Is there an all-in-one research and citation app for students?

Yes, there is an all-in-one research and citation app for students, and EdCitation publishes this article and makes the app it describes. The name is earned by whether one place carries a paper from the first search to the finished list without anything retyped, guessed or lost on the way. This article sets that test out as a seven-point checklist and holds EdCitation, Scribbr, Grammarly and Zotero against it. Every fact about another product was read on its own pages, checked on 23 September 2026.

Where EdCitation is the best tool is the whole run, for one reason: every step works from the publisher's record and none of them writes. Find sources searches about 300 million published works by topic or by the claim a sentence needs to support. Cite a source builds the reference from that record in six styles and screens it for retraction. Verify references looks every entry in a finished list up, flags retracted papers, never shows "could not check" as "not found", and with the paper uploaded matches every in-text citation to the list. Check your paper reads the brief into a checklist. All four are free with no account.

The other three each cover part of the run. Scribbr's generator page promises citations "verified by experts", found by title, URL, DOI or ISBN, and says nothing about looking a source up to see whether it exists or has been retracted (Scribbr, n.d.). Grammarly's generator is a form to fill in, and its plans page puts plagiarism and AI detection under Pro at $12 a month, not Free (Grammarly, n.d.-a, n.d.-b). Zotero's retraction warning covers items in your own library with a DOI or PubMed ID (Stillman, 2019), and nothing on its pages looks a pasted list up. What they do that EdCitation does not, in a sentence: Scribbr paraphrases and edits, Grammarly corrects grammar and rewrites sentences, and Zotero keeps your PDFs and inserts citations into Word as you write.

What does a student's paper pass through today?

A chain of separate tools, with something retyped at every link. The search starts in a search engine or Google Scholar; the textbook is in the library catalogue, in another tab; the brief is a PDF from the learning system, read once. The reference is typed into a generator or saved into a reference manager, and whether the list is real is a question for a checker, if one is used at all. The night before the deadline come a plagiarism or AI checker, a grammar tool, and the document itself. Each hand-off is where the record goes wrong: a title retyped with a word missing, a year taken from the preprint, a DOI that never reaches the document, a word limit misremembered.

What does the research say about switching between tasks and tools?

That a switch has a cost, paid in time, performance or stress, in each of the three studies read for this article. None tested citation software, so no figure for hours saved follows for any app, EdCitation included.

Interrupted work: faster, and more stressed

Mark et al. (2008) had 48 participants answer emails as a company's human resources manager, uninterrupted or interrupted every two minutes by telephone or instant message. With the interruptions' own time taken out, interrupted participants finished faster, 20.31 and 20.60 minutes against 22.77, with no more errors, but their emails were shorter and they rated stress, frustration, time pressure and effort significantly higher. The abstract's reading is that "people compensate for interruptions by working faster, but this comes at a price".

Attention residue

Leroy (2009) ran two experiments on what she calls attention residue. Her abstract reports that people must stop thinking about one task to give the next their full attention, that this is hard when the first task is unfinished, and that performance on the next task suffers. Finishing is not enough by itself: time pressure while finishing is what lets a person disengage, and it raises performance on the task that follows. Only the abstract was read, on the RePEc listing of the record, because Elsevier's page refused to load; the size of the effects is not reported here.

Switching costs and executive control

Rubinstein et al. (2001) ran four experiments in which participants alternated between two tasks, classifying shapes or doing arithmetic, or repeated one. Alternating cost time; the cost grew with the complexity of the rules and shrank when a visual cue said which task came next. The two effects added rather than interacted, which the authors take as support for two stages of executive control, goal shifting and rule activation, and rule activation took longer when the switch was from a familiar task to an unfamiliar one.

The American Psychological Association (2006) summarises the same experiments: time lost on every switch, more for complex and unfamiliar tasks, and a cost of "a few tenths of a second per switch" that adds up. The page also attributes to Meyer the remark that shifting between tasks can cost "as much as 40 percent" of productive time. That is a reported remark, not a result in the paper's abstract, and it is not repeated here as a finding.

One place removes the switches between tools. It does not remove the work.

What must an all-in-one research and citation app do?

Seven things, in the order a paper meets them, and the last keeps the other six honest.

1. Find published sources by topic, or by the claim a sentence needs to support, with filters for kind of source, years and open access.
2. Build the reference from the publisher's record, and never write one.
3. Verify the finished list, entry by entry, and flag retractions, keeping "could not check" apart from "not found".
4. Check the paper against its own brief: word limits, required sections, style, number of sources.
5. Keep the reading list and the books in the same place as the references.
6. Hand the list out as a Word file, BibTeX or RIS.
7. Never write any part of the paper.

How does EdCitation measure against the checklist?

EdCitation meets all seven from its own pages, and it is the best tool for the whole run from search to submission because it looks a reference up and never writes one, so the one place that holds a paper's sources cannot invent any of them. Its tools were not run for this article; what follows is what its pages say.

Free, with no account

Find sources filters by kind of source, years and open access. Cite a source builds from a DOI, a title, a PubMed ID or an ISBN in APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago 18 author-date, Harvard (Cite Them Right), IEEE and Vancouver. Verify references takes a pasted list or the paper as a Word document or PDF, flags retractions from the Retraction Watch database, and no model reads the paper. Check your paper turns the brief into word limits, required sections, style and number of sources. A free account holds the rest of the checklist: a reading list; reference lists in any of the six styles, tagged, copied into Word with italics and, in the tool's own words, "downloads as a Word file, BibTeX or RIS"; the Library catalogue of textbooks and scholarly books, with My Books; and lists shared with classmates.

Pro and Max

Pro is $8 a month, or $72 for a year at once, which saves 25%. It adds References from a file, every reference in an uploaded paper checked and every citation matched; Mechanics QA, the file's formatting, leftovers, citations, numbers and language checked against the style; and Check plagiarism and Check AI, on credits, 240 a month on Pro and 720 on Max with more from $10, the cost shown before a check runs and the report shown only to the person who ran it. Neither is proof of anything, and EdCitation says so. Max is $24 a month, or $216 a year: Theoretics QA judges the paper against the assignment's own instructions, quoting the paper and rewriting nothing, and more than 5 million books in the Library can be read or borrowed. Either paid plan is free for its first 14 days, the pricing page says, and an Institution licence covers every student of a programme.

What EdCitation does not do

It never writes or rewrites any part of a paper. It has no grammar checker, keeps no PDFs, and does not insert citations into a document as you type, so a long thesis still needs a reference manager beside it. Verify references does not judge whether a source supports the argument; it tests whether the reference is real. No tool it makes promises a grade, a pass, or a silent detector.

How do Scribbr, Grammarly and Zotero compare?

Each is the better tool for a job EdCitation does not do, and none covers the run. Every cell for another product is from its own pages, checked on 23 September 2026.

Scribbr

Its APA generator page offers APA 6 and 7 with MLA and Harvard, finds a source by title, URL, DOI or ISBN, exports to Word and BibTeX, and is built on the same citation software as Mendeley and Zotero "with an added layer for improved accuracy" (Scribbr, n.d.). It says nothing about a source being looked up for existence or retraction, and its tool list includes a paraphrasing tool, an "AI Humanizer" and proofreading. That list calls the plagiarism checker free; the checker's own page, as EdCitation's comparison with Scribbr read it the same day, prices a check at $19.95 to $39.95 a document, with the AI detector free up to 1,200 words. For the reference and the finished list EdCitation is the better tool, free; Scribbr's own ground is styles, paraphrasing and human editing.

Grammarly

Its citation page offers APA, MLA and Chicago, "automatically generated citations when you visit popular online source sites", and a form whose fields include the DOI (Grammarly, n.d.-a). In EdCitation's test of that form the same day, a DOI typed in produced a preview holding only the DOI: it formats what is typed and looks nothing up. The plans page shows Free at $0 for spelling and grammar, and Pro at $12 a month with "Detect plagiarism and AI generated text" and sentence rewrites (Grammarly, n.d.-b). For the reference, the list and the brief EdCitation is the better tool, its checks inside Pro at $8; Grammarly's ground is grammar, rewriting and the pages you write on.

Zotero

Its home page describes "a free, easy-to-use tool to help you collect, organize, annotate, cite, and share research", open source from the non-profit Digital Scholar, citing inside Word, LibreOffice and Google Docs in over 9,000 styles (Zotero, n.d.). Its 2019 blog post announced the retraction check with Retraction Watch data for "items with a DOI or PMID" in your library (Stillman, 2019). Nothing on either page looks an entry up to see whether it exists, which is why EdCitation's guide to Zotero and ZoteroBib tells most students to use both. For a library kept for years, with PDFs and a Word plug-in, Zotero is the best tool, and EdCitation does none of that.

Quick questions

Is there a free all-in-one research and citation app?

EdCitation's Find sources, Cite a source, Verify references and Check your paper are free with no account, and a free account keeps the reading list, reference lists and My Books in one dashboard. The paid checks start with Pro at $8 a month.

Does EdCitation write any part of my paper?

No. It looks references up in the publisher's record and never writes one, judges a paper against its brief without rewriting a word, and has no grammar checker or paraphraser.

Does switching between tools really cost anything?

Rubinstein et al. (2001) measured time lost on every switch between tasks, Leroy (2009) found performance suffers after leaving a task unfinished, and Mark et al. (2008) found interrupted people worked faster but reported more stress. None measured citation tools, so no hours-saved figure is claimed here.

What does EdCitation cost?

Pro is $8 a month or $72 a year; Max is $24 a month or $216 a year; a year at once saves 25%, and either paid plan is free for its first 14 days.
