University reading lists: how to get through them

Nobody expects you to read a whole university reading list from top to bottom. Its labels tell you where to spend your time: essential or core items are for everyone, recommended items deepen a topic, and further or background items are there when an essay needs them.

Do I have to read everything on the reading list?

No. The University of Reading's time-management guide tells students they do not have time to read everything on the list, "nor are you expected to" (University of Reading, 2026). Read every essential item and choose among the rest. Other universities add nuance:

• Warwick says the list is not all the reading you are expected to do; it is a starting point (University of Warwick Library, 2026).
• Hull says the more widely you read across all three priority levels, the richer your knowledge and the stronger your arguments (University of Hull, 2026).
• York says that if you are unsure how much to read each week, ask your lecturer (University of York, 2026).

Reading and York describe the minimum; Warwick and Hull describe what a strong essay grows from. The working rule: essential items always, recommended items for the topics you will write on, further items only when an assignment or your own interest calls for them.

What do essential, recommended and further reading mean?

They are priority labels your lecturer attaches to each item, and the names vary by university.

The rows come from each library's student guide (University of York, 2026; University of Lincoln Library, 2026; University of Warwick Library, 2026; University of Nottingham Libraries, n.d.; University of Cambridge Libraries, 2026).

Where the definitions differ

Three differences catch students out:

• Recommended can mean essential. Warwick warns that some lists use "recommended" the way others use "essential". If a list has no essential items, treat recommended as the core.
• Further and background are the same tier. York and Hull say background; Lincoln, Warwick and Nottingham say further. York adds that not all its departments use the background tag.
• Core and essential are the same tier. Nottingham says core; the others say essential.

How many hours of reading does university expect?

No university page we read gives a figure for reading alone. They give hours of total study, which includes reading:

• Cambridge: at least 35 hours a week of independent study and contact time, sometimes much more (University of Cambridge, n.d.).
• Lincoln: at least 37 hours a week in term, with two to three hours of independent work for every hour in class (University of Lincoln, n.d.).
• Reading: 30 to 35 hours a week, including lectures, seminars, labs and independent study (University of Reading, 2026).
• Stanford: each unit of credit means about three hours of work a week, typically one in class and two for preparation or later "reading and study" (Stanford University, n.d.).

St Clair-Thompson et al. (2018) found undergraduates reported an average of 14.1 hours of reading a week, less than their university expected; we read only the abstract, which gives no sample size. Credits turned into hours are in time management for students.

How do students actually use reading lists?

Students read selectively, and many feel guilty about it. Two recent studies show how, each with limits worth knowing.

A survey across one semester in Georgia

Hovland et al. (2026) surveyed 287 students in 11 reading-heavy humanities and social science classes at the University of Georgia, three times in spring 2023, and kept 589 usable responses. Between 39% and 43% said they had read all of the past week's reading. The commonest reason for not reading was that it was not a priority (24% of responses); the second was a "more efficient alternative" (13%), mostly skimming. Most students who skimmed counted it as not reading; only two responses called it complete. The limits: answers were self-reported, students tend to overestimate their reading, as the authors note, and science courses may differ.

Group interviews at a UK university

Mason and Warmington (2024) interviewed 30 second-year social science undergraduates from ten disciplines at one UK research-intensive university, between October 2021 and April 2022. Reading came across as a struggle, a chore and, when its purpose was unclear, pointless. The students wanted lists with clear priorities and a reason for each text, and the authors advise lecturers that asking students to read less may get them to read more. The limits: one faculty, and pandemic years, as the authors acknowledge.

Students at Huddersfield asked for much the same: weekly sections and headings by importance (McGuinn et al., 2017). The lesson for a student: skimming is a technique, not a failure, as long as you choose it on purpose and for the right item.

How do you get through a reading list?

Work from the labels down, and read each item for a reason:

1. Filter the list by label. York, Warwick, Nottingham and Cambridge all let you filter by importance in the online list.
2. Read every essential item for the week. Warwick expects notes on these before the session.
3. Decide what each item is for before you open it, as Reading's guide advises.
4. Time it to the session. Reading suggests lecture reading may help more after the lecture, and seminar reading always before.
5. Skim first, then read closely only what earns it. For journal articles, use the passes in how to read an academic paper fast.
6. Split the further reading with classmates. Southampton's study group guide suggests that with eight papers, four people read two each and share the key points (University of Southampton Library, 2026).
7. Recall what you read. Close the book and write the main points from memory, as how to remember what you read explains.
8. Log each item you will use in an essay the day you read it: its ISBN or DOI goes into EdCitation's Cite a source.

Can you read faster for university?

Only a little, without losing understanding. Rayner et al. (2016) reviewed the research and found a trade-off between speed and accuracy: doubling or tripling speed with the same understanding is unlikely, though skimming gets through a text faster with moderate comprehension. Their route to faster reading is practice and a larger vocabulary. The time saved comes from choosing what to read closely.

Using the reading list system

University reading list systems do more than list books. Warwick runs Talis Aspire; King's College London and Cambridge run Leganto:

• Talis Aspire at Warwick: mark each item as will read, reading now, have read or won't read, and add private notes (University of Warwick Library, 2026). Nottingham's system offers the same reading intentions.
• Leganto at King's College London: tick an item as done, which your tutors cannot see, and save items to a private favourites list (King's College London Libraries & Collections, 2026).
• Leganto at Cambridge: export the list to Word as a bibliography in a referencing style.

Which reading gets which approach?

How do you get hold of set books without buying them all?

Check the library's copies and e-books first, and buy only what you will use most weeks:

• York: check availability or view online from the list, and place a request on a book out on loan.
• Warwick: most essential readings are online, opened from the list's View Online button; View Availability shows where print copies are.
• Cambridge: digitised chapters sit in the list itself.
• Hull: a suggest-a-purchase service for items the library lacks.
• Strathclyde: wait until classes start before buying, and if you buy second-hand, check the edition and condition first (University of Strathclyde, 2026).

Worked example: check the edition before you cite

Editions matter twice: the list's page numbers belong to one edition, and so does your reference. We ran the ISBN 9781350421271, Stella Cottrell's study skills handbook of 2024, through Cite a source on 27 September 2026. From the Open Library record it returned this APA 7 reference, with the title in italics and no retraction notice:

Cottrell, S. (2024). Study skills handbook. Bloomsbury Academic & Professional.

That record names neither the edition nor the leading "The". A bookseller's listing gives the title as The Study Skills Handbook and the edition as the sixth, published by Bloomsbury Academic on 19 September 2024 (Bear Pond Books, n.d.). So the entry to use, checked against the book's title page, is:

Cottrell, S. (2024). The study skills handbook (6th ed.). Bloomsbury Academic.

Pasted into Verify references, that entry came back verified: "Title, author and year match a library catalogue record." A reference is only as full as its record, so compare it with the title page, as you compare the edition with your list's.

A weekly reading plan (ours)

We put this plan together from the pages and studies above; nobody has tested it as a whole. It assumes three modules with weekly lists.

1. Start of the week, 20 minutes: filter each module's list to the week and mark its essential items as will read.
2. Before each seminar: read its essential items in full, with notes.
3. After each lecture, within a day: its essential items, then the recommended item nearest your next assignment.
4. Midweek, an hour: skim two recommended or further items on your assignment topic; read closely the one that earns it.
5. With your study group: split any long further reading and share key points, as Southampton suggests.
6. End of the week, 30 minutes: recall the main points from memory and mark what you finished as have read.
7. As you go: add each set book to My Books in EdCitation's Library and each reference you may use to a reference list.

If you fall behind, drop further reading first and keep essential reading, as the labels intend.

Quick questions

Do I have to read everything on my reading list?

No. Read every essential or core item and choose the rest by topic and assignment; the University of Reading tells students they are not expected to read everything on the list.

Essential vs further reading: what is the difference?

Essential reading is for every student on the module, usually before the session; further or background reading goes beyond it, for depth or an assignment. Some lists use "recommended" for the essential tier.

How many hours of reading should I do at university?
