pupils there used their phones no less over the day as a whole. Concession. On that evidence, a ban cannot be defended as a cure for poor wellbeing. Turn back. Still, the same study found that pupils at restrictive schools spent less time on phones during the school day, and that more phone time went with lower attainment and more disruptive behaviour. The claim this essay can defend is narrower: schools should keep phones out of lessons as one part of a wider approach, close to the authors' own call, not as a measure that will improve wellbeing by itself.

Version three is stronger: it gives the study its full weight, concedes in one sentence, and ends on a claim. In Purdue's Toulmin terms the study is the rebuttal and "as one part of a wider approach" the qualifier. Weighing several studies is in synthesis, not summary.

How EdCitation helps you find and answer the strongest objection

For the first step of a counterargument, EdCitation is the best tool we know of: every result is a record it looked up, never a source it wrote, while a chatbot asked for "a study that disagrees" can produce one that does not exist. Find sources looks through about 300 million published works: type a topic, or the very claim you want to test, then narrow by kind of source, years or open access. It costs nothing and needs no account. We ran it on 27 September 2026.

The topic search missed the strongest paper. The claim as a sentence brought up, second, a 2026 letter to the editor titled "Do smartphone bans improve adolescent mental health? Limitations of cross-sectional evidence", unread by us, where a refutation like version two would start. The researchers' own words put the study first. Sorted by most cited, it came second, behind a 2022 paper on family, school and peer relationships cited 228 times.

Citing the source you answered

Given the DOI, Cite a source returned this APA 7 reference from Crossref's record, with no retraction or correction notice:

Goodyear, V. A., Randhawa, A., Adab, P., Al-Janabi, H., Fenton, S., Jones, K., Michail, M., Morrison, B., Patterson, P., Quinlan, J., Sitch, A., Twardochleb, R., Wade, M., & Pallan, M. (2025). The Lancet Regional Health – Europe, 51, Article 101211. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.lanepe.2025.101211

All fourteen authors and the article number are there, and the formatted copy italicises the journal and volume. The journal's name keeps the dash the journal itself uses before "Europe", so the entry matches our list below word for word.

EdCitation never writes, rewrites or edits any part of an essay. The turn against, the concession and the turn back are yours, and they are what a marker reads for.

Quick questions

What is the difference between a counterargument and a rebuttal?

A counterargument is the objection to your thesis; the rebuttal is your reply. Some guides use counterargument for both halves, and Michigan's Sweetland Center for one cooperative kind of rebuttal, so follow your brief's wording.

How long should a counterargument paragraph be?

None of the guides we read sets a word count. Brandeis asks for the objection stated briefly, and Nevada Reno allows a sentence or two inside a body paragraph.

Where do I put the counterargument in an essay?

Commonly in the paragraph before the conclusion, but also before the thesis, after the introduction or inside a body paragraph. Never in the conclusion, where there is no room to answer it.

How do I find a strong counterargument?

Search published work for the opposing claim in its researchers' own words. EdCitation's free Find sources returns only records it looked up, so the view you answer is real.

Can EdCitation write my rebuttal?

No. EdCitation never writes, rewrites or edits any part of an essay. It finds the opposing research, cites it from the publisher's record and checks your references; the argument is yours.
