To rebut an argument, point to the exact claim you are answering, say what is wrong with it, show why with reasoning or evidence, and finish by explaining why your side's point should count for more. Debate teachers call this four-step refutation: "they say", "but", "because", "therefore". The last step is the one most speakers skip, and it is the one that wins the exchange.

On 27 September 2026 we read the rules and teaching materials of the World Universities Debating Council, the World Schools Debating Championships, the National Speech & Debate Association (NSDA) and the Middle School Public Debate Program. Where they disagree, we say so. The motion and the worked examples are ours.
A rebuttal often turns on a source, and the quickest honest answer to a doubtful card is to check it. What is a rebuttal in debate?
A rebuttal is anything you say that shows the other side's argument is wrong, beside the point, less important than yours, or not enough to carry their case. That is close to the definition in section 2.5 of the World Universities Debating Council (n.d.) manual, which adds that rebuttal need not be labelled and can come anywhere in a speech: it is simply material that engages with what the other side said.
Rebuttal, refutation and the rebuttal speech
The words overlap. The Middle School Public Debate Program (2012) says "refutation" and splits it in two: direct refutation answers a particular claim, while indirect refutation raises an issue the other side avoided. In NSDA events, "rebuttal" is also the name of a speech: Lincoln-Douglas and policy debate end with rebuttals (National Speech & Debate Association, 2026), and in Public Forum the second speaker's rebuttal answers the opponents' case (National Speech & Debate Association, 2021). In World Schools debate the third speaker's main job is to respond, and every speaker is expected to spend more time answering as the debate goes on (World Schools Debating Championships, 2026, rules 9 and 10).
Spoken rebuttal happens against the clock, to a person in the room; the written kind is in a counterargument and rebuttal in an essay.
What happens to an argument nobody answers
Here the rulebooks disagree, and the difference changes how you spend your time.
- Middle School Public Debate Program (2012): a team that does not refute an idea is treated as having agreed with it.
- NSDA Public Forum guide: an unanswered argument is "dropped", and a common view is that it counts as true within the round.
- World Universities Debating Council (n.d.): a major claim left unchallenged counts as conceded, but there is no duty to answer everything, and an absurd or marginal point may be left alone.
- World Schools Debating Championships (2026): judges mark a weak argument down even if nobody exposes the weakness.
The safe habit everywhere: answer what matters, and say in a sentence why you leave the rest.
How do you rebut in a debate with four-step refutation?
Four-step refutation is a sentence pattern for answering one argument: restate, contradict, support, compare. The Middle School Public Debate Program (2012) teaches it, and its poster sets out the same steps (Middle School and High School Public Debate Program, n.d.).
- "They say..." Name the argument so the judge can find it in their notes: three to seven words, says the teachers' guide, in the opponent's own language, says the poster.
- "But..." State your counter-claim in one sentence. It can contradict theirs, or attack their reasoning or evidence.
- "Because..." Give the reasoning and evidence. Without it you have an assertion against an assertion.
- "Therefore..." Compare and say why yours wins: better reasoning, better or newer evidence, support from past events, taking theirs into account ("even if they are right..."), greater significance, or a better fit with experience.
A four-step rebuttal on a motion of our own
Our motion, for this guide only: This House would move schools to a four-day week. The proposition has argued that a day off rests pupils, so results will rise. Our opposition rebuttal:
They say a four-day week will raise results. But the most recent evidence we found points the other way. Because Thompson, 2021, followed test scores for grades 3 to 8 in Oregon from 2005 to 2019 and found maths and reading scores fell after the switch, a fall the study ties to losing three to four hours of school a week; and Morton, 2021, found no detectable effect on achievement in Oklahoma. Therefore, even if some pupils are better rested, the proposition must show that rest makes up for lost teaching, and the evidence says it does not.
The spoken citations meet the NSDA's minimum, surname and year. Both findings are from the studies' own abstracts (Thompson, 2021; Morton, 2021).
Which kind of rebuttal should you choose?
Choose the cheapest reply that disposes of the argument. The Middle School Public Debate Program (2012) ranks four strategies, best first: show the argument is irrelevant, show it is insignificant, turn it to support your side, and only then answer it head on. The first two are strategic agreement: you concede the fact and deny that it matters. The NSDA's Public Forum guide sorts replies into offence (reasons to vote for you) and defence (reasons their point should not matter), and warns against turning both the link and the impact of one argument, which it calls a double turn (National Speech & Debate Association, 2021).

How do you weigh in a rebuttal speech?
Weighing is telling the judge why your argument matters more than theirs when both survive. The NSDA's Public Forum guide warns that if you do not weigh, the judge makes the comparison for you, and names three measures: probability (how likely the impact is), magnitude (how many people it affects and how badly) and time frame (how soon it comes and how long it lasts). It adds two advanced moves: a prerequisite, where their benefit cannot happen until yours does, and a short circuit, where your argument stops theirs happening at all (National Speech & Debate Association, 2021).
When the teams disagree about the measure
In British Parliamentary debate teams may argue about the measure itself, and the World Universities Debating Council (n.d.) tells judges to settle that argument rather than apply their own: first a measure all teams agree on, openly or implicitly, then one a team has proved, and only as a last resort what the ordinary intelligent voter would think important. Judges must not assume the best consequences win unless a team argues it. Whip speakers may add new weighing.
Weighing on our motion, as the opposition: "Grant their best case, that some pupils rest better. That benefit is uncertain; the lost teaching time is measured, falls on every pupil, and adds up over years."
How do you attack the other side's evidence?
Attack evidence at four points: who wrote it, when, whether it fits this motion, and whether it says what they claim. Under the NSDA's rules, evidence must come from a specific, identifiable source, and a debater must produce the written citation on request: author, date, source, title, access date for digital evidence, URL, the author's qualifications and page (National Speech & Debate Association, 2026, rule 7.1).
Questioning a card without stopping the round
You may question a card's credibility as an ordinary argument, which the judge weighs like any other. A formal allegation stops the round and covers only three charges: distortion (words added or cut so the author's conclusion changes), non-existent evidence (including a source that does not contain what was read) and clipping (claiming to have read marked text you skipped). An upheld allegation costs the accused the round and a failed one costs the accuser, so hold the original before you allege.
The four checks, on our motion
Suppose the proposition reads Anderson and Walker (2015) as proof that a four-day week raises results.
- Source. A named journal, Education Finance and Policy, with a DOI. Nothing to attack; spend the time elsewhere.
- Date. 2015. Newer studies exist, and one found scores fell (Thompson, 2021).
- Relevance. School-level data from elementary schools in Colorado; the motion covers every school.
- What it says. The authors report a generally positive relationship and conclude there is little evidence the switch harms achievement. A card read as "four-day weeks raise results" asks it to carry more than its authors did.
In British Parliamentary and World Schools debate nobody reads quoted cards under citation rules, so there you rebut the reasoning and the examples; debate formats explained sets out how each format treats evidence.
What happened when we checked a debater's source list?
We pasted four real references of the kind debaters cite into Verify references on 27 September 2026. The third entry's year is our mistake, made on purpose: we gave Morton's Oklahoma study as 2019, with no DOI. The fourth is a canvassing study a debater arguing about persuasion might still find quoted.

None came back not found, and our wrong year was caught with no DOI to go on. Morton's record carries two dates, August 2020 online and the January 2021 issue; Cite a source built the entry with 2021, which our list uses. The retraction is real: Science retracted the LaCour and Green (2014) paper in 2015 (McNutt, 2015); see retracted papers in your reference list.
How do you flow a debate?
Flowing is note-taking in columns, one per speech, with each answer written beside the argument it answers. The Middle School Public Debate Program (2012) calls the page a flow sheet, because arguments "flow" across it and show what was answered and what was not; the judge keeps one too.
- Set out the columns before the round, one per speech, in speaking order.
- Write the argument, not the sentence, with abbreviations and symbols.
- Note the author and year of every card, so you can ask for it and check it.
- Draw an arrow from each answer to the argument it answers.
- Use two colours, one per side, as the NSDA's Public Forum guide advises.
- Mark anything dropped, on both sides, before you stand up.
- Build your rebuttal from the flow, in the order the judge wrote it down.

What are the most common rebuttal mistakes?
Each of these is warned against in a source we read.
- Contradiction without clash. The NSDA guide says clash must engage the other side's link and impact, not just set "they say x" against "we say y".
- No "therefore". Without the comparison, the judge has two arguments and no reason to prefer yours.
- Answering only the weak parts. The WUDC manual has judges ask whether a team met the stronger parts of a case or merely the weaker ones.
- Sneering. World Schools judges mark down inaccurate, uncharitable rhetoric, such as claiming the other side gave no reasons when it did.
- New arguments in a reply. World Schools reply speakers may add a new example but not a new argument.
