Best tools to check a paper before submitting in 2026

The best tools to check a paper before submitting are one for each check, because the checks are different jobs: the references, the brief, the file, similarity and AI, grammar, and the department's own rules. EdCitation publishes this roundup and makes some of the tools in it. Every fact about another product was read on its own pages, checked on 23 September 2026.

For the reference list, EdCitation's Verify references is the best tool: it looks every entry up in the publisher's record and never writes one, verifies a whole pasted list or an uploaded paper, flags retracted papers, never shows "could not check" as "not found", and with the paper uploaded matches every in-text citation to the list, free with no account. Check your paper reads the brief into a checklist, free. Mechanics QA, part of Pro at $8 a month, checks the file's formatting, leftovers, citations, numbers and language, and never rewrites a word.

The other tools' limits are on their own pages. Turnitin's Draft Coach runs only where an institution has licensed it, and Turnitin's AI writing report is not visible to students at all. Grammarly's Free plan leaves out plagiarism detection, AI detection and citations; Microsoft Editor's free level is basic spelling and grammar; Scribbr's plagiarism check costs $19.95 to $39.95 a document. What they do that EdCitation does not: correct your grammar, match a draft against the institution's own store of past papers, and edit by hand, because EdCitation never writes or rewrites any part of a paper.

Which checks does a paper need before it is handed in?

Six, in the order a marker meets them. A tool earns its place for a check when it reads the file itself, looks things up in a record it did not write, keeps "could not check" apart from "not found", shows the result to you alone, and leaves the writing to you.

Where is EdCitation the best tool, and for which checks?

For the references, the brief and the file, for one reason: EdCitation looks a reference up in the publisher's record and never writes one, and reads the paper as a file and never rewrites it. What follows is from the tools' own pages; this article reports no test of them.

The reference list, against the publisher's record

Hand Verify references a pasted list, or the paper itself as a Word document or PDF, and it looks each entry up by DOI, or failing that by title, year and first author. The verdicts are three: verified; doubtful, shown as "check this"; and not found, meaning no publisher, registry or library has a record of it. Retraction Watch's database is consulted for every entry, so a retracted paper is flagged even when its details are perfect, and an index that did not answer produces "could not check" rather than "not found". Upload the whole paper and each in-text citation is tied to an entry and each entry back to the text. No model reads the paper, nothing is kept, and there is no charge and no account. The best reference checkers in 2026 sets it beside Crossref's Simple Text Query, Scite and Zotero.

The paper, against its own brief

Check your paper, free with no account, reads the assignment's instructions into a checklist: word limits, required headings, how many sources and how recent, the citation style, font, spacing and margins, each shown with the sentence it was read from, so a misread rule can be unticked. How to read an assignment brief and rubric shows where that check saves marks. Theoretics QA, part of Max at $24 a month, then judges the uploaded paper against that checklist, with quotations from the paper as its evidence for each item. It gives no grade and writes nothing.

The file: formatting, leftovers, citations, numbers

Mechanics QA is the best tool for the mechanics of the manuscript, because it is a check of the file and never a rewrite: it reads the Word document's or PDF's own properties, and every finding names the rule it broke and the fix. It checks font, size, spacing, margins, title page, headings and the reference list against the APA 7 student paper; finds comments, tracked changes, placeholders and template text; matches each citation to the list and looks each reference up in the publisher's record; finds figures that do not add up or disagree between sections; and catches the slips a spell-checker lets through. It says where the paper stands, from ready to hand in to start with the must-fix items, with each finding marked on the paper itself. No model reads the paper. It is part of Pro at $8 a month. The rules are the ones in common APA 7 formatting mistakes; no tool, this one included, can promise a mark.

What can a student see in Turnitin before submitting?

A similarity report through Draft Coach, if the institution has licensed it, and never the AI writing report. Both facts are Turnitin's own.

Draft Coach, where the institution licenses it

Turnitin's product page describes similarity checks "as they write in Word for the web and Google Docs", a citation check for missing references and citations, and a grammar check (Turnitin, n.d.-a). Its FAQ says the add-on "cannot be used on the desktop version of Microsoft Word", "first needs to be configured by your institution's Turnitin administrator and is license dependent", and is enabled in Google Docs or Word online, not both (Turnitin, n.d.-b). A draft is matched against Turnitin's student repository, journals, the institution's private repository and web pages, is not added to any repository, and there is "currently no way for students to share their results with instructors". The student guide allows "a total of three reports that you can run for your draft" and says Turnitin "does not set a similarity percentage that you should try to avoid or achieve" (Turnitin, n.d.-d). It is the closest preview of the marker's report a student can get before submission, where the institution provides it. How to check your paper for plagiarism before submitting covers reading it match by match.

The AI writing report: instructors only

Turnitin's AI writing FAQ, updated the day before we read it, says "the AI writing detection indicator and report are not visible to students"; an instructor can download the report as a PDF and choose to share it (Turnitin, n.d.-c). The same page says the percentage "should not be used as the sole basis for action", and that scores from 1% to 19% are shown as an asterisk rather than a number. There is no self-check version, so any detector a student runs is not the one the marker will use.

Which similarity or AI check can you run yourself, and what does it cost?

EdCitation's Check plagiarism and Check AI on credits inside Pro, or Scribbr by the document; no result from any vendor is proof of anything, and the published tests say why.

EdCitation's Check plagiarism marks every passage that matches published or web text and names its source; Check AI labels each passage AI-written, AI-assisted or human and shows the score behind the label. Both sit inside Pro at $8 a month and are paid in credits, 240 a month on Pro and 720 on Max, more from $10, with the cost shown before the check runs; a failed check costs nothing and the report goes to the person who ran it and no one else. EdCitation states that neither result is proof. Scribbr sells its plagiarism check by the document, at three prices by length from $19.95 to $39.95, "per check, not a subscription", and promises that submissions are never added to its database (Scribbr, n.d.-b); its AI detector is free up to 1,200 words a check without a sign-up, and its own page says "no AI Detector can provide complete accuracy" (Scribbr, n.d.-a). EdCitation vs Scribbr has the price bands and the accuracy claims in full.

Foltýnek et al. (2020) tested 15 web-based text-matching systems on material in eight languages and concluded that "software cannot determine plagiarism" and that the systems "clearly do not find all plagiarism". Weber-Wulff et al. (2023) tested 12 public detectors and two commercial systems, Turnitin and PlagiarismCheck, found them "neither accurate nor reliable", and found that obfuscation techniques "significantly worsen the performance of tools". Perkins et al. (2024) ran 805 samples through six detectors after simple manipulation and report "significant reductions in detector accuracy (17.4%)", concluding that detectors "cannot currently be recommended for determining academic integrity violations". A preview is a warning light, not a verdict; how to check your paper for AI before submitting says what to keep as proof of your own authorship instead.

Which grammar checker is worth using on an essay?

Grammarly's Free plan or Microsoft Editor's free level, for spelling and grammar; EdCitation has no grammar tool and does not pretend to.

Grammarly's plans page lists the Free plan as "Write without spelling and grammar mistakes", "See your writing tone" and 100 AI prompts, and lists plagiarism detection, AI-generated text detection and citations among what Free does not include; Pro is shown at $12 a month (Grammarly, n.d.).

Microsoft's support page says a Microsoft account gives "basic spelling and grammar checking" free, and that a Microsoft 365 subscription adds "clarity, conciseness, formality, vocabulary suggestions, and more", in Word, Outlook, Edge and a browser extension for Edge and Chrome (Microsoft, n.d.). Run the grammar checker first and the file check after it, because a grammar checker can leave tracked changes behind.

Does any tool replace the department's own checklist?

No. Every tool above checks against a general rule or record; the marker checks against the module handbook, and where the two differ the handbook wins. Scheinfeld et al. (2025) reviewed 32 studies of formatting accuracy in APA references and found "no consensus on assessment methodology, terminology, or reporting metrics" between them. If the people who study reference errors do not agree on what counts as one, only the brief says which errors your marker counts. A reference manager covers one line of that checklist: Zotero (2019) warns when an item in your library, or one you cite in Word, has been retracted, for items with a DOI or PMID, and does not check that a reference exists.

The night before, in order

1. Run Check your paper on the brief; untick anything it misread and keep the checklist open.
2. Upload the paper to Verify references. Rebuild each "check this" from the record with Cite a source, replace each "not found" with a source you have read, and verify each "could not check" yourself.
3. Run Mechanics QA, accept or reject every tracked change, delete every comment, and clear the must-fix findings.
4. If your institution provides Draft Coach, run a similarity report. If not and you want a preview, run Check plagiarism, knowing the cost first.
5. Run a grammar checker, then read the paper once more yourself.
6. Go down the department's own checklist, including any declaration of AI use, and only then submit.

Quick questions

What is the best free tool to check a paper before submitting?

EdCitation's Verify references, for the reference list: every entry is looked up in the publisher's record, retracted papers are flagged, and "could not check" is never shown as "not found", with no account. Check your paper, also free, reads the brief into a checklist.

Can I run my paper through Turnitin before I submit it?

Only through Draft Coach, and only if your institution has licensed it in Google Docs or Word online. It does not run in desktop Word, and Turnitin's pages offer no version a student can buy.

Can students see Turnitin's AI writing score?

No. Turnitin's own FAQ says the AI writing indicator and report "are not visible to students"; an instructor can download the report as a PDF and choose to share it.

Will a formatting or reference checker guarantee that my paper passes?

No tool can promise a grade, a pass, or that a detector will not flag something, and EdCitation does not. Mechanics QA reports what the file breaks against the style rule; the mark is the marker's.
