Medical textbooks date on the shelf, and so do the lists that set them. Oxford's clinical medicine library guide, revised on 10 September 2026, still sets the 2017 Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine and the 2018 editions of Macleod's Clinical Examination and Davidson's; all three have newer editions. Warwick Medical School asks for the "latest edition" of Kumar and Clark, whose eleventh, from June 2025, names neither Kumar nor Clark as an editor.

Which textbooks do medical students need?
Medical students need six kinds of book: core science texts, a clinical examination book, a clinical medicine textbook, a pocket handbook, a drug reference, and question banks or revision guides.

The rows come from the University of Warwick (2024), Bodleian Libraries (2026), University of Southern California Libraries (2026a), University at Buffalo Libraries (2026) and Harvard Library (2026).
UK and US lists work differently
Warwick's page, for students starting in 2025, expects one book per category to last the course and suggests trying the library's copies before buying. Oxford's guide gives each of its four key texts a print and an ebook ISBN. The US lists run course by course, and USC's gives every title an ISBN and a date.
Question banks and revision guides
Harvard's Countway Library offers question banks for USMLE Step 1, 2 and 3, and USC's study aids include Board Review Series titles, most dated 2013 and 2014 (University of Southern California Libraries, 2026b). Textbooks carry questions too: Kumar and Clark's eleventh edition adds self-assessment questions and marks in its index the conditions the UK's Medical Licensing Assessment (MLA) requires (Elsevier, n.d.-b), and Davidson's 24th adds more than 150 (Elsevier, n.d.-a).
Why do editions matter more in medicine?
Because a clinical book's advice follows guidelines, drug information and classifications that keep changing after it is printed.
- NICE's guideline on hypertension in adults, NG136, came out in August 2019 and has changed three times: in March 2022, with a new recommendation on antihypertensive drug treatment for people with cardiovascular disease, in November 2023 and in February 2026. NICE says research on how different ethnic groups respond to these drugs may change it again (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence [NICE], 2026).
- The Oxford Textbook of Medicine's chapter on treating essential hypertension dates from 2020 (Williams & Firth, 2020), before all three updates.
- For drug information, Warwick's list gives the BNF as an online link, not a printed edition.
- The World Health Organization (n.d.) records that ICD-11, its classification of diseases, came into effect on 1 January 2022.
- Elsevier describes many of the 32 videos in the fifteenth Macleod's as new or revised to follow the latest guidance (Elsevier, n.d.-c).
What we could not confirm
None of the lists read says which subjects can safely be learned from an older edition, and we found no medical school that says so in writing.
Which edition of a medical textbook should I buy?
Buy the edition your list names, or the newest where it says "latest edition", and whichever you read, check doses in the current BNF and treatment in the current guideline.

Finding the edition a list names, by its ISBN
- Copy the list's entry in full, ISBN included.
- Search the ISBN in EdCitation's Library. Oxford's print ISBN for the handbook, 9780199689903, returned the tenth edition, 2017, Oxford University Press.
- Search the title sorted newest first, to see whether a newer edition exists.
- If there is, see what the publisher says changed, then check with your module lead.
- Build the reference from the ISBN or DOI in Cite a source, then check it against the title page.
When an older edition will do
When your list names it, or your module lead agrees. Oxford's and USC's guides, both revised in 2026, still set editions from 2017 and 2018. A print copy and an ebook of one edition take the same reference format (American Psychological Association, 2026).
How do I cite a medical textbook in Vancouver and APA 7?
Copy the details from the book's title and copyright pages and set them in your course's style: Vancouver, as the National Library of Medicine (2026) samples show it, or APA 7. Each example below started in EdCitation's Cite a source, which needs no account and looks each work up in its published record rather than composing an entry, and was then corrected against the book.
A textbook or handbook
From the eleventh edition's ISBN, 9780198844013, Cite a source returned on 27 September 2026:

That is five of the six authors and no edition, as the library record has it. From the DOI, 10.1093/med/9780198844013.001.0001, it returned all six authors, the 11th edition, the publisher and the DOI, with the title in sentence case, as APA asks. Give it the DOI:

Cite a source's own Vancouver entry, from the DOI, gave the same six authors, the edition and "Oxford: Oxford University Press", and a seventh author would bring "et al." after the sixth. Read online, the entry adds "[Internet]", the date you read it and the address, then the DOI, as Citing Medicine's own example does; here the address is the DOI link, so your course may ask for only one.
A chapter in an edited clinical text
Each chapter of the multi-volume Oxford Textbook of Medicine carries its own authors under the book's editors. From a chapter's DOI, Cite a source returned:

The authors, title, edition, pages and DOI are right. The editor is not: Jeremy Dwight edits the section, and the chapter's record names only him. The book's editors, in the NLM's catalogue record, are John D. Firth, Christopher P. Conlon and Timothy M. Cox (National Library of Medicine, n.d.). Corrected:

A clinical guideline
Given NICE's address, Cite a source read the page, took the tab's title, "Overview | Hypertension in adults: diagnosis and management | Guidance", found no author or date, and offered its form for correcting them. With the institute's full name entered as an organisation and the last update, 26 February 2026, as the date, it returned:

APA sets a guideline as a report: the year alone, a capital after the colon, the number in brackets, and no site name when it repeats the author.

APA's own example of this guideline carries 2019, yet the same page says an updated guideline takes the year of its update (American Psychological Association, 2026). Vancouver keeps the first year and adds the update, in the pattern Swansea University (2024) gives:

How do I find journal articles and systematic reviews for a medical assignment?
Search EdCitation's Find sources, free across about 300 million published works, with the kind of study set to what the question needs. For this guide, intensive blood pressure lowering hypertension, with the quick set "Systematic reviews and meta-analyses" and 2020 as the first year, returned 5,264 results, led by a 2021 individual participant-level data meta-analysis in The Lancet, marked open access.
Checking the finished list
Verify references, also free with no account, took the three Vancouver examples above. All three came back verified: the handbook and the chapter from their DOIs, and the guideline from its page, since guidelines are in no publisher's index; Verify references opened the address and found the title matched. Still check the guideline's update date on NICE's page, because guidance changes after you cite it. The best place to put a medical reading list together is EdCitation's Library, because medicine's books change editors and even titles between editions, and the Library shows a title's editions in a single list, each with its year and names. Tracing this guide's five editions took four schools' lists, four Elsevier pages and a DOI record.
