Time management for students begins with a number few students look up: the hours their course expects. A full-time year in England is 1,200 notional hours, roughly 40 a week, and a US credit hour assumes two hours of work outside class for each hour in it. A weekly study plan is those hours, placed.
EdCitation publishes this guide. We read the credit rules, university pages and research below at source in September 2026. The weekly and term plans are ours; no study tested them, and no plan guarantees a grade. EdCitation's Check your paper reads an assignment brief into a checklist, free; we ran it on a brief of our own below.
Why self-testing and spacing work is in how to study effectively; exams are in how to revise for exams.
How many hours should I study a week?
You should expect about 40 hours a week in a full-time UK year, classes included, and at least 45 on a US load of 15 credit hours. Both figures come from the rules that define a credit, and both are averages.
In the UK: ten notional hours a credit
The Quality Assurance Agency's credit framework for England (2021) says one credit typically stands for 10 notional hours, counting classes, independent study and assessment: a 20-credit module is 200 hours. A full-time year is 120 credits, so 1,200 hours. Loughborough University's handbook spreads them over a 30-week year: 40 a week. The School of Computer Science at the University of St Andrews (2026) says the same, "around 40 hours per week", and puts a 15-credit module at about 10 hours a week for 14 weeks. Part-time, the Open University says 60 credits a year takes 16 to 18 hours a week, and advises no more than 60 alongside a full-time job.
In the US: the federal credit hour
Under 34 C.F.R. § 600.2, a credit hour reasonably approximates at least one hour of classroom instruction and two hours of out-of-class work each week, for about fifteen weeks. Three hours a week per credit, so 15 credits is 45 hours a week at the minimum. Carnegie Mellon's catalogue (2026) counts openly: one unit is one hour of work a week, three units make one semester credit hour, and 36 units is full time. MIT's faculty rules also make a unit about an hour a week.
Europe: ECTS
The European Commission's ECTS users' guide (2015) puts a full-time year at 60 credits and, in most cases, 1,500 to 1,800 hours: 25 to 30 hours a credit. It adds that individual students will take more or less.
| System | One unit stands for | A full-time load, worked out |
|---|---|---|
| England (QAA) | 10 notional hours | 120 credits x 10 = 1,200 hours; over 30 weeks, 40 a week |
| US federal credit hour | 1 hour in class + 2 outside, weekly, about 15 weeks | 15 credits x 3 = 45 hours a week, at least |
| Carnegie Mellon | 1 hour a week | 36 units = 36 hours a week |
| ECTS | 25 to 30 hours | 60 credits = 1,500 to 1,800 hours a year |
| Open University, part-time | 10 hours (60 credits = 600) | 60 credits = 16 to 18 hours a week |
The University of Sydney is the odd one out: most full-time students, it says, need 20 to 40 hours of private study a week in addition to classes. The UK's 40 includes classes; Sydney's range sits on top of them.
What do universities advise about planning a week and a term?
Universities advise planning the term and the week, and some add the day. We read the pages of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), the University of Sydney, Oxford Brookes University and Cornell University.
Where they agree
All four put deadlines on one term calendar first. UNC's Learning Center (2026) says to enter every exam, paper and project from each syllabus, then work backwards from each due date to decide when to start. Oxford Brookes describes three planners, for the semester, the week and the day, and warns that deadlines bunch at the end of a semester. Cornell's Learning Strategies Center offers a semester calendar and a weekly planner. All four then build the week around fixed commitments: Sydney lists lectures, paid work, shopping, television and sleep.
Where they differ
- How often to plan. UNC is exact: a fixed 15 to 30 minutes each week to map the week. Sydney adds a daily plan, one task at a time.
- How specific a slot is. Sydney says writing "first draft" in a slot beats meaning to do it sometime; UNC asks for a time estimate for every reading and assignment.
- How much time. Sydney gives hours; UNC, Oxford Brookes and Cornell's pages leave the number to the course.
- Breaks. UNC suggests a break every hour and cutting long tasks down, 10 pages of a textbook at a time rather than 50.
Our view: the credits set the hours, and UNC's weekly half hour keeps the plan true. How finely to plan a day, where they differ most, matters least.
Does time management improve grades?
Time management goes with better grades, moderately, but the studies mostly show a link, not a cause.
The 2021 meta-analysis
Aeon et al. (2021) pooled 158 studies with 53,957 participants. Across 76 studies and 30,605 people, time management correlated with academic achievement at r = .26, and with grade point average alone at .21 (57 studies). With standardised tests it showed almost no link (.01, seven studies). It was also linked with lower distress (r = -.22), and the authors conclude it seems to help wellbeing more than performance.
The authors call .26 moderate. Squared, it accounts for about 7% of the differences in achievement between students: a real share, far from all of it.
They name the limits themselves. Most studies were cross-sectional, measuring time management and grades at the same moment. Training studies rarely say what was taught. And being "good" at time management, they write, often depends on income, education and privilege: a student with a job and caring duties has less time, not worse habits.
A study that followed students for four years
Britton and Tesser (1991) gave 90 college students a time-management questionnaire in 1983 and collected their grade point averages four years later. According to the ERIC abstract, time-management practices predicted grades better than the students' Scholastic Aptitude Test scores. We read only the abstract; the paper is paywalled. It is one small group, and planning may travel with other habits that raise grades.
How do I plan my week? Our weekly study plan
You plan your week by fixing your hours from your credits, placing classes and other fixed commitments, then booking named study blocks for each module, with spare time held back. This procedure and template are EdCitation's own.
- Work out your weekly hours. Credits x 10, divided by the weeks in the term (UK), or credit hours x 3 (US). Three 20-credit modules over a 15-week semester is 600 hours: 40 a week, about 13 per module, the figure St Andrews gives for a 20-credit module.
- Enter everything fixed: classes, paid work, travel, caring, sport, meals and sleep.
- Book study blocks by module, in proportion to credits, each with a named task ("A: read the two set chapters") rather than "study".
- Put self-testing and old topics into those blocks; the plan only gives them a time.
- Keep buffer hours that nothing is booked into.
- Keep half an hour a week to plan the next, and move hours towards whichever module has a deadline coming.
Our study schedule template
This weekly plan is ours: three equal modules, A, B and C, in a UK semester.
| Day | Morning | Afternoon | Evening |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monday | Classes, A and B (3 h) | A: prepare for the next class, self-test on last week (3 h) | Free |
| Tuesday | B: reading and notes (3 h) | Classes, C (3 h) | B: problem set or questions (2 h) |
| Wednesday | C: reading and notes (3 h) | A: assignment work (3 h) | Buffer (2 h) |
| Thursday | Classes, A and C (3 h) | B: assignment work (3 h) | A: reading (2 h) |
| Friday | Classes, B and C (3 h) | C: problem set or lab write-up (3 h) | Free |
| Saturday | Paid work or free | Paid work or free | Free |
| Sunday | Free | C: reading (2 h); mixed self-test on A, B and C (1 h) | Plan next week (30 min) |
That is 12 hours of classes, 25 of independent study (eight per module, one mixed), 2 of buffer and half an hour of planning: 39.5 hours. A US student on 15 credit hours would need about 45. If starting a block is the hard part, see how to focus and stop procrastinating.
When your week is not a full-time week
With a job or caring duties, the honest fix is fewer credits, not fewer hours per credit; the Open University's 16 to 18 hours for 60 credits is the benchmark. Postgraduate years are larger: Loughborough counts a master's year as 1,800 notional hours.
How do I build a term plan backwards from deadlines?
You build a term plan by writing each deadline in its week, then working back to the week each stage must start, as UNC advises. For an essay the stages are reading the brief, finding sources, planning, drafting, revising and checking.
People plan too hopefully. Buehler et al. (1994) found predictions of finishing times too optimistic across academic and other tasks, because people pictured the plan rather than their past; in their fourth study the bias disappeared when people linked the prediction to relevant past experience. So check how long your last essay really took. The revision guide gives that study's numbers.
A term plan, worked backwards
Our own example: a 2,000-word essay due at noon on Monday of week 11, with a 300-word plan due on Friday of week 6.
| Week | Stage | Tool |
|---|---|---|
| 11 | Hand in on Monday by noon; the weekend before is buffer, not writing | |
| 10 | Revise; check the reference list and every source in it | Verify references |
| 9 | Finish the full draft; compare it with the brief's checklist | Check your paper |
| 7 to 8 | Draft, section by section, citing as you write | Cite a source |
| 6 | Send the 300-word plan by Friday | |
| 3 to 5 | Find and read sources; note each with its reference | Find sources |
| 2 | Read the brief into a checklist; put both deadlines in the term calendar | Check your paper |
Then lay every module's plan on one calendar. Where two deadlines share a week, as Oxford Brookes warns they will, bring one forward. A dissertation needs a longer version: see the dissertation timeline.
How can EdCitation help you plan from the assignment brief?
EdCitation helps at the start of a plan: knowing exactly what each assignment asks. Its Check your paper is the best tool for that job because every rule comes back beside the sentence of the brief it was read from, so the checklist can be checked against the brief. EdCitation looks references up in the publisher's record and never writes any part of a student's work: the plan, the essay and every sentence stay yours.
We ran it once in September 2026 on this brief, written by us for an invented module:
Module EDU2104 Learning and Motivation: coursework essay. Write a 2,000-word essay (plus or minus 10%) evaluating one theory of student motivation. Use the headings Introduction, Evaluation and Conclusion. Cite at least eight peer-reviewed sources, at least five of them published in the last ten years, in APA 7th edition. Use 12-point Times New Roman, double spacing and 2.5 cm margins. Submit a 300-word plan by Friday of week 6 for formative feedback. The final essay is due at 12 noon on Monday of week 11 through the module's online submission point.
It returned nine rules, each with its source sentence: font Times New Roman; font size 12 pt; line spacing 2; margins 0.98 in; word count 1,800 to 2,200; sources (peer-reviewed) at least 8; source dates "At least 5 sources: from the last 10 years"; citation style APA 7; and required headings Introduction, Evaluation, Conclusion. It set aside, as things no rule can test, the sentence on the 300-word plan due on Friday of week 6 and the one on the final deadline. Those two are the plan's anchors, so they go in your calendar by hand, and the three headings become the sections of your drafting weeks.
Check your paper is free with no account, as are Find sources (about 300 million published works), Cite a source (APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago 18 author-date, Harvard, IEEE, Vancouver) and Verify references. Judging a finished paper against the checklist is Theoretics QA, part of Max at $24 a month; see Pricing. To read a brief well yourself, see how to read an assignment brief and rubric.
Quick questions
How many hours a week should I study at university?
In England, about 40 hours a week for a full-time year, classes included: 120 credits at 10 notional hours each over about 30 weeks. Your own hours will vary.
How many hours of study is one US credit hour?
One US credit hour is at least one hour in class and two outside it each week for about fifteen weeks, under 34 C.F.R. § 600.2, so a 15-credit semester means at least 45 hours a week.
What should a weekly study plan include?
A weekly study plan should include classes and fixed commitments, named study blocks for each module in proportion to its credits, buffer hours, and a short weekly slot to plan the next week, as in our template.
Does time management improve grades?
Time management goes with better grades: Aeon and colleagues' 2021 meta-analysis found a moderate correlation (r = .26) with academic achievement, mostly from studies that cannot show cause.
Can EdCitation make my study schedule?
No. EdCitation's Check your paper reads each assignment brief into a checklist of what it asks, free, and you build the schedule from it with our template.
