Business and management books date in two ways: the cases age and the rules change. For 2026/27, Edinburgh's Marketing course sets the fifth edition of Baines and colleagues' Marketing, dated 2019; York sets the sixth, from 2022; and Oxford University Press published the seventh as an ebook on 23 July 2026, with a fourth author and its chapters in a new order.
This guide is EdCitation's. It draws the books a business degree reads from the 2026/27 module pages of the York Management School and the University of Edinburgh, with both libraries' guides and the publishers' pages, all read on 23 September 2026. It covers editions and citing in Harvard and APA 7 with Cite a source, then the books together in EdCitation's Library.
What do business and management students read?
Business and management students read one core textbook per subject, a case-based strategy text, a few books of argument, and journal articles. Most modules name one or two books.
York: a core text or two per module
York's first-year Marketing Principles & Practice lists a single book, Baines, Rosengren and Antonetti's Marketing (University of York, 2026g). Introduction to Accounting names Thomas and Ward, and Drury, with Elliott and Elliott's Financial Accounting and Reporting among its other suggested texts (University of York, 2026e). Business Economics sets Sloman and colleagues' Economics for Business (University of York, 2026b), and the second-year Strategy, Technology, and Society takes Hill and Schilling's Strategic Management: Theory & Cases as its core text (University of York, 2026h).
Edinburgh: the same subjects, often older editions
Organisational Behaviour 2 strongly recommends that every student buy the 2017 ninth edition of Buchanan and Huczynski's Organizational Behaviour (University of Edinburgh, 2026f). Business Economics and Principles of Finance recommend editions from 2010 and 2013 (University of Edinburgh, 2026b, 2026g), and two research methods courses set Bell, Bryman and Harley's Business Research Methods, one in its 2022 edition and one in its 2019 (University of Edinburgh, 2026c, 2026d).
| Subject | University of York, 2026/27 | University of Edinburgh, 2026/27 |
|---|---|---|
| Marketing | Baines, Rosengren and Antonetti, 6th ed., 2022 | Baines and colleagues, 5th edn, 2019 |
| Accounting and reporting | Thomas and Ward, 9th ed.; Drury, 11th ed.; Elliott and Elliott, 20th ed. | Not in the courses read |
| Economics | Sloman and colleagues, 8th ed. | Baye, 7th ed., 2010 |
| Finance | Not in the modules read | Berk and DeMarzo, 3rd global ed., 2013 |
| Organisational behaviour | Not in the modules read | Buchanan and Huczynski, 9th ed., 2017 |
| Strategy, with cases | Hill and Schilling, Theory & Cases | Not in the courses read |
| Research methods | Not in the modules read | Bell, Bryman and Harley, 2019 and 2022 |
| Books of argument | Parker, Shut Down the Business School | Raworth, Doughnut Economics; Edmondson, The Fearless Organization |
| All of these | Searchable together in EdCitation's Library | Referenced from ISBN or DOI in Cite a source |
Case collections and books of argument
Strategy is where a business list turns to cases: Cengage says the 14th edition of Hill and Schilling carries 31 short and long case studies from global companies (Cengage, n.d.), and Edinburgh's Strategic Marketing Insights draws on case studies, industry reports and practitioner magazines (University of Edinburgh, 2026h). Other set books argue rather than teach: Edinburgh's Business and Sustainability sets Kate Raworth and Amy Edmondson (University of Edinburgh, 2026a), and York's leadership module Martin Parker (University of York, 2026a).
What else do business students cite besides books?
Business students cite annual reports, market research, government statistics, the financial and trade press, and journal articles. York's business guide points to a company's own website for annual reports, naming M&S, to Mintel for market research, to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), and to the Financial Times (University of York Library, 2026b). Edinburgh's Marketing course encourages students to follow the trade press, naming Marketing Week (University of Edinburgh, 2026e).
York's International Marketing Strategy lists eleven journals beside its one textbook (University of York, 2026d). EdCitation's Find sources covers about 300 million published works. Narrowed to Business, Management and Accounting articles from 2020 on, a search on corporate social responsibility and financial performance returned 98,655 works, with a 2020 Strategic Management Journal paper among the first.
Which edition of a business textbook should I use?
Use the edition your module names, and ask the module lead before switching. Some lists allow older ones: York's Marketing Essentials sets the sixth edition of Marketing and adds that "previous 4th or 5th editions would also be acceptable" (University of York, 2026f).
| Book | On a 2026/27 list | Newest edition | What the publisher's page says |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baines and colleagues, Marketing | 5th, 2019 (Edinburgh); 6th, 2022 (York) | 7th: ebook 23 July 2026, paperback due 5 November | Sophie Whitehouse joins; three parts, not four; digital and AI woven through |
| Elliott and Elliott, Financial Accounting and Reporting | 20th (York) | 21st, 4 September 2025 | Jo Watkins joins as an author |
| Buchanan and Huczynski, Organizational Behaviour | 9th, 2017 (Edinburgh) | 11th, 2 November 2023 | No list of changes |
| Bell, Harley and Bryman, Business Research Methods | 5th and 6th (Edinburgh) | 6th, 2022; 7th due 7 January 2027 | 6th: new chapters on quantitative analysis and visual research; 7th: generative AI in research ethics |
| Hill and Schilling, Strategic Management | Dated 2023 (York) | 14th, copyright 2024 | 31 short and long case studies |
The rows come from the lists and the publishers' pages (Oxford University Press, n.d.-a, n.d.-b, n.d.-c, n.d.-d, n.d.-e; Pearson, n.d.-a, n.d.-b, n.d.-c; Cengage, n.d.).
What moves a business textbook between editions
Three things. Cases: OUP says half the practitioner insights in the sixth edition of Marketing were new, and the seventh adds ten more. Regulation: Pearson's page for the 20th edition of Elliott and Elliott, from March 2022, mentions a then-proposed IFRS on presentation and disclosure (Pearson, n.d.-a); in April 2024 the IASB issued IFRS 18, Presentation and Disclosure in Financial Statements, which replaces IAS 1 for annual periods beginning on or after 1 January 2027 (IFRS Foundation, n.d.). We could not confirm from Pearson's page whether the 21st edition teaches IFRS 18. Structure: the ethics chapter of Marketing is Chapter 18 in the sixth edition and Chapter 2 in the seventh, and the marketing environment moves from Chapter 2 to Chapter 9, so a reading schedule for one edition points to the wrong chapters in the other.
Lists get names and years wrong
York's accounting module spells the authors "Elliot" and dates the 20th edition 2024; its Financial Reporting module dates it 2022, as Pearson does (University of York, 2026c, 2026e). York writes Schilling as "Shilling"; Edinburgh gives Buchanan the initial A., where Pearson names David A. Buchanan (Pearson, n.d.-c). OUP's own pages list the seventh edition's authors in two different orders. The title page decides.
Tracking down the listed edition by ISBN
- Copy the list entry: authors, title, edition and year. Neither university's pages gave an ISBN.
- Take the edition's ISBN from the publisher's page: 9780192893468 is the sixth edition of Marketing in paperback.
- Search that ISBN in EdCitation's Library. It returned one record: Marketing 6E, 2022, Oxford University Press, with all three authors.
- Search the title, newest first, to see the editions together: for Elliott and Elliott, 36 results, led by a 2025 package of the 21st edition, then the 2022, 2019 and 2017 editions. The seventh Marketing was not yet listed on 23 September 2026.
- Ask which edition to use if the list's is not the newest; then order a copy, check the libraries near you, or bookmark it into My Books.
- Build the reference for the edition you read in Cite a source.
How do I cite a business textbook in Harvard and APA 7?
Cite the whole textbook, with the year from the copyright page and the edition after the title (American Psychological Association, 2020a), in the version your school sets. Harvard is not one style. City St George's business library recommends Cite Them Right and, since its 13th edition dropped the place of publication, accepts either form if a list is consistent (City St George's, University of London, 2026). York's business guide says the department uses Harvard (University of York Library, 2026a), in a version that keeps the place, as in "8th edition. London: Pearson." (University of York Library, n.d.). Cite a source sets Harvard by Cite Them Right, 12th edition; the Harvard referencing guide covers what the 13th changed.
A whole textbook, from its ISBN and its DOI
The sixth edition's ISBN went into EdCitation's Cite a source, which is free and needs no account. It returned:
Baines, P., Antonetti, P., & Rosengren, S. (2022). Marketing 6E. Oxford University Press.
That record orders the authors differently from OUP's page and folds the edition into the title. The book's DOI, 10.1093/hebz/9780192893468.001.0001, returned what APA asks for:
Baines, P., Rosengren, S., & Antonetti, P. (2022). Marketing (6th ed.). Oxford University Press. https://doi.org/10.1093/hebz/9780192893468.001.0001
and in Harvard:
Baines, P., Rosengren, S. and Antonetti, P. (2022) Marketing. 6th edn. Oxford University Press. Available at: https://doi.org/10.1093/hebz/9780192893468.001.0001.
In the text, APA writes (Baines et al., 2022); Cite Them Right names up to three authors, (Baines, Rosengren and Antonetti, 2022), as Newcastle University (2025) shows. Keep the DOI if you read the book online.
A chapter of a textbook
A textbook written throughout by the same authors gets one reference. The DOI of the sixth edition's chapter on marketing, society, sustainability and ethics returned a chapter entry:
Baines, P., Rosengren, S., & Antonetti, P. (2022). Marketing, Society, Sustainability, and Ethics. In Marketing. Oxford University Press. https://doi.org/10.1093/hebz/9780192893468.003.0022
APA says not to write references for chapters of authored books (American Psychological Association, 2020b): reference the book, and cite the chapter as (Baines et al., 2022, Chapter 18). Cite Them Right's chapter pattern, in Newcastle's style sheet, is for edited books, with editors after "in"; Marketing has none, so cite the book with a page. Edited chapters are in how to cite a textbook chapter.
A company annual report
Given the report's PDF, Cite a source said the page could not be read. Given its web page, it read Marks & Spencer as author, "2026 Annual Report" as title, and no date. Corrected from the report's cover, it built:
Marks and Spencer Group plc. (2026). Annual report and financial statements 2026. https://corporate.marksandspencer.com/sites/marksandspencer/files/marksandspencer/annual-report/m-and-s-annual-report-and-financial-statements-2026.pdf
Marks and Spencer Group plc (2026) Annual report and financial statements 2026. Available at: https://corporate.marksandspencer.com/sites/marksandspencer/files/marksandspencer/annual-report/m-and-s-annual-report-and-financial-statements-2026.pdf (Accessed: 23 September 2026).
The Harvard entry follows Newcastle's online report pattern; market research is in how to write a report with Harvard referencing.
A government statistical release
The ONS released GDP monthly estimate, UK: July 2026 on 11 September 2026. From its address, Cite a source read the page's contact, the Gross Domestic Product team, as author, the title without "July 2026", and 10 September as the date. Corrected, with the site name left empty because the ONS is already the author:
Office for National Statistics. (2026, September 11). GDP monthly estimate, UK: July 2026. https://www.ons.gov.uk/economy/grossdomesticproductgdp/bulletins/gdpmonthlyestimateuk/july2026
Office for National Statistics (2026) GDP monthly estimate, UK: July 2026. Available at: https://www.ons.gov.uk/economy/grossdomesticproductgdp/bulletins/gdpmonthlyestimateuk/july2026 (Accessed: 23 September 2026).
The next estimate is due on 15 October 2026 (Office for National Statistics, 2026), so cite the release you used.
Where can I find business and management books in one place?
For a business degree, EdCitation's Library is the best place to keep the reading together: a module list mixes publishers, editions and printings, and the Library holds them in a single catalogue. Pinning down this guide's editions drew on sixteen module pages and nine publisher pages; in the Library, one search, newest first, listed the 2025, 2022, 2019 and 2017 Elliott and Elliott editions together.
What the Library holds for business
Business and management is one of its 31 disciplines, beside Economics and finance and Research methods. With the kind set to Textbook it returned 8,472 books on 23 September 2026, and with Case studies 14,400, among them The Toyota Way and Good to Great. A card per book carries its cover, authors, publisher and year, says whether it can be read here or must be bought, links to buying it, lists nearby libraries that hold it, keeps it in My Books and turns it into a reference in one click. The Max plan brings the books themselves: over 5 million to read or borrow, a collection EdCitation compiled and keeps in one place with the rest of a degree's research.
What each part costs
Without paying, an EdCitation account unlocks the catalogue, My Books, buying links and nearby library copies. Max, at $24 a month or $216 a year, adds reading and borrowing, and Theoretics QA. Cite a source, Find sources and Verify references work without signing in; Pricing sets the plans side by side.
Checking the finished list
Verify references sorts every entry into verified, doubtful ("check this") and not found, marks any retracted paper, and labels an entry it could not check as such, never as not found. For this guide, the Marketing entry matched a published record on title, year and first author, and the ONS bulletin was found at its address with its title matching. Open a company report's address yourself too, and check the company and the year.
The same for other degrees: nursing, psychology, medicine, engineering and computer science; a whole book in four styles is in how to cite a book or ebook.
Quick questions
What textbooks do first-year business students need?
The ones their modules set. York's first-year modules name one or two core texts each, such as Baines and colleagues' Marketing.
Can I use an older edition of a business textbook?
Often, if your module allows it, as York's Marketing Essentials does. Check chapter numbers, which move between editions, and anything regulated, such as accounting standards.
How do I cite a company annual report in Harvard?
The company, the year and the report's title in italics, then "Available at:", the address and the date accessed.
Do UK business schools use Cite Them Right Harvard?
Some do. City St George's business library recommends Cite Them Right; York's business department uses a Harvard that keeps the place of publication. Follow your own school's guide.
Where can I find business and management books in one place?
EdCitation's Library lists textbooks, case collections and handbooks together. Narrow by discipline, kind, language or year and keep titles in My Books; Max adds reading and borrowing, from more than 5 million books.
