To become a social worker in England, you qualify on a course approved by Social Work England and then join its register; in the US, you graduate from a CSWE-accredited programme and are licensed by your state's board. "Social worker" is a protected title in England, so there is no way round either step (Social Work England, n.d.-a). This guide, published by EdCitation, takes every requirement, figure and date from the regulators, GOV.UK, the programme providers and official statistics, read in September 2026. Nothing here promises a place, a bursary, registration, a licence, a job or a salary.
Social Work England's site stopped us at a bot check, so its pages were read in dated archived copies; check the live pages before you apply.
Social work students write evidence-informed essays and case analyses from the first term. Two free EdCitation tools help from the first week: Find sources covers about 300 million published works, and Cite a source turns each into a reference drawn from its record. Neither writes a word of your work or your application; the evidence is found for you, and the argument stays yours.
What does it take to become a social worker in England?
It takes an approved qualification in social work, at degree level or above, and an entry on Social Work England's register. For child and family social work, the Department for Education (2025b) puts it plainly: a level 6 degree or a level 7 postgraduate qualification in social work, then registration.
What every approved course includes
Social Work England's education and training standards make an honours degree in social work the normal entry route. Students spend at least 200 days learning in practice, of which up to 30 may be skills days, with placements in at least two contrasting settings and at least one in a statutory setting such as a council's children's or adult services (Social Work England, 2021). Admissions check English, conduct, health and character, including criminal convictions, and involve people with lived experience of social work.
Checks before you start
On every route you need the right to work and claim public funds in the UK and an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check against both barred lists; some placements need a driving licence (Department for Education, 2025b).
Which route into social work suits you?
A degree suits most school leavers, a master's or a funded programme suits graduates, and an apprenticeship suits people already in social care work. Every route qualifies you for both adult and children's social work (Department for Education, 2025b).
| Route | Country | How long, as the source states it | Who pays | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Undergraduate degree (level 6) | England | 3 years; part-time available | The student; bursary possible from year 2 | DfE; NHSBSA |
| Master's or PgDip (level 7) | England | 2 years; part-time available | The student; bursary and fee contribution possible | DfE; NHSBSA |
| Degree apprenticeship (level 6) | England | 3 years | The employer; no tuition fees | DfE; Skills England |
| Step Up to Social Work (PgDip) | England | 14 months, full time | Fully funded; £21,995 bursary | GOV.UK |
| Approach Social Work (formerly Frontline) | England | Up to 3 years, full time | Fully funded; bursary, then salary | DfE; Frontline |
| Social work degree | Wales | 3 years, or 2 years for postgraduates | The student; Welsh bursary if nominated | Social Care Wales |
| Degree in Social Work | Northern Ireland | 3 years, or 2 for relevant graduates | Not stated on the page we read | NISCC |
| BSW, then MSW | United States | 4 years, then 2 years (1 with advanced standing at some schools) | The student | CSWE |
| Your first case analysis | Anywhere | As long as the reading takes | Free | Find sources and Cite a source |
Graduates in other subjects can take a two-year master's or postgraduate diploma instead of a second degree. Social Work England's list of approved courses shows which count.
The social work apprenticeship
A social worker degree apprenticeship combines paid work with study for an approved degree, with no tuition fees. The Skills England (2026) standard, ST0510, gave a typical duration of 36 months in version 1.1; the page for version 2.0, for starts from 25 March 2026, did not show one.
Step Up to Social Work
Step Up to Social Work is a 14-month, full-time postgraduate diploma in child and family social work, with around 170 placement days in a local authority. Applicants need a 2:2 degree in another subject, six months' full-time experience with vulnerable people, and GCSE English at grade 4 (C). There are no fees and a tax-free bursary of £21,995. The Department for Education (2025a) takes applications every two years; the 2026 round is closed.
Approach Social Work, formerly Frontline
Frontline's programme has been called Approach Social Work since June 2024. It pays a tax-free bursary of £18,000, or £20,000 in London, in year one, then two years employed by a local authority, ending in a master's with Lancaster University (Frontline, n.d.-b). Applicants need a 2:2 honours degree, GCSE English Language at grade 4 (C), the right to work in the UK until September 2030 and residence in England by July 2027 (Frontline, n.d.-a). Applications were closed when we checked.
What happened to Think Ahead?
Think Ahead trained mental health social workers, but Think Ahead (2025) said government funding would not continue for 2026 or later cohorts. For adult or mental health work, take a degree, a master's or an apprenticeship.
How is social work training funded in England?
The Social Work Bursary is a grant for students who normally live in England, on an approved university course. Places are capped and universities nominate students, so NHS Business Services Authority (2026) warns that a place on a course does not guarantee one. The 2026/27 figures:
- Undergraduates, from year 2 only: £4,862.50 a year, or £5,262.50 at a London university, including a £862.50 Placement Travel Allowance. No tuition fee support.
- Postgraduates, from year 1: £3,362.50 a year, or £3,762.50 in London, an income-assessed grant of up to £2,721, or £4,201 in London, and up to £4,052 towards fees. No postgraduate loan alongside.
- Everyone eligible but not nominated can still receive the £862.50 travel allowance.
- Not eligible: registered social workers, and students whose employer pays fees or study time.
For courses starting from September to December 2026, apply by 31 October 2026.
How do you register with Social Work England?
You apply yourself once your university has sent Social Work England its pass list, usually about five working days after results. You must not practise until registered. You have five years from qualifying to register; after that, you must update your skills first (Social Work England, n.d.-a).
What registration costs, and what keeps it
The fee for initial registration and for each year's renewal is £120 for the registration year from 1 December 2025 to 30 November 2026, and £122 for 2026 to 2027 (Social Work England, 2025). Renewal is due by 30 November each year, and each year you must record at least two pieces of continuing professional development, one of them with a peer reflection (Social Work England, n.d.-b).
What is the ASYE?
The Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE) is a 12-month, employer-led programme of support and assessment for newly qualified social workers. Skills for Care (n.d.) runs it for adult and mental health services; the child and family ASYE is run by the Department for Education. That is changing: from September 2027 a two-year early career programme will replace the ASYE for child and family social workers, built on early career standards in use from 1 April 2027 (Department for Education, 2026).
How do you become a social worker in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland?
Each nation has its own regulator, and you register with the one where you work.
- Wales. You register with Social Care Wales as a student before your course starts, and again as a social worker once qualified and in post (Social Care Wales, 2026b). For 2026/27 its bursary, which a Welsh university nominates students for, is £3,750 a year for undergraduates and £12,715 a year for master's students, who on the courses it lists are expected to pay their tuition fees from it (Social Care Wales, 2026a).
- Northern Ireland. The Degree in Social Work takes three years, or two for relevant graduates, and students and social workers are registered by the Northern Ireland Social Care Council (n.d.).
- Scotland. The Scottish Social Services Council registers social workers there, but its site asked for a browser check we could not pass, and we have not described its rules.
How do you become a social worker in the US?
In the US you earn a degree from a CSWE-accredited programme, apply to your state's board, pass the ASWB exam it requires and, for clinical practice, complete supervised experience. The Council on Social Work Education (n.d.) notes that most states require an accredited degree.
BSW and MSW
A BSW is a four-year bachelor's degree. The Council on Social Work Education (2026) describes the MSW as a two-year, 60-credit degree that most students enter from other subjects; a subset of BSW graduates gain advanced standing and finish sooner.
Licences and the ASWB exams
The Association of Social Work Boards (n.d.-b) lists four licence categories: bachelors, masters, advanced generalist and clinical, the last two needing supervised practice after an MSW. Each exam has 122 questions, 110 scored, in four hours, and costs US$230, or US$260 for advanced generalist and clinical (Association of Social Work Boards, n.d.-a).
Two state boards
- California (LCSW). An MSW from an accredited school, registration as an Associate Clinical Social Worker, 3,000 supervised hours over at least 104 weeks, the California Law and Ethics Exam, then the ASWB Clinical exam (California Board of Behavioral Sciences, n.d.).
- New York (LCSW). An MSW with at least 12 semester hours of clinical coursework, usually an LMSW licence first, then at least three years of supervised post-MSW experience with at least 100 hours of clinical supervision, and the ASWB Clinical exam (New York State Education Department, n.d.).
Pay in the US
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (2026) gives a median annual wage for social workers of $61,780 in 2025, and projects 6% growth in jobs from 2025 to 2035. A median is not an offer.
A timeline from school to your first social work post
We drew up this timeline at EdCitation for a student in England starting a social work degree in September 2027; its rules come from the sources above.
- Two years before: secure GCSE English at grade 4 (C) and check each university's requirements.
- The year before: work or volunteer with people who need support; Step Up asks graduates for six months of it.
- Application year: apply through UCAS with a personal statement you wrote yourself.
- Before you start: pass the enhanced DBS check and the university's checks on health and character.
- Year one: first essays; search with Find sources and build references with Cite a source.
- Year two: apply for the Social Work Bursary before its autumn deadline.
- Across the course: at least 200 practice days in two contrasting settings, one of them statutory.
- Results: once your university sends its pass list, apply to Social Work England and pay the fee.
- First post: your ASYE, or from September 2027 the two-year programme in children's statutory work.
- Every year after: two pieces of CPD, one with a peer reflection, by 30 November.
How does EdCitation help social work students with essays and case analyses?
EdCitation is the best tool for building the evidence behind a social work essay: every source it returns is a published record, and every reference is looked up rather than written, which no chatbot can guarantee. Social Work England counts research, theories and frameworks in each social worker's yearly CPD, so the habit starts here.
A search on a social work topic
We ran Find sources on 27 September 2026 for "social work child protection decision making". It answered from OpenAlex with a total of 462,984 records. The first result was "Implementing Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child in Child Protection Decision-Making: a Critical Analysis of the Challenges and Opportunities for Social Work" by Paul McCafferty, Child Care in Practice, 2017, cited 60 times. Its DOI went into Cite a source, which returned in Harvard (Cite Them Right):

(2017) ‘Implementing Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child in Child Protection Decision-Making: a Critical Analysis of the Challenges and Opportunities for Social Work’, Child Care in Practice, 23(4), pp. 327–341. Which style will your social work course use?
Harvard at the three UK schools we read, APA at the two US schools. Harvard is the style for Social Work at Teesside University (Teesside University Library, 2026), for Social Policy and Social Work at York (University of York Library, n.d.), and for Royal Holloway's department (Royal Holloway, University of London, 2026). UNC's School of Social Work expects graduate students to use APA style and points them to the 7th edition (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Social Work, n.d.), and Lehman College's library guides social work students through APA 7th (Lehman College Library, 2026). Harvard varies between universities, so your handbook wins. Cite a source offers Harvard and APA 7 among its six styles and checks each source for a retraction; Verify references checks a finished list, free with no account. Citing legislation and codes of ethics is in social work and sociology books, the assignment's shape in how to write a case study, and nursing's route in how to become a nurse in the UK.
Quick questions
How long does it take to become a social worker in the UK?
In England, three years on a degree or apprenticeship, two on a master's, 14 months on Step Up to Social Work and up to three on Approach Social Work.
Can you become a social worker without a degree?
No. England requires a level 6 degree or level 7 postgraduate qualification in social work. A degree apprenticeship earns that degree while you are paid, with no tuition fees.
What is the difference between an MSW and an LCSW?
An MSW is a master's degree in social work. An LCSW is a state licence for clinical practice, which in California and New York also needs supervised experience and the ASWB Clinical exam.
Do social work students get paid in England?
Apprentices earn a wage, Approach Social Work pays a salary from year two, Step Up pays a £21,995 bursary, and degree students may get the capped Social Work Bursary.
Can EdCitation write my social work essays or application?
No. EdCitation is built to find the published evidence with Find sources and to format each reference from its record; the analysis, the reflection and the application are written by you.
