EdCitation publishes this comparison, and the plain answer to "are Grammarly citations accurate" is that Grammarly formats what it is given, so a citation is as accurate as what went in. For the reference itself and for the finished list, EdCitation is the best tool. Its Cite a source takes the reference from the publisher's record and screens it for retraction; its Verify references puts a whole pasted list or uploaded paper through the same record, flags what was retracted, keeps "could not check" distinct from "not found" and ties each in-text citation to its entry. Both cost nothing and need no account. Grammarly's free citation generator is a form. In EdCitation's test on 23 September 2026, the DOI 10.1038/s41598-023-41032-5 typed into its DOI field produced a preview holding nothing but the DOI, and a web address typed into its Website form produced "(n.d.)." and the address (Grammarly, n.d.-a). Every fact about Grammarly below was read on its own pages, checked on 23 September 2026, prices as the pages show them.
Where Grammarly is the better tool, in a sentence: the writing assistant itself, the browser extension that works inside the pages you write on and read, and the Citation Finder agent that suggests sources as you write; EdCitation never writes or rewrites any part of a paper and has no grammar checker.
What does each tool do?
Grammarly is a writing assistant with citation tools beside it; EdCitation is a lookup, a verifier and a check against the brief. Job by job:
| Job | Grammarly | EdCitation |
|---|---|---|
| A reference from a DOI or an ISBN | A form; the DOI is a field to fill, not a lookup | From the record, retraction screened, free, no account |
| A reference from a web page | A form, or a "Get citation" button on twenty listed sites | From the address, free, no account |
| Styles | APA, MLA and Chicago, no edition named | Six: APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago 18 author-date, Harvard, IEEE, Vancouver |
| Whether each reference exists | Nothing on its pages | Three verdicts: verified, "check this", not found |
| Retractions | Nothing on its pages | Flagged when cited and again in the finished list |
| In-text citations against the list | "Keep your citations consistent", Pro, $12 a month | Free, once the paper is uploaded |
| Plagiarism check | Inside Pro, $12 a month | Inside Pro, $8 a month, paid in credits |
| AI detector | Free on its own page; under Pro on the plans page | Inside Pro, $8 a month, paid in credits |
| The paper against its assignment | Not on the pages we read | Checklist free; the full judgement with Max, $24 a month |
Where is EdCitation the better tool?
For three jobs: the reference, the finished list and the paper against its brief. The reason is one: EdCitation looks a reference up and never writes one, and a form that formats whatever it is given cannot make that check.
The reference before it is cited
Give Cite a source a DOI, a title, a PubMed ID or an ISBN and it returns the reference in any of six styles, APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago 18 author-date, Harvard in its Cite Them Right form, IEEE or Vancouver, after checking the source against the Retraction Watch database. There is no charge and no account. Grammarly's generator page names APA, MLA and Chicago without an edition; its 2022 announcement says they follow "the latest editions" (Grammarly, 2022). Three styles to six, and no lookup.
The finished list, every entry
A pasted list, or the uploaded paper, goes into Verify references, which looks each entry up by DOI or, without one, by title, year and first author, and returns it verified, doubtful (shown as "check this") or not found. Retracted papers are flagged; an index that gave no answer is reported as "could not check", never as "not found". With the whole paper uploaded, the in-text citations are matched to the entries and the entries back to the text. No model reads the paper, nothing is kept, and there is no charge and no account. Grammarly's nearest row on its plans page is "Keep your citations consistent", under Pro and not Free (Grammarly, n.d.-f); the 2022 post calls it citation style formatting, which "does the proofreading for you" (Grammarly, 2022): the formatting half of the job, without the lookup.
The paper against its own brief
Paste the assignment's instructions into Check your paper, free, and they come back as a checklist of word limits, required sections, style and the number of sources. Theoretics QA, on Max at $24 a month, then judges the paper against that list, with quotations from the paper as its evidence, and rewrites nothing. Nothing on the Grammarly pages we read does this job. EdCitation's tools were not run for this article; their pages are the source for what they do.
What did Grammarly's citation generator do with a DOI and a web page?
It formatted the DOI and the address and nothing else, because nothing else was typed, and it ran with no account. The page calls the tool "built by writing experts and powered by AI" (Grammarly, n.d.-a); the support article says "You'll need to enter the information about your source" (Grammarly, n.d.-b).
The DOI
With Journal Article as the source, the form required a contributor's first and last name, the year, the title, the journal and the DOI, and offered a middle initial, a suffix, the volume, the issue, the pages and a URL. We typed 10.1038/s41598-023-41032-5 into the DOI field and waited. The "APA Full Citation Preview" showed one thing: https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-023-41032-5. The author, year, title and journal fields stayed empty. A DOI resolves to a publisher's record holding every element the form asks for; Cite a source reads the reference from that record.
The web page
With Website as the source, the form required the title, the website name and the URL, and offered contributor names, an organisation, a publishing date and a date accessed. We typed the address of the APA Style page on journal article references into the URL field. The preview showed "(n.d.)." and the address; the title, website name and date fields stayed empty. The page was not read; how to cite a website in APA 7 is the rule for finding each element yourself.
How do Grammarly's auto-citations and Citation Finder find a source?
Auto-citations read the page you are on, on a fixed list of sites, and Citation Finder suggests sources inside a Grammarly document; neither page says a source is checked for existence or retraction.
Auto-citations: a button on twenty journal sites
On "a compatible source website" a "Get citation" button appears in the lower-left corner of the screen, and clicking it gives a full citation and an in-text citation in APA, MLA or Chicago (Grammarly, n.d.-b). The feature needs the browser extension. The support page's list holds twenty address patterns, among them PLOS ONE, ScienceDirect, SAGE Journals, PubMed Central, arXiv, Wiley and Nature. The 2022 announcement listed ten sites, "the ten most popular source websites", with Wikipedia among them (Grammarly, 2022); Wikipedia is not on the support page's list today. Neither page says what the button reads, the page's own metadata or a register such as Crossref.
Citation Finder: sources suggested as you write
Citation Finder is described as an agent that "recommends trusted sources and formats citations instantly", in MLA, APA or Chicago (Grammarly, n.d.-c). The page does not say where the sources come from, what makes one trusted, or whether a suggested source is checked to exist. Grammarly's two pages disagree on who gets it: the feature page's FAQ says Free users can view and insert up to five citations a day, the user guide says the agent is available in docs for Pro and Plus subscribers (Grammarly, n.d.-c, n.d.-d). We did not run it, and this article claims nothing about what it suggests. Find sources is EdCitation's answer to the same need: about 300 million published works, searched by topic or by the claim a sentence needs to support.
How do Grammarly's plagiarism checker and AI detector compare with EdCitation's checks?
Grammarly puts both inside Pro at $12 a month and offers an AI check free on its website; EdCitation runs both on credits inside Pro at $8 a month. Grammarly's accuracy figure is its own, not from a peer-reviewed test; EdCitation states none; both say the result is not proof.
Prices and claims, as the pages show them
The plans page shows Free at $0 and Pro at $12 USD a month; "Catch accidental plagiarism" and "Detect AI generated text" are ticked under Pro and Enterprise, not Free (Grammarly, n.d.-f). No annual price was shown on the page we read. The plagiarism checker compares a text with "over 16 billion web pages and academic papers in ProQuest's databases" (Grammarly, n.d.-g); how plagiarism checkers work read the same page on 22 September 2026 and explains what a similarity score counts.
The AI detector page is headed "Free AI Detector" and says the tool "Achieves 99% detection accuracy and ranks #1 on RAID's independent benchmark" (Grammarly, n.d.-e). That is Grammarly's own figure on a benchmark it names; we did not check it against the benchmark's published results, and the same page's FAQ says "No AI detector is 100% accurate" and that none can "conclusively or definitively determine whether AI was used". The plans page lists AI detection under Pro and the detector page calls itself free; the pages do not say how the two differ.
On EdCitation's side, Check plagiarism marks each passage that matches published or web text and names the source of the match; Check AI labels every passage AI-written, AI-assisted or human and shows the score behind the label. Each belongs to Pro at $8 a month and is paid in credits, 240 a month on Pro and 720 on Max, with more from $10. The credits a check will use appear before it runs, a failed check uses none, and only the person who ran it sees the report. EdCitation says plainly that neither result is proof. The pricing page has the detail.
What the published tests say
One peer-reviewed test includes a Grammarly product. Dilber and Yoşumaz (2026) took ten English-language manuscripts published in 2023 and 2024, translated them into Spanish, Portuguese and French, and ran originals and translations through Turnitin, iThenticate and Grammarly. Their abstract reports the tools were "largely ineffective" on the translations and that Grammarly "has limited detection capabilities, even for English originals". The full text was not open to us, so the score for each tool could not be read.
The two larger tests do not include Grammarly. Weber-Wulff et al. (2023) tested 12 publicly available detectors of AI-generated text and two commercial systems, Turnitin and PlagiarismCheck, and concluded the tools are "neither accurate nor reliable"; no Grammarly product is among the 14 or named in the paper. Foltýnek et al. (2020) tested 15 text-matching systems in eight languages, Turnitin, Urkund and PlagScan among them; Grammarly is not one of the 15 and is not named. EdCitation makes no accuracy claim for its own checks for the same reason.
What does Grammarly do that EdCitation does not?
Most of what Grammarly is, because EdCitation never writes or rewrites any part of a paper.
- The writing assistant. Spelling, grammar, tone and, on Pro, full-sentence rewrites (Grammarly, n.d.-f). EdCitation has no grammar checker.
- Citations where you read and write. The "Get citation" button on the twenty listed sites, and Citation Finder inside a document.
- Generative AI. 100 prompts a month on Free, 2,000 per member on Pro (Grammarly, n.d.-f).
How do I use Grammarly and EdCitation together?
Write with Grammarly if you like it, and put every reference through a lookup before anyone marks it.
- Start each reference from its identifier in Cite a source and read it once against the style's own page. Grammarly's form will format the same details, but only if you type every one.
- Open any source the extension's button or Citation Finder handed you, and check its author, date and title against the page itself.
- Upload the finished paper to Verify references before it goes in. Rebuild whatever reads "check this" and replace whatever is not found; how to check a reference is real is the check by hand.
- Put the brief through Check your paper.
- Find out what a plagiarism or AI check costs before running one. Grammarly's sit inside Pro at $12 a month; EdCitation shows the credits first.
Quick questions
Are Grammarly's citations accurate?
They are as accurate as what goes in. The free generator formats the details you type; in EdCitation's test on 23 September 2026 a DOI alone produced a preview holding only the DOI, and Grammarly's pages do not say a source is checked to exist.
Which websites do Grammarly's auto-citations work on?
Twenty address patterns listed on Grammarly's support page, including PLOS ONE, ScienceDirect, SAGE Journals, PubMed Central, arXiv, Wiley and Nature, with the browser extension installed. Wikipedia was on the 2022 list and is not on the current one.
How accurate is Grammarly's AI detector?
Grammarly's page states 99% detection accuracy and first place on the RAID benchmark; that is the vendor's figure, and its own FAQ says no detector is 100% accurate. Weber-Wulff et al. (2023) tested 14 detectors and Grammarly's was not among them.
Can EdCitation replace Grammarly?
Not for writing: EdCitation has no grammar checker, no rewrites and no extension. What it does instead is take a reference from the publisher's record, verify a whole list with retractions flagged, and check a paper against its own assignment, free with no account.
