A personal statement explains, in your own words, why you want the course and what has prepared you for it. How to write a personal statement depends on who asks for it: UCAS now sets three questions, the Common App offers seven prompts, and graduate schools ask for a statement of purpose, a personal statement or both. This guide, published by EdCitation, takes every requirement from the admissions pages of UCAS, the Common App, UC Berkeley, Cornell, Oxford and Cambridge, read in late September 2026. No statement guarantees an offer, and nothing here promises one.
Start with the instructions. EdCitation's free Check your paper reads a programme's requirements (the word limit, the formatting, what to include) into a checklist, each item shown with the sentence it came from. It reads the instructions only: EdCitation never writes, rewrites or edits any part of a personal statement, because every admissions page below wants your voice.
What is the difference between a personal statement and a statement of purpose?
A statement of purpose is mainly academic and a personal statement is mainly about you, though the line blurs. Oxford says a statement of purpose is likely to centre on research interests, academic background and career aims, and a personal statement on how motivations, experiences and values brought you to the course, adding that elements of one often appear in the other (University of Oxford, n.d.-a).
Some universities ask for both. UC Berkeley requires a Statement of Purpose and a Personal History Statement, and says the second "should not duplicate" the first (University of California, Berkeley, Graduate Division, n.d.). Cornell calls its version an academic statement of purpose and describes it as academically focused, "not necessarily a personal essay" (Cornell University Graduate School, n.d.). In UK undergraduate admissions, "personal statement" means the UCAS one.
Personal statement requirements compared
Each application sets its own length, format and questions, as its admissions page states.
| Application | Length and format | What it asks | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| UCAS, UK undergraduate, 2026 entry onwards | 4,000 characters including spaces, in three boxes; at least 350 characters in each | Three set questions: why this subject, how your studies prepared you, what else you have done | UCAS (n.d.-c) |
| Common App, US first-year | Word limit for the personal essay not stated on the public pages we read; Additional information 300 words at most | One of seven prompts; each college requires the essay or makes it optional | Common App (2025a, 2025b, 2026) |
| UC Berkeley, graduate | Two statements; about 500 to 1,000 words suggested unless the programme says otherwise | Aptitude, motivation, preparation, research interests, career goals, why Berkeley; plus a Personal History Statement | UC Berkeley Graduate Division |
| Cornell, graduate | One to two pages in a standard font and size is typical; name and programme on every page | Academic interests, preparation and research, informed choice of programme, faculty you would work with | Cornell Graduate School |
| Oxford, graduate | Set on each course page; a statement significantly over the limit is removed | Personal statement or statement of purpose, as the course page says | University of Oxford |
| Cambridge, postgraduate | Character or word limit shown in the Applicant Portal | Reasons for applying, experience and achievements, career aspirations | University of Cambridge |
| Your own programme | Whatever its instructions state | Whatever its instructions state | Read into a checklist by EdCitation's Check your paper, free |
What could not be confirmed
The Common App's public help pages we could open did not state the personal essay's own word count; that limit is shown inside the application's Writing section, behind a sign-in. The widely repeated figure of 650 words is therefore not given here as fact: check it in your account. UCAS's current pages give the limit in characters only; we found no line limit stated on them.
How to write a UCAS personal statement for 2026 entry onwards
Answer three compulsory questions within 4,000 characters in total. UCAS announced the change on 18 July 2024, replacing the single free-text box, and said it would start in September 2025 for students applying for 2026 entry (UCAS, 2024).
The three questions
UCAS's current guidance gives the questions as:
- Why do you want to study this course or subject?
- How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare for this course or subject?
- What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?
The July 2024 announcement ended the third question with "helpful"; UCAS's later pages say "useful" (UCAS, n.d.-d). Answer the wording in your application.
How the character limit works
Each answer needs at least 350 characters, and you split the rest as your course and experience require. The total of 4,000 characters includes spaces and, UCAS says, keeps statements the same length as before (UCAS, 2024); what you are expected to cover is "mostly unchanged" (UCAS, n.d.-d).
What UCAS says to put in and leave out
- Question 1: your motivation, what you know of the subject, super-curricular reading or tasters, and where the course leads.
- Question 2: skills from your studies, specific modules, projects such as the EPQ, and competitions. Your grades appear elsewhere in the application, so do not spend characters on them.
- Question 3: work experience, volunteering, caring responsibilities, activities and achievements, each with a reflection on why it matters for the course. If you have left full-time education, say what you have done since.
- Read as one. Admissions staff review the three answers together, so do not repeat yourself, and there is no wrong box for a piece of evidence (UCAS, n.d.-c).
How to write a US college essay for the Common App
Choose one of seven prompts and write the essay only you could write. The Common App announced on 27 February 2026 that the prompts stay the same for 2026–2027 (Common App, 2026). They cover a background, identity, interest or talent; a challenge, setback or failure; questioning a belief; unexpected gratitude; personal growth; a topic that makes you lose track of time; and a topic of your choice, which may be an essay you have already written.
In 2025–2026, according to the same announcement, 28% of students chose the topic of their choice and 23% facing adversity. Those are choices, not outcomes.
The Common App's help centre adds three points. Each college either requires the personal essay or leaves it optional, and you may send it where it is optional; after your first submission, you may edit it without limit (Common App, 2025b). Colleges' own questions carry their own word counts, and the system warns you when you exceed one or fall short (Common App, 2023). The Additional information question dropped from 650 words to 300 for 2025–26, and the Challenges and circumstances question kept its 250 (Common App, 2025a).
How to write a personal statement for masters and PhD applications
Say what you want to study, what has prepared you, and why this programme, at the length the programme sets. Four universities' pages agree on that core and differ on detail.
UC Berkeley: four parts, two statements
Berkeley's prompt asks for your aptitude and motivation for graduate study, your preparation, academic plans or research interests, career goals, and why Berkeley fits. It suggests four parts: introduce yourself and your interests; summarise your earlier studies; show the relevance of what you are doing now; and set out your academic interests. It advises showing rather than claiming (demonstrate persistence, do not just call yourself persistent), writing in the active voice, and aiming for roughly 500 to 1,000 words unless the programme says otherwise (University of California, Berkeley, Graduate Division, n.d.).
Cornell: evidence and an informed choice
Cornell asks for research you have done (the project, your mentor, your role, what you learned), papers or a thesis, and evidence that you know the programme, its faculty and its research. Research degree applicants should name faculty whose interests match theirs, and some programmes require it. One to two pages is typical, with your full name and programme at the top of each page in case pages are separated (Cornell University Graduate School, n.d.).
Oxford and Cambridge: the course page decides
Oxford sets the length and assessment criteria on each course page. A statement that significantly exceeds the permitted length is removed and the application treated as incomplete, and departments may screen a statement of purpose with plagiarism-detection software (University of Oxford, n.d.-a). Cambridge asks you to check the limit in its Applicant Portal and to include in the statement any personal circumstances you want considered, because an unsuccessful applicant cannot appeal on them later (University of Cambridge, n.d.-a). A PhD applicant may also need a research proposal: see how to write a research proposal.
Can I use AI to write my personal statement?
Not to write it, under any of the five policies below; Berkeley's statements page does not address AI. They differ on smaller uses, and the strictest rule that applies to you wins. Each is quoted exactly.
- UCAS: generating and submitting "all or a large part" of a statement from an AI tool as your own words "could be considered cheating"; its Verification Team checks statements for "patterns of similarity" (UCAS, n.d.-a, n.d.-b). UCAS suggests AI for ideas, structure and readability checks, and tells you to check every fact it gives.
- Common App: its fraud policy covers presenting as your own "the substantive content or output of an artificial intelligence platform, technology, or algorithm" (Common App, n.d.).
- Cornell (updated 1 September 2026): brainstorming and grammar tools are allowed, but "If you use any GenAI tool while preparing your application, even for a permitted purpose, you must disclose it" (Cornell University Graduate School, 2026). Cornell says it does not rely on AI-detection software as primary evidence.
- Oxford: AI may help research your application, "but the ideas and their expression must be yours"; formatting and spelling and grammar checks are allowed, and research use is declared in a footnote (University of Oxford, n.d.-b).
- Cambridge: "AI must not be used when writing personal statements and CVs", and "This prohibition covers the use of AI to help your use of English" (University of Cambridge, n.d.-b).
- Berkeley: the statements page we read does not address AI.
Where the rules disagree
A grammar checker that Cornell and Oxford permit is, on Cambridge's wording, off limits for a Cambridge personal statement. Cornell requires a written disclosure of any use; Oxford asks for a footnote only for research use. Oxford explicitly permits AI tools used to assist with a disability; Cambridge's page does not mention them, so ask its admissions office. For how to word a declaration, see should you disclose AI use, and how.
What mistakes do admissions pages warn against?
The same few mistakes recur across these pages:
- Going over the limit. At Oxford, a statement well over it is removed (University of Oxford, n.d.-a).
- Exaggerating. UCAS warns that an inflated achievement can catch you out at interview; Cambridge asks you to be honest about your achievements.
- Borrowed words. UCAS advises against quotations from others and clichés, and against copying; Oxford says your statement must be entirely your own work.
- Repeating yourself. UCAS reads the three answers as one; Cambridge says do not repeat information; Berkeley's two statements must not duplicate each other.
- Guessing what they want. Oxford says not to assume what it looks for; Cornell, to follow each programme's instructions.
- Leaving it late, and sharing it. UCAS warns that a rushed statement leaves things out, and says not to post your statement online or share it except with people you trust for feedback.
A planning template for your statement
This template is EdCitation's own. It is a plan, not a script: every sentence in the statement is yours.
- Collect the instructions from the course page and any departmental guidance. Paste them into EdCitation's Check your paper to get the limit and format as a checklist.
- Write down the questions. List each question or topic the instructions name, word for word, as headings in your notes.
- Gather evidence under each heading. For each: one or two specific experiences, what you did, and what you learned. Leave out grades already on the form.
- Answer "why this course" and "why here". Name the modules, research groups or faculty you have actually read about.
- Budget the length. Divide the limit across the headings (UCAS: at least 350 characters per answer within 4,000). Our guide to writing to a word count covers cutting.
- Draft in your own words, then check each claim is true and can be discussed at interview.
- Check against the checklist and each university's AI rule, add any disclosure the programme requires, and ask a teacher or supervisor for feedback.
How does Check your paper help with a personal statement?
It turns a programme's instructions into a checklist, and it is the best first step for a statement because it reads the requirements, quoting each sentence it relied on, and never touches what you write. Check your paper is free on EdCitation, with no account: paste the instructions or upload the file. It lists each rule (word limits for each part, required headings, the number and age of sources, the citation style, font, spacing and margins) beside the sentence it was read from.
What a test set of requirements returned
We wrote eight lines of requirements for a made-up MSc in Public Health (ours, not any university's) and pasted them in. The checklist returned six rules, each quoted with its source sentence: Font, "Times New Roman"; Font size, "12 pt"; Line spacing, "1 ×"; Margins, "0.98 in" (read from "2.5 cm margins"); Word count, "500 to 1,000 words"; Citation style, "APA 7".
It set aside, as things it asks you to do that no rule can test:
"Answer three questions: why you want to study this programme, how your studies and work have prepared you, and what you plan to do after graduating."
"Name at least one member of our faculty whose research interests you."
"Put your full name and the programme title at the top of each page."
"Disclose any use of AI tools at the end of the statement."
The questions are the heart of the statement, so copy a programme's questions into your plan yourself, as step 2 says.
EdCitation never writes, rewrites or edits a personal statement, and that is a strength: the checklist tells you what was asked, and the answer stays entirely yours, which is what every admissions page above requires. If your statement cites a published paper, Cite a source builds the reference from its DOI in APA 7 or five other styles.
Quick questions
How many characters is a UCAS personal statement?
A UCAS personal statement for 2026 entry onwards is 4,000 characters in total, including spaces, across three questions, with at least 350 characters in each answer.
What is the difference between a statement of purpose and a personal statement?
A statement of purpose focuses on your academic preparation, research interests and goals; a personal statement on the experiences and motivations behind your application. Oxford notes the two often overlap, and Berkeley asks for both.
How long should a personal statement for a master's be?
As long as the programme says. Berkeley suggests about 500 to 1,000 words unless told otherwise, Cornell one to two pages, and Oxford and Cambridge set limits on each course page or in the portal.
Can I use ChatGPT to write my personal statement?
None of the policies above lets AI write it. Cambridge bars AI from personal statements entirely, even for English; Cornell and Oxford allow limited help, and Cornell requires disclosure.
Can EdCitation check my personal statement's requirements?
Yes. EdCitation's free Check your paper reads the programme's instructions into a checklist of limits and formatting, each rule quoted from its sentence. It never writes or edits the statement.
