This guide is published by EdCitation, the citation tool that builds each reference from the publisher's record, and it gives EdCitation's view of when to use MLA style. The view is ours. The facts behind it were read at their sources on 23 September 2026: the Modern Language Association's own pages, the Chicago Manual of Style Online, and two university English departments.
In one line: use MLA when the words of a text are what you are studying, and another style when the date of a finding, a numbered list or a footnote matters more than the page. If your brief, department or journal names a style, that style wins.
The styles are compared in APA vs MLA vs Chicago, and MLA's rules are in the Works Cited guide and the MLA 9 paper format guide.
When should I use MLA style?
Use MLA style when you quote a text closely and argue about what it says: an essay on a novel, a poem or a play, a study of a language or culture, a film or media essay, or a school English essay where the teacher has named no other style.
The common thread is that the source is itself the object of study: evidence you read line by line, not a finding you report. Modern Language Association (n.d.-c) lists song lyrics, online images and social media posts among the works its template can cite, alongside books and articles.
Why does MLA cite the page and not the year?
MLA cites the page because its in-text citation exists to send the reader to the passage, not to date the source. Modern Language Association (2021b) describes the citation as a short pointer to the Works Cited entry: it opens with whatever begins that entry, usually the author's surname, and when you quote or paraphrase a particular part of a work with page numbers, line numbers or time stamps, it adds that location. So a quotation is cited as (Baron 194), with no year and no comma.
Where the date goes instead
The date sits in the Works Cited entry. In a post written for the eighth edition, the Modern Language Association (2017) says you may also give a date in your own sentence, such as the year a book first appeared, and that it need not match anything in the list.
Why that suits literary study
This is our view, argued from those rules. In literary and language study the claim is about the words: what a line says, how a scene is built. A reader checking it needs the passage, and a page, line or time stamp goes straight there. The year of an edition of Hamlet tells them little, and when it does matter, MLA lets you say so in the sentence.
Author-date styles do a different job. The University of Chicago Press (n.d.) says its author-date system is preferred by many in the sciences and social sciences because it names researchers in the text while giving weight to each source's date. A year tells the reader how current a finding is; a page tells them where the words are.
What is MLA style for, in the MLA's own words?
The MLA describes its style as standards for writing and documentation that help writers find and weigh information, show readers why their findings can be trusted, and join a conversation with other writers (Modern Language Association, n.d.-c).
The template of core elements
Since the eighth edition in 2016, MLA has built every entry from one list of core elements, facts most sources share such as author, title and date, rather than a format for each kind of source. Modern Language Association (n.d.-d) explains why: formats are now combined, as with a song streamed online that first came out on an album decades ago, or cannot be defined at all, so one rule per format stopped working.
The same page says the model serves writers in every field, "from the sciences to the humanities". Here our view parts from the MLA's. The template can cite anything, but the in-text citation still leaves out the year, and in the sciences the year is often the point.
Who uses MLA style?
MLA style is used mainly in literature, languages and the other humanities, and in school and college English. The MLA says its members have worked for over a century to strengthen the study and teaching of language and literature (Modern Language Association, n.d.-a), and it pitches the ninth edition of its handbook at middle school, high school and college courses in composition, literature, language arts, film, media studies and related fields (Modern Language Association, n.d.-b).
Secondary schools
The MLA writes for school classrooms directly. Its teaching resources include a lesson plan by Shipe (2019) for grades 9 to 12 on working quotations into research writing. In our view, a school English essay with no named style should default to MLA. The teacher's word still settles it; a first paper is walked through in How to cite sources in your first research paper.
University departments
English departments often set a style themselves. The University of Saskatchewan Department of English (2025) requires MLA in its English courses and bases its 2025–26 essay handbook on the ninth edition. The University of York Department of English and Related Literature (n.d.) accepts either Chicago or MLA. So even in literature, MLA is not the only answer: the Chicago Manual says many in the humanities, literature included, prefer its notes and bibliography system.
When is MLA the wrong choice?
MLA is the wrong choice, in our view, when the reader needs the date of each finding, when the field numbers its references, when the sources call for footnotes, and whenever the marker or publisher has named another style.
An empirical or scientific paper
In a psychology study or a lab report, the age of a finding is part of the argument: a reader weighs a result from 1985 differently from one published in 2024. APA 7 and Harvard put the year beside the name in every citation, and that weight on the date is the reason the Chicago Manual gives for scientists preferring author-date. See APA 7 in-text citations and the Harvard referencing guide.
Engineering and medicine
Engineering and computing commonly use IEEE, and medicine and the health sciences Vancouver. Both number sources in the order first cited, so a sentence resting on five sources carries five short numbers, not five names. See the IEEE referencing guide and the Vancouver referencing guide.
History from archives
A history essay built on letters and manuscripts is, in our view, better served by footnotes, which means Chicago notes and bibliography. The Chicago Manual calls it the older of its two systems and the one better able to hold unusual sources. EdCitation does not build notes and bibliography: it offers Chicago 18 author-date only, set out in the Chicago author-date guide.
When someone else names the style
The brief, the handbook, the department or the journal beats every argument on this page. The Chicago Manual itself tells students to check with their instructor before choosing a system. If a psychology module asks for MLA, use MLA.
Which style suits which kind of work?
This is our view of the usual fit when nobody has named a style.
| Kind of work | Style that suits it | Why | Does EdCitation build it? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Close reading of a novel, poem or play | MLA 9 | Page or line leads to the passage | Yes |
| Language, culture, film or media study | MLA 9 | One template cites a film, song or post | Yes |
| School English essay | MLA 9, unless the teacher names another | The MLA writes for school classes | Yes |
| Psychology, education, social science | APA 7 | The year shows how current a finding is | Yes |
| UK or Australian university essay or report | Harvard, the university's version | Author-date, set by many universities | Yes (Cite Them Right) |
| Engineering or computing | IEEE | Numbered in order of first citation | Yes |
| Medicine or health science | Vancouver | Numbered, as the NLM sets out | Yes |
| History from archives, with footnotes | Chicago notes and bibliography | Footnotes hold unusual sources | No, author-date only |
EdCitation offers six styles, APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago 18 author-date, Harvard, IEEE and Vancouver, and no others.
How do I decide which style to use, step by step?
Stop at the first step that gives an answer.
- Read the brief, the module handbook and the department's guide. If one names a style, use it. Check your paper reads a brief into a checklist, style included.
- Writing for a journal? Its instructions for authors name the style.
- Nothing written down? Ask your teacher or tutor.
- If you quote and analyse the words of texts, use MLA.
- If you report findings whose date matters, use APA, or Harvard where your university uses it.
- If your field numbers its references, use IEEE in engineering and Vancouver in medicine.
- If your sources are archives and your field expects footnotes, use Chicago notes and bibliography.
- Keep one style from the first citation to the last entry.
What changed in MLA 9 that students notice?
Less than most expect. The ninth edition, published in April 2021, keeps the system the eighth set up. The comparison chart from the Modern Language Association (2021a) puts the changes mainly in coverage:
- 333 sample citations in the text plus an appendix of over 200 more, against 164 in the eighth edition.
- New formatting advice on group projects, title pages and lists.
- New plagiarism advice on common knowledge, passing mentions, allusions and epigraphs.
- New sections on inclusive language, annotated bibliographies and notes.
The older change that still catches students
The bigger shift was the eighth edition's, and old guides online still show what it replaced. Modern Language Association (n.d.-d) lists it: no city of publication for most books, "vol. 64, no. 1" for "64.1", the first author and "et al." from three authors on, placeholders such as "n.d." dropped, and the medium no longer stated. A guide whose entries end in "Print" or "Web" follows an edition older than the eighth.
How does EdCitation help with an MLA paper?
Cite a source is the best tool for building MLA 9 entries, because an MLA entry is made of facts the MLA calls common to most sources, such as author, title and date, and Cite a source takes those facts from the publisher's record instead of writing them. From a DOI, an ISBN, a PubMed ID or a title it finds the published work, builds the entry in MLA 9 or any of five other styles, and screens it for retraction. A web page has no publisher's record, so from a web address it reads the details off the page for you to check. It is free, with no account, and it never writes a reference.
The page number in each MLA in-text citation is yours to add: it is not in the source's record. One lookup holds every style, so the style menu shows the same source in APA or IEEE without a new search, and with a free account a saved list can be re-set in another style from its Style menu. Verify references, also free, checks the finished list: each reference comes back verified, doubtful ("check this") or not found, retractions are flagged, and one that could not be checked is never shown as not found. The rules are on the MLA style page.
It does not choose your style, which is the brief's job, it does not format your pages, and it never writes any part of a paper. Mechanics QA, the Pro formatting check, checks against APA 7, not MLA.
Quick questions
Is MLA or APA better for an English essay?
MLA is the better fit for an English essay, in EdCitation's view, because it cites the page you quote and the argument rests on quoted passages. Use APA only if the teacher asks for it.
Should I use MLA for a history essay?
Use the style your history department names. In EdCitation's view, a history essay built on archives is better in Chicago notes and bibliography, with footnotes, which EdCitation does not build.
Can I use MLA for a science paper?
In EdCitation's view, only if the course asks for it. Otherwise a science paper is better in APA, Harvard, IEEE or Vancouver, which show each source's year or number in the text.
Does MLA 9 put the year in an in-text citation?
No. An MLA 9 in-text citation gives the author and, where the source has one, the page, as in (Baron 194). The year goes in the Works Cited entry.
