There is no single referencing style at the University of Auckland. Its QuickCite guide covers nine (University of Auckland, 2026n), and the faculty page says your lecturer will tell you which to use. APA 7th is listed most often, so it gets most of this guide.
Students still search for Referencite (styled Referen©ite), the university's older referencing site. Its cite.auckland.ac.nz addresses now forward to Learning Essentials and to QuickCite, which holds the rules and examples.
EdCitation is not affiliated with the University of Auckland; this follows its public library guide, checked on 2 October 2026. EdCitation publishes this guide; its last sections quote what the free Cite a source and Verify references returned on New Zealand sources and on QuickCite's own sample list. For Auckland's neighbours, see referencing at New Zealand and Irish universities.
Which referencing style does the University of Auckland use?
The style your lecturer or course outline names; if unsure, ask your lecturer or tutor. QuickCite's faculty page lists these (University of Auckland, 2026l):
| Faculty | Styles QuickCite lists |
|---|---|
| Arts and Education | APA, Harvard, Chicago, MLA, University of Auckland Style |
| Business and Economics | APA |
| Engineering and Design | APA, IEEE, Harvard, Chicago, MLA |
| Law | NZLSG |
| Medical and Health Sciences | Vancouver, APA |
| Science | Set by department (below) |
| Theology | Chicago |
Science, department by department
A Science sheet from the University of Auckland (2025) goes department by department:
- APA 7th: Biological Sciences, Exercise Sciences, Forensic Science, Marine Science, Psychology and Speech Science.
- Harvard: Food Science (no version prescribed), Geology (which also recommends journal styles such as Economic Geology's) and Physics.
- ACS: Chemical Sciences.
- No set style: Computer Science (APA or IEEE may be used), Environment, Mathematics and Statistics; Geography varies.
APA appears under four of the seven faculty headings and for six Science departments, more than any other style.
What are Auckland's APA 7th rules?
They are the 2020 Publication Manual's, which QuickCite follows with New Zealand examples (University of Auckland, 2026d). Our APA 7 in-text citations guide covers the manual itself.
In the text
- (Taylor, 1995) or Taylor (1995); "&" inside brackets, "and" in a sentence.
- Et al. for three or more authors, from the first citation (University of Auckland, 2026f).
- A group's abbreviation in square brackets the first time, (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 1994), then (CDC, 1994).
- No author: the title's first words in title case and double quotation marks, ("When Hiring Execs," 2017).
- Quotations take a page, (Northouse, 2015, p. 246); without pages, "para." and a number; audio and video, a time stamp (University of Auckland, 2026h). Forty words or more go in a block indented 1.27 cm.
- Your own interview participants are quoted, not referenced: use a pseudonym or Participant A.
In the reference list
- "References", double spaced, with a 1.27 cm hanging indent; six named fonts, Times New Roman 12 and Calibri 11 among them, unless the course outline differs (University of Auckland, 2026a).
- Every author up to 20; from 21, the first 19, an ellipsis, then the last.
- Sentence case for article and book titles; journals in title case and italics.
- A DOI as https://doi.org/…, else the URL; a database article or e-book without a DOI is referenced as print.
- Books take the copyright date, the edition after the title, such as (2nd Australian & New Zealand ed.), and several publishers separated by semicolons (University of Auckland, 2026c).
- The University of Auckland (2026j) is blunt about web pages: "The last reviewed date cannot be used as a publication date." A retrieval date goes in only where content is updated regularly; a person's page names the site, an organisation's does not.
- Reports put their number in brackets after the title and drop the publisher when it is the author (University of Auckland, 2026i).
Where QuickCite's examples slip
Copy the templates, not every example. Most examples join page ranges with a hyphen (275-286), where the manual and EdCitation use an en dash (86–91). Two journal examples carry months, "(2003, Jul)", against the year-only template. Several example addresses, the Waitangi Tribunal's te reo Māori text among them, returned error 404 on 2 October 2026: check current addresses.
How do you cite te reo Māori sources and New Zealand government documents?
By QuickCite's own APA 7th rules for bilingual works, Indigenous knowledge and New Zealand law.
Bilingual authors and titles
Keep a bilingual author or title in the document's order (University of Auckland, 2026b). An author's two names take a hyphen between them, a title's two versions a slash: QuickCite's example is Te Whāriki, its te reo Māori title, a slash, then "Early childhood curriculum". Cite a bilingual author by both names, (Ministry of Education-Te Tāhuhu o Te Mātauranga, 2015), and keep every macron.
Works in another language take an English translation in square brackets (University of Auckland, 2026k). QuickCite gives no separate rule for a work wholly in te reo Māori, so ask your lecturer whether to translate its title.
Indigenous knowledge and oral traditions
Recorded knowledge (a book, a published interview, a video) is cited as that source (University of Auckland, 2026e). Knowledge shared in conversation by someone who was not your participant is a personal communication, in the text only: (Full Name, iwi, lives in place, personal communication, Month Day, Year), with their permission to name them. An Indigenous writer sharing their own knowledge describes themselves in the text instead.
Acts, Bills, cases and Te Tiriti o Waitangi
For students outside law, the University of Auckland (2026g) adapts its legal page from the New Zealand Law Style Guide, as the APA manual's legal section covers United States law. Law students use NZLSG itself.
- Acts, regulations and Bills: name and year in title case, a Bill's number after it, then the address; in the text, (Misuse of Drugs Act 1975) or (Resource Management Act 1991, s. 10B).
- Cases: the name in italics, with the neutral citation and the New Zealand Law Reports where they exist: Woolworths New Zealand Ltd v. Auckland Council [2023] NZSC 45, [2023] 1 NZLR 113.
- Te Tiriti o Waitangi: each text its own entry, dated February 6, 1840: "Te Tiriti o Waitangi: Te reo Māori text".
None follows the author-date pattern: type them by hand.
How do you reference at Auckland Uni in APA 7th?
Follow QuickCite's template for each kind of source. Here are three articles, a bilingual New Zealand page and an Act. In the text:
Appleby (2020) describes improving services through a youth forensic forum, and Wong and Lam (2007) report student learning outcomes from problem-based learning in social work. Cocoa cooperatives in Manus province face their own development challenges (Garnevska et al., 2014). The professional body sets out what social work is (Aotearoa New Zealand Association of Social Workers [ANZASW], n.d.); later citations read (ANZASW, n.d.). New Zealand classifies controlled drugs by statute (Misuse of Drugs Act 1975).
Under "References", double spaced with hanging indents:

The undated web page, an organisation's, takes no site name; its two titles take QuickCite's slash.
Which EdCitation style is closest, and what do you change by hand?
For six of QuickCite's nine styles, EdCitation builds the same style or a close relative.
| QuickCite style | Based on, as its page says | Build it in | Change by hand |
|---|---|---|---|
| APA 7th | Publication Manual, 7th edition | APA 7 | Journal articles: nothing. Web pages: fix author and title in the form, delete "Retrieved … from" unless the page changes often, join two-language titles with a slash. Acts, cases: type them. |
| Harvard | No manual named | Harvard | Year unbracketed; "&" with no comma; no quotation marks round the article title, capital after its colon; 20(3): 419-438 for "20(3), pp. 419–438"; no DOI in QuickCite's journal template; six authors, then et al.; "Place: Publisher" for books; a page in every citation. |
| Vancouver | NLM Citing Medicine and the ICMJE recommendations | Vancouver | Drop the month and day after the year. Page ranges already come short (419-38), as QuickCite asks. |
| MLA 9th, IEEE | MLA Handbook, 9th edition; IEEE Editorial Style Manual and Reference Guide | MLA 9, IEEE | Compare with QuickCite's examples. |
| Chicago 18th | Chicago Manual of Style, 18th edition, footnotes | Not built | EdCitation builds Chicago 18 author-date only; write footnotes by hand. |
| NZLSG, UoA Style, ACS | NZLSG 3rd edition; UoA Style names none; the ACS guide | Not built | Write them from QuickCite's templates. |
Building an Auckland list, step by step
- Find the style in your course outline; if it names none, ask your lecturer or tutor.
- Search about 300 million published works in EdCitation's Find sources, by topic or by the claim a sentence needs.
- Paste each DOI or web address into Cite a source and choose the style, or its nearest relative from the table.
- For a web page, correct the author, title and date in the form before the entry is built.
- Make the hand changes above; type Acts, cases and personal communications yourself.
- Paste the list into Verify references and settle every "check this" at the source.
- Check your paper turns the assignment's instructions, style and formatting included, into a free checklist.
What did EdCitation return on Auckland sources?
Start an Auckland list in Cite a source, the best tool for the job because it never writes a reference: it looks each one up in the publisher's record, or reads the web page and lets you correct its details, sets it in APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago 18 author-date, Harvard, IEEE or Vancouver, and screens it for retraction. A chatbot cannot show where its entry came from; on QuickCite's Appleby example, Cite a source matched letter for letter. It is free, with no account. EdCitation never writes any part of a student's paper: the reading, the argument and every sentence stay the student's. Our runs, on 2 October 2026:
Cite a source on articles and New Zealand pages
- Appleby (10.11157/anzswj-vol32iss1id709): APA 7 matched QuickCite's example exactly.
- Garnevska and colleagues (10.1080/13602381.2014.931046): APA matched QuickCite but for the en dash. Harvard returned Cite Them Right's "Garnevska, E., Joseph, H. and Kingi, T. (2014) ‘Development and challenges of cocoa cooperatives in Papua New Guinea: case of Manus province’, Asia Pacific Business Review, 20(3), pp. 419–438. Available at: https://doi.org/10.1080/13602381.2014.931046.", where QuickCite's Harvard has "Garnevska, E., Joseph, H. & Kingi, T. 2014." and "20(3): 419-438."
- The ANZASW page: from the address alone, APA returned "Media, A. (n.d.). He aha te mahi pāpori? | What is social work? Retrieved October 2, 2026, from" and the address, taking the author from the page's "Asset Media" tag. With the association entered as an organisation and a slash in the title, APA returned "Aotearoa New Zealand Association of Social Workers. (n.d.). He aha te mahi pāpori?/What is social work? Retrieved October 2, 2026, from https://www.anzasw.nz/index.cfm//about-us/what-is-social-work/". Delete the retrieval date unless the page changes regularly.
- The Misuse of Drugs Act page: "That page could not be read. Some sites block automated readers. If it is a journal article, paste its DOI or its title instead." Type the Act; it is one line.
Verify references on QuickCite's own sample list
We pasted seven entries from QuickCite's sample APA list as printed (University of Auckland, 2026a). Verify references marked five verified and two "check this":
- Diekema and colleagues, and Wenger: verified, "The DOI resolves to this record and the title matches."
- Applin and colleagues: "check this", "No registry holds the DOI 10.1046/j.1365-2923.2001.00915. The work is on record with the DOI 10.1016/j.nedt.2010.05.003." Use the second DOI.
- Chen, 2023: "check this", "The work was published in 2022, not 2023; the record has no date in 2023." The publisher's page shows "Copyright 2023" (Routledge, n.d.), the date QuickCite asks for: the entry stands.
- Wong and Lam: verified, noting "Its full title adds 'A Study of Student Learning Outcomes', which your entry leaves out; check whether your style wants it." Add "student", as Cite a source's APA entry from the DOI already does.
- Williamson Sullenberger and Chang, and the ANZASW page: verified, "The page is at this address, and its title matches." Yet the journal's page names Valerie Chang while QuickCite's sample paragraph cites "(Williamson Sullenberger & Wang, 2009)", and the ANZASW page now spells pāpori with a macron.
A university's own model list held a wrong DOI, a short title and a mismatched co-author, and one "check this" was a correct entry: open each one. For a whole paper, References from a file checks every reference and matches every in-text citation to the list, and Mechanics QA checks the formatting against the APA 7 student paper; both are part of Pro, $8 a month (pricing).
Quick questions
Does the University of Auckland still use Referencite?
No. Old Referencite addresses forward to Learning Essentials and to QuickCite, which now holds Auckland's rules and examples for nine styles.
Which referencing style should I use at Auckland?
The one your course outline or lecturer names. QuickCite lists APA for business and economics, NZLSG for law, Chicago for theology, and several styles elsewhere.
Is Auckland Harvard the same as Cite Them Right Harvard?
No. QuickCite's Harvard leaves the year unbracketed, joins volume and pages with a colon, lists six authors before et al. and puts a page in every citation, such as (Jones 2023: 21) (University of Auckland, 2026m).
How do I reference a New Zealand Act in APA at Auckland?
Give the Act's name and year in title case, then its legislation.govt.nz address, with no author or bracketed date; in the text, (Misuse of Drugs Act 1975).
Can EdCitation build NZLSG, Chicago footnotes or UoA Style?
No. EdCitation's Cite a source builds APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago 18 author-date, Harvard, IEEE and Vancouver; NZLSG, Chicago footnotes, UoA Style and ACS are written by hand from QuickCite.
Will EdCitation write part of my Auckland assignment?
No. EdCitation finds sources, builds each reference from its published record and checks the list; the ideas, the argument and every sentence are yours.
